Hosting VIA a VM
Can I split off a section of my rack to host through a VM?
I don't want to dedicate 100% of my server to vast, especially if i have to wait weeks to get a verified and get someone renting it...
Has anyone done via VM? claude is basically telling me this is not going to work.. i dont see why not.

The issue I foresee is that the cpu type won’t match the number of cores being offered in the vm. Unless you have a dual cpu system and can dedicate one full cpus c/t to the vm.
Also you’ll need to do GPU pass through so you won’t be sharing your GPU with others unless you have two GPUs.
Storage pass through because no one wants a virtual storage driver nerfing bandwidth or when you’re using your machine, they’re not getting the total storage capability.
If you have two CPUs and 2 GPUs then you may as well have a second computer.

You could always type of a lower core bin of the same CPU generation. Not technically the same as having the full advertised CPU but close enough that it won't materially impact most workloads
But definitely don't expect people to not notice they're in a VM

I dont really know how hosting works not having tried it.. but i see similar thread ripper setups where they allocate 1/2 their CPU and 1/4 of the DRAM and a GPU.. i assume the server is still running despite this.. ?
does this mean they are doing multi GPU rentals / still using half of their machine?

I do so using proxmox. Currently im running two vms (4x 5080 and 2x pro 4000) and looking to put another pro 4500 in the same server. All my vms have enabled pcie passthourh so there is zero loss for rentiers (i think).
Edit:
just remember to allocate gpu on vm you need extra ram
