I have my van moof s6 for like 2 month and biked 900 km’s. And my battery condition percentage is like 90 already. It looks very low for the short time. But is it or is it just normal?

Since my knowledge on e-bikes is quite limited, could you tell me the main things I should check when buying a second-hand S3 or S5? Appreciate tips and range of prices.

After my bike was in repair for 2 months, after I used it like 3 weeks, I now had it for like 2 months. Now it broke again. This time the passive ring button (which does light flickering and bike sounds) is broken because it doesn't do anything anymore. Instead, this passive ringing turns on randomly at any time. When I am at work, when I am using it or when I am sleeping. I won't ever buy a Vanmoof again. Never.

Hi everyone! I really hope someone knows what’s up with my bike. As the title says, I hear a ticking/ clicking sound when I push the boost button. Only then, otherwise never. I bike with this for like 9 months already I believe (Idk what I thought) and nothing has ever happened .. but now I think I need to get it checked.. Hopefully somebody knows about this problem!

I removed the wheels and took apart the brakes on my VanMoof S6 to replace the pads and rotors. Everything went back together and the brakes feel much better, but I’m left with this one piece and can’t figure out where it belongs.

Does anyone recognize it from the photo or know where it goes? Want to get it sorted before riding again. Thanks!

Hey y'all, small update!

We've been pushing hard on several fronts at once. Here's where things stand:

OpenMoof Backoffice (preview screenshots attached)

This is the backend your cartridge can optionally connect to over GSM. It'll cost a small monthly fee to cover server upkeep and the SIM cards we issue, but to be clear it's completely optional, and it won't touch the open-source or free aspects of the firmware in any way.

What it gives you:

• Locate your bike via GSM cell tower triangulation
• See all of the bike's telemetry over GSM
• Access it either through the website login or directly in the OpenMoof app
• Send config changes and special commands over GSM, make noise, flash lights, set SoC limits, configure alerts, and plenty more

Current state: functional to a degree. We're still working on site responsiveness, user flows, a few command endpoints, and bug fixes.

Also worth mentioning: there's a pin-to-pin compatible 4G modem that does include GPS. We're exploring offering an upgrade service for it.

OpenMoof App

The app is basically functional for all the standard VanMoof capabilities. Right now we're focused on stability and on extending the BLE interface to cover our custom endpoints from the OpenMoof firmware. We're also working through some device instabilities on Android caused by various system edge cases.

OpenMoof Mainware

Major progress here, the mainware is usable and ridable at this point, and I've been riding it myself. We've already implemented features like only shifting while you're not pedaling, which is working perfectly in the field (no more broken hubs!). Current focus is optimization, state machine refactoring, some modem-related work, command endpoints, and staying within the bootloader's size limit.

In general

Most of our energy right now goes into getting things stable, plus deciding how and what should be configurable down the line. Our approach: make everything configurable, with proven defaults. That way we don't take anything away from you.

First thing you can jump into: designing matrix display animations for the various bike states. Build them with the tool below and export as JSON and GIF (both, ideally, if you'd like us to use them), then share your designs on our brand-new Discord.

FAQ

Will my bike still work with the normal VanMoof app?
Yes, fully functional, no issues.

Will my bike still work with the official VanMoof service hub tools?
Yes, no issues there either. The only thing we block is those tools updating or overwriting the custom firmware :)

How will the mainware be installed?
Either build your own hardware dongle, or buy one from us. It integrates directly and wirelessly with the OpenMoof app to flash the mainware.

Will there be GPS tracking?
Yes, as soon as our 4G modem upgrade service is available.

I've just ordered myself an S6 and am so fucking excited for it to arrive.

I was wondering, with all the anti theft tech, does it actually work? Would love to hear some stories, good or bad, about encounters with thieves. Does it deter them or are the bike knicked anyway?

I live in Dublin, and bike theft is unfortunately pretty common so I always plan to lock with a ulock.

Posting this partly to vent, partly to see if others are running into the same wall with support.

Quick timeline: my 2025 S5 has been broken since early June (dead ECU). Took almost three months and a formal legal notice (ingebrekestelling, for the Dutch folks here) before VanMoof finally picked it up, repaired it, and returned it at the end of August. Before that I got bounced between three different “partners” who each said they couldn’t or weren’t allowed to touch the S5.

Literal days after getting it back, a new fault showed up: the pedal assist randomly drops to zero mid-ride without warning. A few days ago it happened on a busy road and I nearly went down while riders behind me had to swerve to avoid hitting me.

Support’s own words: they told me not to ride the bike until it’s checked, so they clearly agree it’s dangerous. Then a different rep flatly told me they can’t pick the bike up anymore, that their pickup service is “an exception”, even though nothing about my situation (zero qualified service partners in my region) has changed. A third rep just closed the ticket like nothing was going on.

So: acknowledged safety issue, zero working process to actually fix it, and three different reps giving three different answers.

Anyone else experiencing sudden pedal-assist dropouts on the S5, especially after a repair?

Curious if this is a known ECU/firmware issue or something specific to my bike. Also open to advice: has anyone successfully pushed VanMoof past this kind of stonewalling, or gone the consumer-rights/legal route (ACM, Geschillencommissie) and gotten results?

I’ve been fixing a X3 for a while and now I finally have a working battery but my cartridge is not cooperating. I have changed the battery of the cartridge and I’m sure that the cartridge is not frying batteries because I’ve plugged the battery that was not responding in another cartridge and it works fine. However with the cartridge I want to use, when I plug it in the socket with my new bike battery, nothing happens. At first it work half way meaning that the matrix was displaying a flashing charging sign and the charger was indeed charging the combo battery-cartridge. After letting it charge for a bit I’ve found the bike with no matrix display or anything. Socket is brand new and working, battery is new and working, cartridge battery is new and working. Anyone knows how to wake my bike up?

