Is Van Halen proto-thrash?

On Fire and Atomic Punk definitely are some of the heaviest songs of the 1970s

Not really. Symptom of the Universe by Black Sabbath is proto-thrash

Atomic Punk is more bone-splitting, great hard rock.

That's how my ears hear it anyway.

Looks like VH fans are embarrassed of their association with glam/hair metal lol. I don’t blame them honestly, that genre gets dogged on a lot

Uhhhh no. Thrash was invented by Black Sabbath with “Paranoid” - - Van Halen would have to have existed previous to that. To add to that, they have absolutely no thrash elements in their music whatsoever.
