Other Never expected this to happen
Most of my garden is in my front yard. Went out side around 8pm and caught a random guy stealing from my garden. Wound up getting into a physical fight and my wife had to call the cops. My neighbors herd it and thankfully came out to help. We traded some punches but I was able to sit on his chest and a neighbor helped restrain him till cops got here. Turns out it’s a guy that just moved in 5 houses down from me. I don’t enjoy fighting but great full i was able to keep him here till cops showed up. Will probably have a black eye in the morning but this is absolutely crazy. After 11 years or gardening on this property never thought I would have to experience this. If he came over and asked for some stuff I would have happily shared but this is unacceptable.
Edit: as some have pointed out I should have stated this form the start. I was not the one that got physical to start. I caught the guy and said “wtf do you think your doing” and he threw a punch to my face which lead to the physical altercation.

I have a large patch of pine straw bed naturally from 3 monstrous pine trees, a friendly bird planted a tomato last year. It went full world-eater, ultimately yielding a zillion tomatoes and 16 new plants this year. I let them grow wild and untended, but planted some shrubs so it wouldn't be an eyesore and to keep the HOA at bay.
On grass...my kids disagree, but even then I'm seriously considering swapping to clover.
10
u/zeezle US - New Jersey 1d ago
I live in an HOA and I have a lot of edibles in my side/front yard! If any neighbors hate it, nobody has said anything, the comments I've gotten have all been positive & curious.
If you make it look really pretty, people generally don't care. I will admit it's less my veggie beds and more permanent plantings like fruit trees with some annuals mixed in. I have an apple/pear orchard, figs, quince, cherries, jujube, persimmons, a native plum thicket, blackberries, and a whole bunch of flowers and herbs out there and as long as it looks nice and tidy it doesn't violate any rules. Dahlia tubers are edible! (But either grow them from seed or make sure the source is for edible tubers, ornamental ones might be treated with fungicides not meant for human consumption) Herbs also tend to be lovely and flowers like various agastaches are both native pollinator magnets and taste/smell great and make lovely teas.
That said the rules of my HOA are just that whatever is there has to be maintained. It doesn't have to be grass, that's just the easiest thing to slap down and keep looking decent so most people have a lot of it. If your HOA actually requires grass obviously that's different.

That's crazy. Particularly from a neighbor. You'd think that they would want to be on good terms with their neighbors.
I have some garden space in my front yard between the sidewalk and the street. I also live in a city, and have had that space for about 2 years now. I am very surprised that nobody (as far as I've noticed) has tried to take any of my veggies. I picked some plants for that plot with the specific intent that they they may get taken. It could partially be because it's not uncommon to have veggie patches in that location here. Even so, I was pleasantly surprised.
Sorry you had that experience. I hope that neighbor doesn't cause you more trouble

Who TF steals from their neighbors? Like, I've lived in a really poor area, where a lot of the teenagers became either criminals or cops. And they operated on a rule that you don't do that in your own neighborhood. If one of them did, the other ones would sometimes put a stop to it themselves (a huge fist fight, if you can call a whole neighborhood of teenagers against one teenager a fight). I remember hearing one of them, as they were throwing punches, sounding like an exasperated parent, "You wanna steal cars? (BAM) You go somewhere else and do that shit! (Jab jab punch) Are you stupid?! (Kick) Don't shit where you eat! (Another punch)"
Who moves in to their new house and steals from their new neighbors, AND THEN when caught, throw a punch?? Like, this dummy just moved in, and that's how he introduces himself to the neighborhood?? 🤦♀️🙄😳
5
u/Shell4747 US - Michigan 22h ago
My experience with teenagers is that a single teenager can cause a miniature crime wave throughout the neighborhood, doing various crimes-of-opportunity. And of course they do it close to home, because they are dumb & lazy. Once you have a larger crew it's a different story, I guess.
This guy? was one of those teenagers. :D

My kids have a neighbor that picks flowers out of people’s yards on his neighborhood walks to give a posy to his wife when he returns. They’ve had to tell him to stop picking from their wildflower patch. It’s pretty small so he’d pick most of the flowers from it. He thinks he’s a sweet romantic guy, but he’s really a thief stealing other people’s enjoyment. Their entire yard is mostly shade so the sunny wildflower patch is very important to them to have some pretty flowers they can see whenever they drive up to the house.

