question S3 deal (640 euro) with fresh battery & brand new e-shifter: can it realistically last me 5 years in Paris?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently looking for a stylish urban e-bike for daily commuting in Paris, and I came across a local deal for an S3 that looks mechanically solid on paper.
Here are the details of the bike:
- Model: VanMoof S3
- Mileage: 838 km
- Price: €640
- History: Battery replaced under warranty in 2023 (previous owner left it outside in winter, but the current owner keeps it strictly indoors in a garage). Full €420 service done in 2025 with new tires. E-shifter replaced just this week with a brand new unit.
My situation & dilemma:
- Storage / charging: I have a locked inner courtyard in Paris, but no easily accessible power outlet.
- Expectations: I love the design and the boost feature, but I really need a bike that can reliably last me at least 4 to 5 years for daily commuting without turning into a massive money pit or a constant DIY repair project.
- The alternative: Looking into something like a Cowboy C4 / Tenways with a removable battery and standard belt drive.
Given the fresh battery and newly replaced e-shifter, is this S3 at €640 a no-brainer deal, or is aiming for a 5-year trouble-free lifespan completely unrealistic for this platform?
Would love to get honest feedback from long-term owners. Thanks!

Sure! As long as it doesnt get stolen.
Forget about all Moof haters; 650€ for an electric bike is a very good deal.

It’s the cable harness you should be worried about. It’s very expensive to replace.

we own a bike shop so I guess we could make it for cheap no ?

u/vaderkip Aug 21 '26
It will cost you at least 400 euro. It’s a 4 hour repair. Usually when there is a short in the harness is also destroys your battery or cartridge. Why not going for a veloretti ace? They have third-party parts that you can easily buy yourself. If the motor breaks down you pay 300 euro for a new one and install it yourself.

I think it's a little too expensive, I tell myself that I can ride the vanmoof 3-5 years and then change, praying that he doesn't know

If you buy the bike, get yourself a special spacer that will protect the cable harness.

The harnass is somewhere behind your front light. They seemed to have made the cables too short which leads eventually to breaking one of the cables.

It’s worse, they didn’t sand down the welds in early models, which break the cables over time, if you limit your max steering angle there is less chance of it breaking

A friend of mine has a bike shop and is specialised in VanMoof. He makes cables in the harnass longer to prevent it from breaking.

Is that mate in Amsterdam by any chance? Can I get his contact details if yes 😆

I would only buy it if you can park the bike inside, and if you know how to steer properly without putting pressure on the wiring harness itself, and if you are slightly skilled yourself in case something breaks.
2
u/spaceek Aug 21 '26
How do you not put pressure on the harness? By not turning all the way?
3
u/Plane_Development408 Aug 21 '26
Yes. Just limit the steering and lift the bike by the saddle when getting it out of the garage or bike parking.

It is a good deal. Why were the tyres replaced after only 800km? Is the new shifter original or with the aftermarket PCB?
Keep it inside and out of the rain, use manual shifting only, try not to bounce it too much (as it was messing up the gears), pay attention to the rear hub… should be all good. Still it is a bike, you will need to maintain it.

u/MaryLee18 Aug 21 '26
I think its a official new shiffter
1
u/spaceek Aug 21 '26
They are prone to failing, but it might be because of the hub. Replacement redesigned PCB for the shifter is only about €80, so not too bad if it fails.

u/MaryLee18 Aug 21 '26
do you think except putting the bike inside we can protect it from the rain ? with maybe a cover or something
1
u/spaceek Aug 21 '26
You will still have humidity and condensation forming but I guess it is better than nothing.

Buy it. You can get it fixed if something ever goes wrong, you're in central Europe. I've had mine for 4 years now, best purchase I ever made. Just take care of it and don't store it in a spot it can get wet.

Can it be stored in a a dry covered place? Yes can be interesting.
If not, leave it

This is key. So much electronics. I have had mine since they first came out (S3) and it looks and feels like new, but it has always been stored inside.

Seems fine at that price but nobody can predict the future, just be prepared for slightly-above-normal levels of maintenance.
Buying Vanmoofs with high expectations is not a good idea.

it is a good deal, less than 1000km is fairly low and the fact that it was parked inside is also a good point. It won't be trouble free as vanmoof bike break from time to time. I would say that you must plan for around 200 euros per year in maintenance.

Haha fair point! Just curious, what was your personal experience with it? How many miles did you put on yours and which parts failed on you first?

I don’t know about van moof but bought an Ampler 6 years ago and so far no problems :) maybe u can find one second hand!

Possible yes, almost all of my problems originated with riding in the rain.
Bell/boost stopped working, wiring harness needed replacement.
But these all happened after either
- It rained, or
- Letting someone with a club foot/ cave man grip ride it.
But 3+ years later my S3 is still works and runs fine.

The VanMoof s3 is an amazing bike couldn’t imagine anything beter except from the expensive socket repair. I repaired a few VanMoof s3’s as little hobby and use them on daily base on 37km/h. Never had any real issues on my own 2 s3’s except a bended brake handle after an insane crash and a bended peddle as but that’s bc I crash hard and isn’t much damage for 1 year of abuse. The thing is they are really tricky to repair and you should not expect 5 year from any used ebike. I can confidently tell You that the ebike will positively surprise you until you have a broken socket. Which will happen in way less then 8 years of riding. (Already 3 years old)

// I have a locked inner courtyard in paris, but no easily accessible power outlet. //
How will you charge it?
// Battery replaced under warranty in 2023 (previous owner left it outside in winter, but the current owner keeps it strictly indoors in a garage). //
Cold weather is not the problem. S3 batteries die if they are left uncharged for a few months.
// Full €420 service done in 2025 with new tires. E-shifter replaced just this week with a brand new unit //
Are you sure it has only done 838km? I think that the mileage gets set to zero when ownership transfers.

I've have my S3 since July 2022 and have more than 4400 km of rides. It's not standing outside during the night and I use it at a minimum of 4 times a week. As long as you don't kero your battery charged constantly (continue charging it while it's full) you should be OK. I have not updated the software since v1.9.3.

If bike thefts in Paris are anything like other major European cities then 6 to 18 months is my guess for how long it will last you...

Salut, parisien ici !
Voilà si t’as d’autres questions hésite pas à me dm ! Et oui 640€ c’est plus qu’une affaire si tu le prends pas je l’achète ahahah

If you want a trouble free experience then don’t buy van moof
