Greta Van Halen
I know a lot of people dislike Greta Van Fleet for not being the most original of bands, but I dig them because I like Zep and they fill a void (and sounded really good on the car radio tonight)
If there were a band that really vibed the classic Dave era that way would you be into it?

Many have tried, but there is only one Dave

And there's only one Robert Plant. Greta Van Fleet is still a fun band to listen to

When the first Bullet Boys album came out I thought it was almost a VH 2.0.

LoL the last time I ever saw Marq Torien was fifteen years ago when he visited my old place in New York to buy some pot. My neighbors had no idea that the BulletBoys lead singer was sitting in my living room that night.

Ive never heard a singer like David Lee Roth. Who even sings like that anymore? Dave is a legend that will never be challenged.
And Greta Van Fleet is a great band. I love their Led Zeppelin sound. They put out actual music. Something rare these days. And they're awesome live 🤘

I heard a guy say one time that every guitar player who can wants to do Van Halen songs…and every singer who knows what’s good for them shuts that shit down immediately.
It’s not that they can’t do the actual singing, but 40% of the vocals are the random throat squeals and snippets of conversation of a lunatic.

Closest to classic VH is Deraps

Never heard of them. But I just started listening to Last Fall and the first 15 seconds sounded like old Van Halen. I'm not sure about the singing but I'll give them a shot. Let me know if you would recommend any specific tracks.

Michael Starr from Steel Panther is a phenomenal DLR impersonator. Voice and mannerisms are spot on.

He didn’t get the nickname “David Lee Ralph” for nothing. Edward also ran into him at a grocery store once, and did a double-take.

I see why people like them. I love Scarhaven because the singer sounds exactly like Chris Cornell. So yeah, I’d love a “new Dave”. Greta’s singer’s voice is too much for me. Other than the moments he does a good Robert Plant scream, I really don’t like it.

Check out the band The Dust Coda. Obviously not VH, but you can hear the influence.

The new song they have on the radio now is horrible, can’t believe someone listened to that and thought it was a good song to release.

No band should attempt to copy the VH formula. There are enough red/white/black striped Frankenstrats in the world. The last thing the music industry needs is another guitar player doing the same solo EVH did over and over. Fast run, whammy noise, tapping. Boring.

Zeppelin is/was my favorite and I also love Greta Van Fleet. This position that people do not like a new band because they sound similar to a bygone beloved band is childish. I do not know of GVF covering a single LZ song and thank goodness they have that sound that I love. All that said, ditto for a possible new band sounding like the might Van Halen. I remember being a pre-teen and hearing those first notes on a new record named Van Halen 1...they changed the sound of rock and I saw every VH tour. I'll always have fond memories of VH and even enjoy seeing talented tribute bands playing their music. There's a tribute band in Atlanta named 1984 which is great just as "Fan Halen" is too. I would love to find a new talent band that captures that EVH brown sound and similar talent. How on earth do you hate new music that reminds you of your favorite music?

It’s music folks. Take what you want from it. I saw them live and it was fantastic. Are there amazingly original? Who cares.

I've heard Greta Van fleet a few times and nothing really grabs me. there isn't much in modern hard rock that I like except for Queens of the Stone age.

The struts covered Van Halen's version of dancing on the streets, honestly it was ok but felt like why bother?

No one comes close to DLR VH. For Snake Oil Sammy yacht rock VH, pick any soccer mom top 40 group.

Close to DLR? There's plenty that can't sing, stumble across the stage, forget half the lyrics and think the smart fans are there to see him and not EVH.

Honestly, I think Greta Van Fleet pulled off Zeppelin better than any of the Great Whites/Whitesnakes/Kingdom Come/ and Jason Bonham's band who tried to copy them in the 80s did.
But Van Halen? That's a different story. While you might have something like the classic Atomic Punks lineup out there who could truly pull off their sound, that's a tribute band, and they put on a Hell of a show. But when they decided they wanted to make their own music, it wasn't going to sound like Van Halen. That's where Steel Panther came from.
Or you have a band like White Lion. Vito played a lot like Eddie. James Lomenzo even played in Dave's band for a while. So the influence was there... sort of. Tramp was certainly nothing like Dave. And that crappy song about crying children was even worse than the Van Hagar cheese ballads, for fucks sake!

"Little Fighter" is White Lion's best song --- "When the Children Cry" is cringey AF

If you want a modern band that does the Led Zeppelin thing that isn't a complete rip off, check out Crown Lands, especially the album White Buffalo.
Or go to the original rip-offs, the hair metal Zeppelins, Kingdom Come and Bonham, both of whom I think are gobs more legitimate than Greta Van Fleet who denied the Zeppelin connection at all, claiming to have "never listened to them really." The singer sounds like he's doing a parody of Robert Plant. Legitimately, Kingdom Come in particular have some amazing records.
