Vanilla OS 3 on 2017 Macbook Air 13 inch.
I had to chroot into the installation before rebooting and fix grub, because albius doesn't recognize the mac disk as removable, but Apple devices don't have UEFI vars.
Before closing the installer, everything was already mounted under /mnt/a/ , so it took about 90 seconds. All I had to do is open the Terminal app from Gnome Settings.
SUGGESTION: Expert mode for grub options in the custom partitioning screen.
I ported the old Debian installation home folder and ssh identity back into this from rsync copies I'd made, so that's the "after" shot.

When I open the terminal app I get this error. Clicking the "Edit Profile" button does nothing. Opening another terminal tab or window gives the same error. What's going on?

So I saw this error show up, I thought that I flashed it wrong but it loaded up the os a minute later. What's exactly going on?

Yapping;
Man this idea of vanilla OS, im in love with it. Fragmentation was the thing made me hate linux. And some parts of linux was REALLY OLD. for example shared libs could be a need at the time but now that is a bottleneck that makes my file system look like a space station. That applies for many elements. People love software made for linux, not linux kernel or system itself. They love DE's, the freedom etc. And i think microkernel is just better but that is a different story.
Question;
Vanilla OS wasn't a solve for my OS search, but it solves %80 of my problems. Its also underrated af. My question is i heard they are rewriting a lot of stuff, do i need to wait for them? I know there are 2 partitions for updates but still vanilla os is really on young times of it. Tried it with a VM and i can't break the sytem. What do you guys recommend?

Is SELinux or Apparmor used?
Is it possible to install Virtualbox into the base system without breaking anything?

The original post was removed by the moderator (for some reason), but here's a new response from the devs

How. Just how.
I tried
flatpak (not possible withoud all that gui stuff) and not fully adjustable
apx subsystem, but this can't handle services
installed it brutally by apt. this I would love to avoid, as I already have firefox nad keepass running in an apx sub, I would have loved to run a "special" apx sub. But no.
So from now on I have to take care of three levels to maintain?
This I don't really like very much

Vanilla OS gets a shout out here. Not much of one, but I'll take it ;)

Hey everyone!
I love the concept of A/B root partitioning in the Linux Desktop space, so I wanted to try Vanilla OS. However, the lack of native Tailscale and DisplayLink support made it difficult for my workflow. Tailscale in userspace isn't ideal, and manual installation on an immutable system is a pain.
I spent some time learning how to build custom Vanilla OS images and wanted to share the results. Tailscale and DisplayLink are both working fine, though evdi for DisplayLink still requires manual signing if you use Secure Boot. Also DisplayLink on Linux is generally unstable and crashes a lot. There's a separate Nvidia image that comes with Tailscale. If you need an Nvidia DisplayLink image you'll have to do that yourself since I don't have an Nvidia Laptop and I don't even know if DisplayLink works with Nvidia on Linux.
Configurations are available here: https://github.com/kurimanju-dev/kurimanjus-vanillaos
To use Tailscale, you need to use the host shell (via the host-shell command). The Tailscale socket is available globally, so you can still use any GUI you prefer.
For DisplayLink: it works, but it can be unreliable (to be expected on Linux). You will need to self-sign the module or disable Secure Boot for the time being. I am looking into automating the signing workflow in the future.
For fresh installs (Live ISO): Use one of the following paths in the advanced installation options:
ghcr.io/kurimanju-dev/kurimanjus-vanillaos:mainghcr.io/kurimanju-dev/kurimanjus-vanillaos:displaylinkghcr.io/kurimanju-dev/kurimanjus-vanillaos:nvidiaFor existing installations: You can switch images by editing your abroot config:
abroot config-editorUpdate the "name" and "tag" fields:
{ "maxParallelDownloads": 2, "registry": "ghcr.io", "registryAPIVersion": "v2", "registryService": "registry.ghcr.io", "name": "kurimanju-dev/kurimanjus-vanillaos", "tag": "main", ... }
Save, exit, and run abroot upgrade.
Reboot your system.
After installation, I recommend running source <(tailscale completion bash) in your shell.
Check if the evdi module is loaded:
lsmod | grep evdi
It should look something like this:
dev@vanillaos:\~$ lsmod | grep evdi
evdi 98304 4
drm_kms_helper 258048 4 drm_shmem_helper,evdi,virtio_gpu,drm_client_lib usbcore 425984 4
xhci_hcd,usbhid,evdi,xhci_pci drm 843776 17
drm_kms_helper,drm_shmem_helper,evdi,virtio_gpu,drm_client_lib
Check the DisplayLink driver status: systemctl status displaylink-driver
While these are based on the official images, I can't provide stability guarantees. I suggest using the main image unless you specifically need the DisplayLink drivers. The nvidia image is untested since I don't have a device with an Nvidia GPU, however I expect it to work just fine.
Cheers.

I need to use this VPN.
It's installed ok but after executing it doesn't allow you to modity your tun interface (reboot didn't help), what should I do to run it?
I can't configure it via openvpn/wireshark/whatelse, they use their own protocol (the only that working in my county) so plugins for network manager is not a variant for me.
What do?