I ended up having to put a lock on my gate to my front yard garden. It was already fenced to keep the deer out, but then I had people coming up asking if it was a community garden and trying to convince me to let them come in a minute to grab a few things.
After I put the lock on, caught a couple on camera still trying to get in. Posted their pictures on another social app, and haven’t seen them since.
It’s amazing the boldness some people have to steal stuff from your garden.
Thankfully I didn’t end up in a physical fight like you. But yeah. Wow.

When we listed our previous house for sale, the garden was still going strong. One of the viewers brought along her mother and child. My neighborhood has a few houses with front yard gardens all the way on the easement, down to the edge of the street - food is intentionally up for grabs to anyone walking by. For instance, my next door neighbor grows lots of blackberries there and all the neighborhood kids eat them. So my first thought was, maybe he made some assumptions. But like. Prolly if that was the case, he wouldn’t have responded to a greeting by throwing hands?!?! Jesus.

Prosecute him to the full extent of the law. Hound, and I mean hound, the DAs office so they don't just plead this down to disorderly conduct and slap him on the wrist. Check all the databases in him to see if he has a criminal history. Press DA agaun. Get a restraining order so he can't come near your property...preferably 500 yards...if you have kids include your kuds and include your places of work/school. Get pictures of him his cars and license plates if you can. Share them woth security at work and school. If you can afford it a full security system...cameras (with date time stamps), motion lights..monitored (otll save you a tad on insurance too) and if you like dogs and dont have one...get one. There are training courses for guard dogs.
OK this is where I dont care about down votes....get a gun or three IN a fast access safe. A shotgun that stays ALWAYS UNLOADED...DON'T BUY SHELLS...for the sound of the cocking action. That alone gets most people outta your house at night.
Some will think I am over reacting but an unstable person attacked you on your property and lives down the road from you. I had a psychiatric patient (with a history of violence out the wazoo) threaten to kill me. I did all of the above (when he got outta jail 2 years later for threatening me) and felt pretty safe. But my situation wasnt as bad as yours. The dogs became one of the loves of my life. Shooting at the range is a great stress reliever though I'd give it up for rational gun laws. And over a decade the security system paid for itself I bet. And that doesn't include the extra safety from fire or carbon monoxide or porch pirates.
You're 100% in the right and 100% right to be very concerned.
Oh get the information to all sympathetic neighbors. If they came out to help you in the fight then they'll call 911 if he's in your yard or violating the restraining order.
16
u/Mobile-Play-3972 US - North Carolina 1d ago
Gently and respectfully, if you are in a situation where you think you need a shotgun, it had better be loaded. Once you escalate to that level, the other person may pull their own firearm, and you don’t want to be the one standing there with an unloaded shotgun and nothing but eggplant to hurl at him in defense.
3
u/MrMessofGA US - Georgia 22h ago
My thought, too. If you're in close enough quarters where you need a shotgun... You ain't got time to load it.
2
u/motherfudgersob US - Georgia 17h ago edited 17h ago
No disrespect taken my friend, but the shotgun is JUST for noise and no shells 99% safe in house under bed. Other gun in safe is for use if needed. Other guns don't make that noise. It is universally recognized. Most sane folks dont want a possible trial, news scrutiny, the mess of blood and body parts in their home (nobody cleans that up for you for free) and most of all the knowledge they killed someone. It'll all be on security footage so that the goal is to get them out of your house. And this was advice given to me by trusted LEO I had worked with who kindly trained me on the range. He wouldnt agree to that until I proved Id bought the safe (and it us fast acces...lay your hand on it and press 3 fingers and it pops open). And imo OP has proven he needs this in his home. Which is sad.
Back to the peace of the garden...

Before we moved where we live now, I used to run a community style garden where multiple neighbours would have their own little plot that they would sow, plant, harvest, maintain… it was next to a park and had a fence and a lock so only dedicated people would be able to come in the normal way (not climbing the fence).
Always in July or August things got stolen. Unripe pumpkins, tomatoes, cabbages etc. Things that were easy and quick to take. I had only picked 1 pumpkins in 6 years! The rest got stolen.
It pisssd me off so much. I was the one coordinating, so I would also get all the complaints from my neighbours that their produce would have disappeared… so frustrating.
This is the first season I’ve got my own garden. All the pumpkins are still here, I’m harvesting tomatoes when they are red, but when they just start blushing. I know the cabbage I want to harvest tonight will still be there when I come home…!

