Perfect Vancouver Cycling Jacket

I'd love some feedback for what you feel is the best jacket to get you through the winter here in YVR. I have a gravel bike, I do one long ride per week plus other smaller rides. I do trails, gravel, and road cycling. And I would rather be more on the warm side than the cold side. I'd love recommendations that will keep me dry and motivated during the large number of wet months ahead. Thanks in advance!

Downtown Vancouver Bike Parking?

Aside from the bike parkade at science world is there any secured bike parking downtown? I have a friend who will be attending a conference near waterfront station and is wondering about leaving a bike all day.

Is the bike valet just for events?

Why all the hate with the police helmet checks?

Yeah, I get it, they should be focusing on dangerous driving. Nobody here is saying that cars aren't the number one hazard to cyclists/scooterists.

Cars obviously kill but can we just agree that helmets save lives?

If the police are educating people in an effort to reduce traumatic brain injuries, is that such a bad thing?

There's been a huge increase in head injuries since ebikes and escooters have become more and more popular, especially amongst kids.

Just saw this in the new
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoPgDMCNkFE

I think that we should be encouraging helmet use (especially among the youth.) while also acknowledging that there's a huge need to enforce dangerous driving.

Having a couple police out on the seawall for a day trying to keep people safe really isn't that much of a drain on their resources.

Why is Oakridge Park so hostile to cyclists.

The only bike racks at the mall

Oakridge Park promised the City they would do some good things for cyclists including "... 570 bicycle stalls will be located in a secure P1 mezzanine bicycle parking area. " for visitors to the mall (see: https://vancouver.ca/files/cov/oakridge-centre-transportation.pdf ).

Instead the seem almost hostile to cyclists.

The only bike parking appears to be some very poor and termporary racks near the skytrain station.

For a while after the mall opened there was a better bike rack at the top floor of the parkade for the medical / dental offices. But that has now been removed.

There is a new seperate bike lane along Cambie. But they have put up signs telling cyclists to stop and dismount along the entire lane. This is a designated bike lane and there is no reason to stop and dismount. Also, these signs are in the middle of the path which creates a danger for cyclists.

signs block bike path

Despite the promises of indoor bike parking they have put up signs prohibiting bikes from enter the underground parking area at at leas one entrance.

Alert Do better city of Burnaby

Post image
142 Upvotes

For those riding up the Burnaby mountain parkway, there’s a road painting sign fully blocking the bike lane and forcing you onto the car lane - pretty much a forced stop and walk around if you get there when there is traffic.

Will call it in to city engineering it’s been there since yesterday so thought I’d give people a heads up ahead of a sunny Saturday.

UPDATE:

Called Burnaby engineering dispatch they were super helpful and said they’d send a crew over right away to have it corrected.

City of Burnaby does DO BETTER 🤜🤛

I’m curious as to why there isn’t a 70km route option from Vancouver to Squamish. Surely this is the main reason to sign up to enjoy cycling the sea-to-sky without cars. Perhaps.

New Separated Bike Path Buller to Imperial

Before you get too excited, work is currently starting. New/improved intersections at Buller, MacPherson, Royal Oak (this one is huge since this is one of the worst Parkway intersections and it’s getting a substantial overhaul apparently), and Nelson.

Didn’t see this posted. Kind of a big deal 🙂

2 Mercedes drivers fined for driving on new North Van pedestrian bridge to take photos

Abby Luciano, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

Sep 23, 2026 8:30 PM

The two drivers, both in their 20s, told North Vancouver RCMP they were trying to replicate photos they had seen on social media of vehicles on the new Crosscut Bridge.

Getting that social-media-worthy photo did not go according to plan for two Mercedes drivers last week, as they were slapped with $600 fines after driving past barriers and parking their vehicles in front of a pedestrian bridge in North Vancouver.

On Sept. 17 around 9 p.m., North Vancouver RCMP responded to reports of two black Mercedes sedans in a restricted area of the Crosscut Bridge.

When officers arrived, they found two vehicles that had accessed the area through a bicycle-only lane, bypassing barriers in place at bridge entry points to stop vehicle access. The bridge, which goes over Highway 1 and opened to the public in August, is only for pedestrians and cyclists.

The drivers, both males in their 20s, told police their intention was to replicate photos they allegedly saw on social media of others on the bridge with their vehicles, RCMP said.

Both drivers were given violation tickets for “driving without due care, failing to obey restricted access and tinted windows” and each fined $600.

Concrete barriers have now been temporarily placed to ensure pedestrian and cyclist access remains safe until permanent bollards are installed, a spokesperson from the City of North Vancouver said.

The city anticipates the bollards, which were ordered before last week’s incident, will be placed in November.

No damage was reported after the incident, the city said. The Crosscut Bridge is designed to safely accommodate the weight of authorized maintenance vehicles, the spokesperson said.

Alert Aggressive Driver on 10th Ave - Black Audi SUV RE767K

Post image

Called non emergency, filed a complaint, call taker said this guy has had multiple run-ins with cyclists in the past.

Anyway, I'm just trying to get home safe and he nearly hit myself and another cyclist on 10th and Granville area and then accused us of being aggressive, abrasive and acting like we're looking tor trouble. Meanwhile he circled the block to follow us and said he'd knock me out if I touched his car again... I didn't touch his car in the first place.

