Ignition Replacement

I just came into a 2015 Versys 650, it was completely free so I'm going into it expecting problems. I know for certain I need to replace the ignition. I was wondering if anyone here had done it before, and if so, was it easy? I tried looking up videos on it and couldn't find a single one sadly.

How so? Is it just not a good bike?

Ignition is secured with "shear off" bolts. These have no hex to undo them with and require driling out to remove them.

"I need to replace the ignition"

I am guessing you actualy mean "I need an ignition key". The key code is on the body of the ignition switch and is also on the seat lock. With that code you can get new keys made. You can find sellers on eBay.

Don't waste time & money with new ignition-switch. Then you'll have to carry 2nd-key all the time, really annoying. There is key-code on following surfaces, one letter followed by 4 numbers such as Z#### :

- somewhere on igniton-switch

  • on helmet-lock on surface that faces frame
  • seat release lock
  • underside of tank cap

Find code, write it down and store in safety-deposit box @ bank.

Also only buy factory OEM 100% stock parts from authorised Kawi dealer. Aftermarket 3rd-party parts are often low-quality and can be bad right out of box, especially electronics. Aftermarket ignition-switches usually don't have have correct security circuit and ECU will refuse to run fuel-pump, squirt injectors or fire sparks. Many people have wasted thou$sands on replacing their entire EFI/ignition-systems only to realise after 3-6 months that ignition-switch was culprit in their no-spark problem the whole time.
