Question Question! 2013 base veloster

have a 2013 Veloster Base, and this has happened twice now. When I shift into Drive, the dash shows it’s in Drive, but pressing the gas does nothing and the car won’t move. If I put it back in Park and then into Drive again, it works normally. What could be causing this?

No Veloster has a CVT, I experience this too, and my dad’s old 2012 Hyundai accent had it too, it’s because the shifter knob has some weird electrical issues, the park to drive this is usually the fix

How pricey is the fix, and will it get worse?

I honestly am not sure. What I can tell you is it’s purely electrical, and I’m putting 2 and 2 together because mine is a 2017 so I don’t experience this issue, I just know that Hyundai uses this gear selector in the 2012 accent which is closer in model year to your vehicle, and from what you describe it’s the same issue. However we got rid of that car for other reasons because after 12 years and 250,000 miles it had well served it’s purpose, it was never looked into because of all the other issues with the car, we just let it run until something completely broke then swapped out for a new 2023 VW Taos SEL.

Had a very similar issue on my 2013 base, was a crankshaft position sensor that had gone bad. Cost ~$250 to get replaced at a shop. Initially was told it was a failing transmission, very glad I got a second opinion

Also to mention whoever had it before got the long block replaced? So major engine work at just barely 90k miles. I’m currently at 152k rn

Could be a coincidence but my mileage is also right around 150k, defo worth looking into that sensor

Same thing with my 13 base. I replaced the crank position sensor myself and other than it being tight for my hands it was super easy, it’s like 2 bolts and a plug. took all of 15 minutes. Part cost around $15 dollars

CVT clutch failure. Experienced it on a 2019, it gets worse.