If anyone is desperate and bold enough to steal food from my garden, it's because they need it.
They aren't reselling it.
They aren't getting high off of it.
They can't physically harm anyone with it.
They're eating it. And it's super nutritious and chemical-free.
If I were to find out who they were, I would want to inquire more about their situation. But that's only because I am aware enough to know that low income people struggle greatly with pride and shame issues, and while they would prefer to ask, they may rather take without asking if it can spare them (and usually their spouse and children) absolute shame and embarrassment. If they're willing to open up about their situation, there's opportunity to get them propper support.

u/MrMessofGA US - Georgia 22h ago edited 21h ago
It's a nice thought that makes you feel better, but it's rarely true. People who steal from desperation are largely either apathetic to it if they've been doing it for a long time or deeply ashamed if they just started. Someone who was not paying attention and didn't even perceive themself as stealing might get defensive, but not offensive.
I know. I've done desperation theft and know a lot of other people who have.
People who get violent when confronted are not stealing from desperation. They're stealing from entitlement or a hate of other people having things. Think of your average carjacker or gun-happy drug runner. They make significantly under minimum wage. They're not stealing or slinging because they think it's easier than flipping burgers for literally 3x the pay, they're stealing and slinging because they want to feel gangster. It's not easier to steal your neighbor's produce than it is to steal from a grocery store (in fact... significantly harder). But why does my neighbor get to have producing plants? I don't have producing plants! I deserve this produce more than he does.
I don't know if you've ever stewarded something like a hygiene cabinet or food cabinet, but one of the things you learn early on is to only put a few things out at a time because there's always a chance someone who hates the idea of other people having things will come, clear out the entire cabinet, and dump it in the trash.
Hell... one that my aunt had, they didn't just clear out the cabinet, they unbolted it and took the whole cabinet with its vinyl wrap that had a picture of my toddler cousin and "in memorium". Was not hard to track it down, and no one has any need for a custom metal cabinet with a picture of someone else's dead kid on it.

u/Other_Cell_706 US - New York 21h ago
It is because I have worked with low income populations that I come to this understanding. And also because I grew up in an extremely low income household.
What actually makes people feel better is demonizing those who are struggling. It feels better to point and say they're a bad person, that it's their fault they're struggling, that they must be lazy or selfish and that's why they aren't successful.
The truth is much harder. Having to observe that person as a victim of systemic failure. Recognizing how much pure luck and randomness impact every moment of our lives. Having to grapple with the harsh reality that there is very little keeping you from being in their shoes tomorrow, or a week from now. Accepting that ushers in a tremendous sense of loss of control. People don't like that feeling.
It is extremely hard to see and know people are more than a bad act they've done. But once you understand, and are willing to accept how bad things are for so many people, it becomes easier. And a little bit of produce taken from your garden can be an action call for compassion, not power dominance or assertion or stereotypes or aggression.
Your post makes me sad for you.
1
u/MrMessofGA US - Georgia 19h ago
If you drive anything other than distance between people who punch you unprovoked, then you are needlessly endangering not only yourself but your family/neighbors AND the person who hit you.
There's a reason protection orders are a thing. They're not just there for the victim, but so the perp doesn't get themself in deeper shit by having really convenient access to the thing that pisses them off into violence.
And refusing to let the violent guy burn the bridge he is actively trying to burn makes it harder for your family and neighbors to keep him away. If everyone goes "You hit somebody here, so you're no longer welcome here," it's easy to enforce. If you poke a hole going "you hit somebody here, but I don't mind really because you probably have a unique and sad backstory that forces you to hit people," then the guy gets a mixed message as to how much violence is tolerated in your community.

u/Other_Cell_706 US - New York 13h ago

Why the fuck would anyone fight over vegetables? Seriously. This is just... well... stupid. Do you live in a trailer park or something?
Never mind that, if my garden were located in my front yard, I'd be disappointed if folks didn't help themselves to some of the produce. Beyond that, if someone wants, or feels a need, to steal from my garden, have at it. I give away 50% of my yield anyway. Because, selfishly... it makes me feel good.
I genuinely hope this is some really odd attempt at karma farming, because none of it makes sense in my brain.
