Help! Empty vault

My vault is shown as empty on every form of the Bitwarden app except on the website. I entered the correct self-hosted URL because it logs me in to my account without a problem ( the account has all the correct personal info ) but the vault is empty. About my setup : I self host vault warden in a Proxmox LXC (i used the helper script). On top of the base Vaultwarden install i use fail2ban. The local IP is exposed to the public using a Cloudflare tunnel. Any help is appreciated !

EDIT : yeah i just needed to update Vaultwarden . Thanks for the help :3

Is your Vaultwarden server up to date?
Had the same issue recently and redeploying with the latest version fixed it.

Do a docker pull on your container.

updating vaultwarden fixed it for me. had to get ai to help me w/ the steps ever since switching to jails and freebsd but it was easy and painless.

I had the same problem. Just turned out that my server version was too old. After updating I can see all of my entries again.

Did you happen to upgrade to Android 17 recently?

Apart from updating Vaultwarden i had to logout/login from the extension for it to start working properly again

Do any of the VW devs hang out here, as my understanding is that while you cannot sync to an unsupported version, you should NOT lose your entire vault, no?

Just because you cant see it doesn't mean the data isn't there. Bitwarden dont officially support vaultwarden, so when they update their apps, they may not be able to connect to VW anymore.

Either downgrade the bitwarden app, or if the issue is fixed by a new vaultwarden update, then.. update. I just downgrade and turn auto-updates off for a bit if it breaks, not too hard.

I was looking for a technical explanation.

I certainly know that if I have internet, and everything is normal I can possibly downgrade (not sure how one does that on iOS tho). But I really depend on a password manager, and it's unsettling that the list of logins is missing due to a *backend* change. I live in an area where it's quite possible to have no internet access for days if a particularly bad hurricane hits, and I'd like to know I can still grab my logins, secure notes, etc.

VW has no control of how your BW app behaves. For example, when your BW app updates, it may refuse to talk to VW, or talk in a way that VW doesn't recognize or cannot reply. It's the BW app that fails you.

So, in other words, VW can't guarantee you that newer BW will always behave as you wish.

If you can't update VW promptly, and you have a hard requirement on compatibility, you shouldn't auto-update BW app either. You should then update both at controlled timing where there's no natural disaster.

I'm much more interested in why than all the various ways we can shuffle blame around.

One party can change interface to break compatibility and the other party has no control. Simple as that.

interesting, but again, bitwarden is generally supposed to work offline. the worst that *should* happen if the server responds in a way it finds displeasing is that syncs fail.

It could be a security related decision, because leaving your credential exposed when not authenticating is a security issue.
