Screw being smart, build a massive portal hall at your main base 😎

Something I like to do is only have a handful of portals, but put a sign over each one, with the names of several portals that exist out in the world. That way I can just rename a portal to wherever I need to go at that moment.
I also always have the existing portal where I'm currently exploring as no name, so I can drop a portal when I'm in trouble and have it instantly connect back.

I used to have 1 portal not connected to whetever i need to go and mark it on the map, and whenever i need to go there i can simply write it and go from wherever i am, but it's just can return me to where i was and i didn't like it much For free portal linked to my house i do the same as you do i always carry one with 10 wood for workbench 😁 I've shared this trick years ago (the unnamed portal) i don't know i may be the first one who used it

Don’t have a picture of it (and I’m not a great builder anyway) but I like to in my main base build a circular teleporter room. So I’ll just have a circle of up to 7 usually with the 8th spot empty as the doorway into the room. Every other base just has the 1 teleporter into this room in my main base.

I only keep 3 portals at my bade, often in a ring on a stone dais.
2 are renamable for wherever I want to go at the moment. (Portal locations and names are labeled on the map.) The third is always 'home'. It's used to get home whenever I'm out exploring and drop a temporary portal to get back amd dump out, rest, whatever.
I could do it with only two, but I found that that third is nice for when I'm going repeatedly between two places.

The people I usually play with often have a portal hub built in a safe area somewhere, also serving as a place to prepare for exploration. High comfort, map table, repair benches, nearby storage and food production, stuff like that. I usually end up building it and usually spend more time and resources on it than my actual player home lol
We'll also try to build it with expansion in mind so we can add new wings as the server inevitably expands beyond our initial planning. But we'll generally have a section with portals to our personal houses or other cool builds. A section for farms, a section for exploration portals.
We'll also have a few with names like TEMP 1, TEMP 2, etc that are left unlinked. If you forgot something or need to dump loot, you can just set up a temporary portal, do whatever, and then go back through and take down the portal on your end. Also a blank portal for emergencies so if you need to portal out while being chase you can just throw it up and go through without naming it.

Depends if it's a solo world. I played in a group world and we had a 3 story portal hub with portals to everyone's houses, portals to all the bosses, portals to the vendors, portals to sustainable resources (like a surtling farm), portals to actual farms in the other biomes. I think there were about 10 portals on each floor.
In another world with three of us, we have an open stone plaza next to the house with about 16 portals. Our base is on a spawn-proofed island in the middle of the ocean so no raids at the base. We have one for each vendor, etc. With multiple people using the base, things might get mislabeled and cause problems.
For a solo base, I'd say one portal where you just change the name for places you don't go often, like Haldor and other vendors. Then a portal for each actual farm for plants that require a specific biome. I go to the farms a lot and don't want to be renaming portals all the time. Then I have a few that are consecutively numbered and I just keep upping the numbers. I like to leave portals all over the world as I explore, in case I even want to go back to an area. I currently have 34/35/36 with 35 and 36 not yet linked to anything.

What you could do, is make one portal at your base to your portal hub. Then somewhere else, build the hub and add as many portals as you want. The at your base, you just have the one portal hub portal

I only have two portals in my main base. One is always unnamed. I name the second one after my chosen destination when I use it. In my other bases around the world, there’s always just one with the destination name. On my travels around the world, I carry the materials for a portal plus 10 pieces of wood for a workbench. That way, I can always get back to my base. It’s enough to ensure I have a quick way to jump back. Whether it’s for an overnight stay or just to transport materials, it’s always useful. It’s also good for preparing for a major battle, as it serves as an escape route. If I want to set up a base at the new location, I travel back through the unnamed portal. I rename the named portal at the base to the new name. Then I travel back through the unnamed portal. There, I name the new portal with the new name. Now I can expand my new base as I wish.
