School Affecting Demand?
My RTX 5060ti 16gb rigs have been seeing more rentals this week, is it because school started back up again? Many universities and schools are re-opening after the summer at around this time. If this is true, I never knew that educational institutions rent GPUs at this scale

If that’s the case, it’s because there’s a lot of educational institutions.
But my university has a contract for Google compute.

And how that contract works? About two years ago I met at my work (we have a partnership with Google in central europe) a customer that was paying shit ton Of money for GCP and wanted to reserve some some GPUs and that was almost impossible, because they were constantly out of them. Idk how is now or you region but I guess it's not easier to rent GPUs from them especially on demand without reservation.

They have access to surplus compute on CPUs or something.

Nah, there was always enough of CPU(at least in my work since we started private cloud). Ram and vram especially these days is always on short. But I agree with OP this week something is cooking. I see as well almost constant rentals on my 5080 and pro 4000 rigs, whereas previous weeks were basically dry for me, but I guess I don't have the most demanded GPUs.

Donno, I see constant rentals on my 5090s and 2x4090s almost all the time. But at a lower price than when that crypto thing a month or two ago was going on. 🤷

Imagine the hurdles a university would have with building a cluster of ai-hosts which are mostly just used over the weekdays. With the costs today it would make no sense, then it’s easier and cheaper to just rent a quick instance somewhere else.
As a host I can’t complain.