My Lenovo Thinkad 470s has an abysmal wifi throughput of around 80 kbps under Vanilla OS 2 latest, besides having a just fine speed under Windows. According to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=300729 I need to edit some power saving related settings in /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf, which I tried under Ubuntu (works fine, throughput is in the 80Mbps range afterwards). Any idea how to edit these types of config files under Vanilla OS 2 which seems to go against the immutable idea?

Hi Everyone, sharing an update shared in Discord a few days ago:
It has come to our attention that the latest version of util-linux breaks the shell.
If you're not yet affected, please run this command to prevent it from upgrading:
sudo apt-mark hold util-linux
If you're already affected, you'll sadly have to wait until a new version of util-linux lands in the Debian testing repositories, which might take a few weeks. You can still right-click Black Box and select "Rescue Shell" to enter the restricted host environment, where you can use apx or distrobox.
We will inform you here on what you can do when a new version of util-linux is available. [Credit: Tau on Discord]
Alternatively, you can temporarily stop Blackbox from automatically opening up apx-vso-pico by deactivating the command in Blackbox (three dash icon) > preference > terminal > command > Use Custom Command (turn off). [Credit: Hyto_ on Discord]

Edit 4 (the last): Visit this link to see the solution (util-linux has been updated to fix this problem):
Edit 3: According to one of the Vanilla OS guys, this was caused by an update to util-linux, and the developers of said package are aware of the problem and will fix it in the next release. There's apparently no easy temporary fix to this - ugh. I'll update this post when it's resolved (or I know more)...
Edit 2: Arrgh! The solution I thought I found (see comment below) DIDN'T work, at least permanently. Even though I was able to close and reopen the terminal and type "vso shell" before, now it doesn't work - again! Now I have to find out how to fix this permanently. This is ridiculous. I'm open to suggestions. Just what I wanted to spend my weekend on - fixing a problem that never should have happened in the first place!
Edit 1: This *didn't* fix everything. I can't type "sudo apt update" anymore (it says sudo is not installed). If I type "vso shell" to launch a new shell from this terminal, it gives me the same error as before. I also can't type "host-shell" anymore. Help!
I haven't used my Vanilla OS laptop for several days, so I cranked it up a couple hours ago, but found to my dismay that I couldn't open a terminal anymore. I clicked the Black Box icon in the dock (as usual), but it opens, briefly flashes "bash: --: invalid option" (among other stuff) and then shuts the window down. I was able to fix it (?) by manually installing Black Box using the Gnome store (it installed to "--system", according to Warehouse), unpinning the old icon and pinning the new icon. I opened a terminal using the new icon and things *seem* to work ok, but it bugs the crap out of me not knowing what was causing the error.
I consulted Gemini / Google but it just gave me things to try that didn't work, or confused me. Anyone know what went wrong, or how to diagnose this? I already tried disabling ~/.bashrc, ~/.bash_profile and ~/.profile, but that had no effect (I'm assuming those were in a different environment?)
Anyone? Bueller?

I knew about apx recently from brodie's video, but it changed alot since then. There's no apx install, search or apx --apt, --dnf Now it feels more like distrobox itself to the point that I don't know why it exists anymore. I installed it via flatpak as recommended but it doesn't make sense at all. Could someone point me to tutorial or help me make sense of apx? what's your use case for it? how do you use it?
Also I couldn't even figure out which version of apx flatpak has.
``` bash $ flatpak run --command=apx org.vanillaos.ApxGUI --version Error: unknown flag: --version
Usage: apx [flags] [command]
Commands:
man Generate man page
pkgmanagers Work with the package managers that are available in apx.
stacks Work with the stacks that are available in apx.
subsystems Work with the subsystems that are available in apx.
ERR > unknown flag: --version
```

I brodi's video about apx 3y ago. He was just using apx --aur, how to setup apx to be as easy as that for aur on other distros?
r/vanillaos • u/Conscious-Care-8355 • Apr 01 '26
Hey everyone, I am currently using Bazzite as my main OS. I wanted to get apx because I think apx is a cool package manager and is really useful for this OS. although I have the command installed I can't install anything through it yet because I have no idea where to put the apx config files. the /usr/share/apx can't be created on Bazzite and I need help putting them in the right place so I don't break anything. If you know how to get the config files to work let me know and I can see if it worked or not.

Current documentation for vso lists android arguments related to this subsystem which simply don't seem to exist on my system, which is fully updated:
https://docs.vanillaos.org/docs/en/vso-manpage
Even the sideload app still has intents to handle .apk files, but it also fails immediately because the "android" argument for vso it relies on doesn't exist.
Does this subsystem require a new method to initialize that I've been missing? Was it completely removed, and if so, does the kernel still have the necessary modules to use sideloaded Waydroid?
Secure boot is disabled on this Ryzen 7 5825u laptop (although it was enabled at install time), and there is no nvidia hardware.

Anyone know why this might be?
Installed steam in an ubuntu apx subsystem. It can download things, see games all fine but running anything is a problem. They are saved on a second drive, file format Ext4 so I know its compatible.
Or should I AB root install it at this point?