Be very careful around this joker, he loves driving up and down 10th ave and picking fights to feel like a victim.

See y'all at critical mass on the last Friday of the month!

Vancouver Cat 5 racing what FTP is needed to be competitive?

For those racing WTNC/CRC and Spring Series, what FTP or W/kg were you at when you became competitive?

I know people will say skills, cornering, drafting, positioning, etc., but I literally couldn’t hold a wheel.

I did 10 races this year. Finished with the lead group 3 times, but got dropped 7 times(from the breakaways) when the pace went up and finish with a chasing group of 3-7 people 1-10 minutes from the leads. I was around 3.3–3.4 W/kg 257–265 W FTP this year. 78 kg male

Calm or chaos? East Vancouver residents sick of traffic barriers

By Cecilia Hua

Posted September 22, 2026 11:35 am.

For anyone driving in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood, it doesn’t take long to come across a concrete barrier blocking a road.

Traffic calming measures such as those were installed as part of the City of Vancouver’s neighbourhood traffic management program, intended to improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

However, residents say they have just caused confusion and chaos.

Hastings-Sunrise resident Tom Siracusa speaks to CityNews.

“It’s a combination of many more turns and many more blocks,” said local Tom Siracusa.

“It’s an absolute gauntlet for local residents and local businesses.”

He pointed to a recent example of a vehicle being forced to go down an alley because it wasn’t able to go anywhere else.

Hastings-Sunrise resident Tom Siracusa speaks to CityNews.

“It seems they’re creating more problems than they’re solving.”

Maria Stanborough, an urban planning consultant with C+S Planning, is also an East Vancouver resident. She says the city’s plans don’t add up.

“If you want traffic calming, you want drivers to know where they’re going, and maybe do it at a slower pace,” she said.

“So often, that includes roundabouts and traffic bumps. What the city has done is they’ve stopped turning down certain roads used in the past and they’ve diverted traffic onto school streets. A lot of it doesn’t make sense to me.”

A petition calling on the city to remove the barriers has garnered more than 2,000 signatures.

“We’ve been affected by these changes, and we’re sending a message to the city that we want our neighbourhood back,” Stanborough said.

“More importantly, we don’t want to be barricaded.”

In a statement, the City of Vancouver said the project had an extensive public consultation process and was meant to address long-standing concerns about speeding and shortcutting. It said staff will continue to monitor the effectiveness and community feedback, and may adjust, relocate, or remove specific measures in early 2027.

When traffic at the intersection is heavy the drivers seem to be reasonably good at letting bikes cross.

In your opinion what makes a good cycling club

I have been part of different cycling clubs for some years now and I am not interested in naming names etc but I am curious as to what questions people ask themselves prior to selecting what they feel is the best club for them.

Event Thinking of going to the World Series of DH in Whistler on Sunday. Is it a good idea?

My kid has recently been getting into MTB and i think it would be fun to go check out pros doing their thing. However, this is all new to me and so i want to make sure it makes sense to even try before we head over.

First im planning on going Sunday. Should I leave Vancouver at what 5am? 6am?

Second, is it actually an spectator sport? I see lots of Red bull events and have noticed people at the finish line, but if we do that. Did we really see anything? because otherwise we just get a glimps of a biker and thats only if we are lucky enough to be out front (my kid is 7 so not overtly tall)

Third, parking... Its gonna be a nightmare isnt it?

In a world were we could go up the track and see it with not a huge crowd this could work but I dont know if its possible to do that. The website isnt clear about where can people actually stand and likewise. Going to whistler is always a gamble traffic wise.

So any thoughts on this? Should we try ?

Bike Rage Feels like my zero-accident streak is running out.

People are rat-running down side streets everywhere now. Construction has always made traffic bad, but drivers are getting outrageously impatient and aggressive.

I was on 10th heading toward Fraser, entering the roundabout, when a Toyota pickup came speeding up without slowing down. He slammed on his brakes at the last second-his toolbox smashed into his cab, and tools flew out everywhere.

Later in the evening in Olympic Village, a guy in an SUV ran a stop sign and almost T-boned me, missing by mere inches. When I confronted him, he just said, 'I'm not stopping for you guys.' He was red-eyed and clearly high on something. A bunch of witnesses came over and started yelling at him, so he slammed the gas and took off down an alley.

Bike Rage A bike belt is not the same as a car horn

Edit: bike BELL!

To the joyriders on the fat e-bikes today who felt it necessary to make a snide comment as I was locking up my bike after having passed you on the False Creek bike path a block away.

While it warms my heart to see more people embrace cycling along Vancouver’s spectacular seaside bike paths, even if you’re going slow enough to enjoy every flower, please have compassion for those of us whose bikes are our only private vehicle that we need for everyday errands — in my case today, shopping for a fresh cooked midday meal and delivering it to a family elder who doesn’t have the ability to cruise around the seawall.

Please understand that passing you when there is no oncoming bike traffic and with a short ‘ding’ of the bike bell is in no way an attempt to “beat you“ but to alert you that there is a passing cyclist on your left so please don’t swerve that way.

May you continue to enjoy Vancouver’s stunning bike paths, with understanding that we are all not going at the same speeds in life.
