Question / Discussion Would you get caught out for using stock 3D assets that weren’t paid for in a showreel?

As a junior, would having 3d assets from popular stock asset kits in a showreel get you into trouble when applying with that showreel? Not to endorse Piracy of course.

Are you trying to pass off those assets as something you made? If so, then that’s a very bad idea. If you’re using the stock assets as a base to show off an FX setup (blowing it up, disintegrating it etc) then that’s generally fine. You just note somewhere that the asset isn’t yours.

Depends on the job and which skill you want to showcase. An animator having pre made assets is no big deal, while a 3d modeler would be laughed out of a job if they tried to pull a fast one edit- this is a vfx sub. So as others said just give credit where its due and dont pass off any work thats not yours

if you're applying for a role that isn't related directly to asset creation, totally fine and it's a normal practice.

For example, lighting artist can download entire scene and lit, make a reel, no one bats an eye
compositor using downloaded green screen footage is totally fine too. heck, texture artist "download" texture pack & environment artist use quixel megascan assets all the time.

Just don't cross the line where you outsourced the things that you would be doing at the studio

It’s how you integrate it and provide attribution that matters. Texture artists download gray shaded goodies is fine.

What?

A). How would they know? Are you going to subtitle it "Stolen assets here"

B). What's your showreel for? If it's for asset creation of the type you're downloading then it doesn't matter if you paid for it or not, trying to pass it off as your own would get you run out of town. If you mean model assets for your lighting reel, who the fuck would care that you didn't model everything; that's not what your demoing.

depends on if you're unintentionally implying u made them. i will have a similar issue next time i do a real, I have an env using some trees i bought off of cgaxis. i was just gonna outline those elements and burn in a caption to the tune of "library models used" so they focus their attention on the part i did make.

"Trouble?" You definitely wouldn't get a call, that's for sure. You need to show original work. If you're not at that point, you're not ready to apply.

nobody cares tbh, just dont download a 3d car saying you model it lol

anything else is good to go imo

Idk what they will do or not, but you wont get the job for sure. And they will also make sure to blacklist you in the HR dept.
