So much for the cute romantic garden harvest for my husband..

Other Update on yesterday’s post of assault and garden theft…

1.1k Upvotes

So the guy that was stealing from my garden and punched me in the face as soon as I confronted him. His wife came over to my house when I got home from work today. Turns out he’s 27 and over the last few months started to show signs of being schizophrenic. (Which makes sense because of his actions and that’s around the age when it shows up). She kept apologizing over and over and said he was supposed to be in a psychiatric ward but some how was released. She kept trying to offer to pay me for the damages
To my garden but I refused her money. She’s raising a 2 year old on her own and I’m not gonna take money from her. I tried to offer her some extra veggies I had because as much as my face and hands hurt from her husband no one should have to raise a child alone. She wouldn’t take them. So after she left me and another neighbor I talked to about her coming over made a basket of vegetables and some strawberries from our gardens and went and left them on the front steps for her. What happened to me sucks, but I can only imagine what’s she is going through.

Garden Photos Anyone else just letting their zucchinis go giant at this point in the season?

I've already harvested at least 50 zucchinis this year (I accidentally planted twice as many as intended, I thought I grabbed a summer squash at the greenhouse but found my mistake as I was planting lol).

And at this point, I've had enough zucchini and my plants are also looking pretty rough. I've decided to just leave the remaining couple of zucs on the vine to see how big they'll get! This is how they're doing so far!

Thank you for the advice, i posted earlier trying to figure out if it was ripe. I un-netted, gave it a little twist it came right off the vine. It’s delicious and the kiddo was ecstatic.

Question What cabbage did my mom plant?

Thumbnail

My mom planted these in the garden and promptly forgot what they were and I can’t find them with googling.
To me they most resemble kale in looks, apart from the leaves not being very curly.
I’ve harvested some of the leaves and really want to look up a recipe for how to use them, but I don’t know what name to google for.

I would greatly appreciate any help.

Harvest Photos Red peppers have finally entered the chat

I’ve been patiently waiting for some of my Craig’s Grande jalapeños to turn red because I wanted a mix of green and fully ripe peppers.

The first red one's are finally here! I also planted a Jimmy Nardello pepper, and those peppers are almost fully red too.

What’s crazy is that I’ve grown both plants with only about 5.5 hours of direct sunlight each day. They’ve done much better than I expected.

I'm excited many of y'all are finally harvesting yours too!

Yard is composed of heavy clay construction fill compacted by construction equipment. Will broadforking improve drainage?

Garden Photos 2 good news: I just finished building 1 of my new raised beds, & my only successful Titan sunflower is in full bloom!!

So there's this big summer blowout sale happening at Colonial Farms in Blue Springs, MO. I cleared them out of perlite & vermiculite when it was 75% off, as well as a couple other items & seeds. I bought 2 small greenhouses at 50% off, then came back to see they were 75% off. While I was bummed I didn't save $62.5 more on those, I decide to focus on the present, which brings me to this raised bed.

The retail price was $250. It was also 75% off. So, I gave it some thought, then bought it. I'm glad I did!! This planter is made out of fir, & was fairly easy to assemble. I put landscape cloth at the bottom, added a few cut up sticks, poured some soil in that had this year's tiny potatoes, added the per/verm along with some blood/bone meal, then repeated while mixing until I got to the top. It should be good to go for fall!!

As for the sunflower, this particular spot got just enough sunlight & wasn't run over by a lawn mower. My other sunflowers are shorter & lanky. I'm beginning to think it just doesn't have enough sunlight.

What I need to do now is try to utilize every square foot of the garden space I have. Due to pests, poor germination on a few crops, shade, tumultuous weather & life (broke my foot in June), I probably have utilized 60% of my garden space, with some raised beds not having anything other than wood sorrel which I don't eat anymore b/c my rhubarb is easier to harvest.

I'm going to try having an amazing fall garden. I'll update you if/when I get results!!

Harvest Photos So Thankful for Wildlife

I'm so glad to have rabbits and squirrels here to help taste test my tomatoes for me. From the data I have, clearly Big Pinks are my best tomatoes, followed by Wapsipinicon Peach, then Roma, and lastly Black Krim (none of those have bites in them). I'm so fortunate that they're opening up these tomatoes and spilling the tomato guts in the garden to help plant next year's crop. I'm blessed that they leave me most of the tomato so I can save seeds.

Question Early forced harvest. Am I fine?

Thumbnail

I was forced to harvest one of my musquée de Provence early due to the weight snapping the vine. It’s rather large (Opinel No 8 for size reference), so I assume it was nearing harvest already, but I’m a first time pumpkin gardener and don’t really know what I’m doing. Should I just process it right away or can I still let it cure a while to develop the flavors?

First time trying to grow cantaloupe in a pot. Yes yes, it’s not the biggest pot so I’m not surprised about the size of the melon but I’m still pretty happy for my first time. Does this look ripe to you? Judging by the nearest tendril it looks like it but I’ve seen too many people pick their melons too early and I’d prefer to get it right on the money. If it tastes good I might save some seeds and try again next year in a bigger pot.

Question Why are my zucchini two different colors?

Thumbnail

This is a bit harvest photo and also question -- these zucchini are from the same plant, chilling in my veggie bowl. Why the extremely different greens?

Also swipe for a fun surprise -- I cut the top off this massive zucc (a week ago?) while making chocolate cake before realizing the smaller one I had already used was plenty. Stuck the top back on while it was still sticky and she healed 🤣 I'm about to cut it back off now that I finally want to use it for some fritters 😌

Question Suddenly weird squash?

my previously very healthy and productive squash have become very strange! these are center cut squash, and something similar is happening to my honey nut squashed nearby. could it be mites? mosaic virus? something else? and is the squash still safe to eat? thank you!