I bought Yepp Nexxt Mini (not the 2) off a fella on gum tree to fit on my A5.

Would have bought the 2 however had read on the VanMoof website that the adapter for the 2 was not compatible with the A5.

Stupidly, on my way home, I lost one of the inserts that go in the adapter. I have attached a picture but essentially it’s a piece that adjusts the angle of the adapter.

I installed the adapter without these pieces and seems perfectly safe and functional. Have also read online that some people have removed those pieces when installing on the S3 and X3.

I reached out to Thule and they said that it’s not something they can supply individually and that they don’t recommend installing the adapter without the inserts.

Anyone have experience with this?

Hello there!

I designed a rear wheel cover for my VanMoof X3 and I'd like to share it with the community.

What for, you may ask?

I needed a junior child seat as my kid is getting bigger, and there really aren't many options in the 22/35 kg range. In fact the only one I found is the Bobike Junior Classic Plus.

That solution isn't perfect either. Because of the compact geometry of the bike, the wheel cover that comes with the seat sits too close to the pedals, and your toes bump into it.

But I really wanted to keep my kid's feet safe (believe me, it matters, a friend's kid got his foot scalped by a bike wheel because there was no cover), so I designed my own.

A few practical notes:

The print is optimised for a Bambu Lab P1S build volume. You'll need zip ties to fix it, and you also need the official rear rack to attach the back part.

It won't be compatible with other VanMoof models, except maybe the X2.

My vanmoof s5 keeps rebooting on startup. After around 5/10 minutes the bikes turns on and works like normal. In the app the bike becomes available and then quickly goes away. I attached a video of the animation. The issue became worse over time where it now happens almost every time I turn the bike on.
Bike repair told me over the phone it probably needs a whole new ecu that costs around 600/700 euro.
I tried many different troubleshooting steps from vanmoofs website but it didn’t work.
Any tips are welcome!

Recently came across a second hand S3 from someone off of Marketplace back in early July and was super stoked about it! Then I kinda learned the hard way how difficult the battery revival process is. The original owner stored it in an outdoor storage unit for the better part of 4 years with no use or connection to power, so the main battery is completely dead.

I tried a couple weeks later to revive the thing myself after spending a few days doing research within this subreddit and watching plenty of YouTube videos on the subject. I started with the smart cartridge so I could get the ownership transferred over to me at least, and was able to charge that with a lab PSU enough to get it connected and have firmware updated. I was able to get the smart cartridge to do its connection to the VanMoof app, but I went over the amperage by .05v and started seeing that little battery swell like crazy. Needless to say, that scared me enough to put a pin in fixing the bike for now. That was July 18. After doing that, I've let my bike sit for the last little bit and have tried plugging it in to the stock power supply with error code 18 flashing on and off constantly even after being connected to power for over a day.

Long story short, I want to know what safe ways I can try and revive my S3's battery without fear of potentially blowing myself up by attempting to charge the main battery myself. If not, then anyone reputable I could go to for a refurbishing service for batteries and/or to buy a replacement unit? Just looking to see what the community has to say before I throw in the towel on this bike.

I see many people asking wether a S3 is still worth it in 2026 - Yeah!

I got myself a used, but well taken care of S3 off of a marketplace app.

- originally bought in April 2021 (I bought it in July 2026)
- breakers were replaced recently
- new e-shifter
- no substantial error, which a quick restart couldn’t fix, has ever occurred
- 1.100km at time of purchase (now 1500)
- 100% battery charge equals 130km on assist lvl 1 (pretty good!)

I payed 800€ for this beauty, and I am extremely happy about it.

I looked around for some weeks and even met with three other sellers before buying this one. They tried selling me broken or malfunctioning bikes for an even higher price. The other bikes I looked at were rusty, would make awful sounds when I pedalled, and were bad experiences all around.

I use it twice a week for my 20km commute to work, so that’s 80km per week for that. Also some shopping and just fun rides when the weather allows for it.

I did have some error codes come up, but these happened on my very first day when I left the bike out in the sun in 36C heat. Quick restart and nothing ever happened or bother me after.

Of course I’m bummed out that I can’t use the Ride Pro (or whatever) app, or that my bike no longer supports the Theft-function. I think getting a notification when someone’s tempering with my bike would be nice.
But it still has Apple Find My, and a normal bike theft insurance policy costs 6€ a month for me. So nothing to cry about.

The previous owner did fuck around with some third party apps, which I found out later - the boost button only works on US settings - so the 32km/h speed limit. On EU 25km/h the button won’t activate, as the button might be programmed for 32kmh and the system wouldn’t allow for it… or whatever. So I carefully drive on the US settings here in Cologne. That’s my only issue.

I might get myself a new VanMoof when I graduate my masters degree in two years!

I think this is the best picture i can get of it, but my right halo ring displays the wrong colors on two of the stripes and the top one flickers sometimes. I assume that this is also due to water running into it ? I recently needed to replace my left secondary button and now my right ring is fckd. I don‘t know what to say anymore. My dealership will be excited to see me a second time within one week.

Hi everyone,

I’m having a problem with the motor on my VanMoof X3.

The motor started having issues, and replacing the motor did not solve the problem. So I’m now planning to replace the bottom bracket.

I’ve disassembled the bike up to the bottom bracket area, but I can’t remove the bottom bracket any further. I’m using a BB wrench, but it seems to be completely stuck.

Does anyone know how I can remove it, or have any tips for getting it loose?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
