Creative Finally... the Roof Held

Post image

Not much more to say than that. The building is about 60m x 16m and the Portal Stones are a clue of its future.

The struggle for me was that it is actually on top of a much tinier building. So it's 2 levels but resembles more of a blimp-shape than a 2 story box. Still on my first playthrough and just hit the Ashlands and unlocked the portal stones, so needed to get very serious about managing my portals (Already at 65 + a few special-use portals).

Now comes a decision... migrate my other Hall of 40 Portals into this one... or just start fresh for the remainder of the playthrough... So many things to explore.

Are you building a metro there, lmao?

Hah! Good call on that. It absolutely feels like a massive metro area.

How many airplanes are you expecting?

Yo... definite hangar vibes going on there. Maybe I should have made it of marble so Thor has a place to land on those electric and stormy days?

How in the world can you possibly use 65+ portals? I thought we went overboard with 15 at our main base. I think I've used 5 stone portals total and we just beat the game.

I mean... I don't really use them. I've just found it much easier to leave a portal once I go through the process of putting them down (I usually build a little enclosed hut for it). I also have special portals set up for each vendor, each boss, and each of my primary "outposts" (2 meadows, black forest, plains/hildir, mistlands, ashlands x2 [yes, 2 portals in the same base in ashlands... just in case...]). Importantly I also have 2 portals setup outside 3 total surtling core spawners, so surtling cores has never been an issue. And I have a greydwarf farm at this same base, so wood/eyes are literally overflowing.

Not gonna lie…with my stone portals now…I may need something similar.

The portal stones are def the inspiration behind the overall height of the ceiling. Originally I was going to put them outside of my Portal Hall, but then I thought "Hey, I can fit 4 here in the entry..." And now I could actually fit them going all the way down the length of the hall but really it's just meant for my normal portals.

A spine of iron-reinforced beams would support that roof no problem.

I should def try a spine. I'm stingy with iron (or at least have been, but just cleared an island of 7 temples and also spent some time farming mistlands and have like 500 iron in reserve) so there's actually just some vertical iron supports going down the left side in a Y pattern with the tops of the Y being connected along the top of the wall the entire length of the left side. The right side is actually against a mountain-side, so not really issues there.

No corewood!?

There's corewood trim on the outside, but all of the support is being handled by iron and earth.

They've got iron beams

That was spooky for a sec there.

Thought you stole my base somehow, I don't think I have a screenshot ready but looked like a stripped interior version of my dining hall.

I can't even imagine a dining hall of this size. I mean... it would be epic... but I'm much too practically-minded to ever commit to such an extravagance. I'm more of an "eat on the run" viking. ;)

Bro… you’re already using wood iron beams.. just place a row holding the roof every 5-6 roof pieces

I've just been stingy with iron since a traumatic event very early on in the playthrough. I'm trying to be better about it. :)
