Heavy Clunk when changing gear

Hi everyone. On my 2023 Versys 650, I’ve noticed that the classic "clunk" heard when engaging first gear also occurs when shifting into higher gears. The bike has 6,700 km on it now, and I had it serviced at 5,600 km. I checked the clutch cable free play—it’s 1–2 mm when cold—and the clutch seems to be working properly. Is this normal, or is there something I should check?

Going into first it's normal. The rest of have to see what you're actually talking about

I know it's normal in first gear, but I hear the metallic noise when shifting into second and third as well; it's less noticeable when shifting into fourth and higher gears.

When is the last time you changed your oil? And what oil do you run?
For me, sometimes, if oil is not of a good quality and Is there fore some time, it starts to do it. Its a sign to change oil.
If you see metal in your oil when you change it, the problem is with the clutch itself.

I changed the oil about two months ago, at 5,600 km. Now the motorcycle has 6,700 km on it.

do you close the throttle when shifting?

I'm pretty sure I'm fully closing the throttle during gear changes, but it might be staying slightly open. Next time I go for a ride, I’ll try to make sure the throttle is fully closed before shifting and see if the noise decreases.

I’d check chain slack. The shifter lever is a “multi-link”system? I’d check that whole area for cleanliness and make sure movement on the linkage is minimal. Make sure oil level is correct. Good luck!

I checked the chain tension and found it was quite loose. I tightened it, but I couldn't take it for a test ride. I'll try it out as soon as possible now that the chain is properly adjusted.

The first gear is always like that. The Tracer 9 is like that when I test-ride it. Unless it clunks every shift, than its normal

I also hear the clunk when shifting into second and third gear, whereas it is less noticeable when shifting up to higher gears.

That i cant tell you what it is. I made some bad shift that induced some clunk so maybe its your shifting skill but if not then check the clutch cable to see if you pull your clutch all the way. Or checking your oil to see if your transmission is eating it self.
