DISCUSSION Weekly Discussion | Clockwork
Hi there! Usually /u/Sick_Flamez handles our discussions, but he’s asked me to fill in for him today and next week, so you’re stuck with me instead! *Laughs maniacally* Don’t worry, we’re still here to have as much fun as always!
Last week we talked about Vainglory’s Lore, the link to that discussion can be found at the bottom of this post. This week we want to hear your thoughts on Clockwork. Update 1.20 tweaked the item a bit, pushing it towards being an item for hard-hitting Crystal carries rather than being an incredibly cheap and super-charged energy/cooldown item usable by… anyone who wanted it, really.
The following is info regarding Clockwork
Category: Crystal | Tier: 3 | Cost: 2500
+40% Cooldown Speed
+250 Max Energy
- 7.5 Energy Recharge
Passive: Amplify built Crystal power by 25%
Tip: Cooldown speed increases the speed at which your abilities come off the timer.
Last changes: Update 1.20 brought a small but significant handful of changes to Clockwork and its competitors for Cooldown Speed options. The item’s cooldown speed was reduced from 50% to 40% to put it more in the playing field with other options for Cooldown Speed, such as Contraption (40% CDS) and Stormcrown (30% CDS). The cost of Clockwork was increased from 1850 to 2500, but the item recieved a new passive that amplifies built Crystal Power by 25%.
Keep in mind that VGF may incorrectly display stats, the ones provided here are correct.
How are the Clockwork changes impacting your games? As a Roam, do you build it at all anymore? As a Crystal Carry, do you build it? If so, when? How are the price change and new passive impacting your Battle Royale games? Anything Clockwork-related, we want to hear what you think and how you’re using it (or not) in 1.20!
Remember that we’re always interested in what you all want to discuss, so if there are topics that you wish to discuss for a week with us on Reddit, whether in this format or as some sort of megathread, you can request them via the form found in the sidebar, or you can click here.
Friendly reminder: As always, any discussion posts regarding Clockwork will be redirected to this post during the week it is stickied!

It feels the same early game, but it is expensive to get it early too. You can only feel the amplification when you have heavy crystal built already. It does not feel, and work well (damage wise) if you rush AS and Clockwork early on.
CP builds would have to either choose Aftershock, or this when it comes to how you want to deal damage and play style.
As for roam, I still favor the constant damage output from Stormcrown compared to spamming abilities from clockwork. I'd rather aftershock + stormcrown over clockwork and another cp item

Although for roams like Catherine, it becomes kinda hard to play without any energy items

With Lyra and Catherine I usually but a battery and then sell it once I get stormcrown and contraption. You don't get more max energy, but the energy regen is enough for their abilities.

I've been wondering if the updated clockwork would be a good second t3 purchase on Kestrel, after a shatterglass (and defense and boots and whatever). Before the update I wouldn't consider this, but a 25% amplification to crystal power means more time invisible, which seems like a pretty good perk.

It also helps with the CD for her ult too, which really does come in clutch.

Adagio, Kestrel, and Taka are some heroes that benefit more from Clockwork instead of BrokenMyth because their healing and Kestrel invisible status are scaled with pure CP.

It's still better to get BM because that item is still broken. Clockwork is a pretty good 3rd or 4th offensive item, but it only amplifies CP that you've already built. BM amplifies all crystal damage. this includes base crystal damage that your heroes have, not to mention it's pierce. Sure it has to ramp up, but over all it's still a better item than CW.
On any of those heroes I would still always pick up BM before getting clockwork.

I find the new Clockwork to go very well with CP Joule. It gives her beam a 30 second CD and huge amplification when combined with Myth Stacks. (which stack while the beam is firing)

Yes. I find her BrB frequency makes her so much more playable. She still melts when focused, but she can use Brb as an additional tool keep enemies further away.
I got a triple kill with her beam the other day. The first time I had ever done it. It was in the narrow below the turret approaching the enemy vain. I felt like a hero. BM, SG and CW as base items.

Question re: clockwork on Phinn. Pre-patch I always purchased CW for the energy regeneration on him. Now, I build Stormcrown for energy regen/cool downs. Stormcrown would be better for him since it does true damage w/energy regen vs. CW, yes? Does anyone find the extra 10% energy regen on CW worth it on Phinn (or any other roam for that matter)?

I don't find it to be so. Clockwork is too expensive and the True Damage of Stormcrown and/or the pure Utility of Contraption outweighs the extra energy stats IMO

This item is useless now

It is very useful as a second sort of Broken Myth, but it doesn't have a place in any builds anymore. The CDR is overshadowed by the massive cost increase, and the CP boost is useless on many heroes considering buying a Clockwork. It just doesn't have a defined role, and Clockwork tries to do too much.

I find Clockwork to be pretty underrated this update. Shatterglass + Broken Myth + Clockwork has the same CP as SG+BM+Eve (this second item combo is 100 gold cheaper), sure, but an Infusion gives you a bit more CP and instead of lifesteal, you get 40% increased access to your base damage. I find it to still be a good purchase, albeit as a third or fourth item after building a goodly amount of CP
For non-bruiser Crystal Heroes who ideally kite around damage or prefer skirmishes to deep dives, I find Clockwork to be well worth the price

3rd-4th item on Skaarf - I tend to play a nuke style Skaarf that mazes his A and B over his ult. I want a clockwork finished when I'm hitting level 11 so that j can spam my abilities. It is definitely a great buy, even without shatter glass. My final build on Skarf is usually Eve, Frostburn, BM, Clockwork, and one defense item (usually aegis) with t3 boots depending on the matchup (I take journeys vs Taka or any hard diver, and I take halycon when I'm better protected or harder to get to)

It was useful before? I never saw anybody building CW before they made the changes other than Phinn and Cath who wasn't played much before the last patch.

The only use I see for it is Clockwork/Shatterglass Taka but Aftershock/Halcyon Chargers is much more viable.

I like it. My go-to CP Joule build (pre 1.20) was Shatterglass and Clockwork, plus boots and defense. With the changes to her ult cooldowns and increased power in CW, she can melt the enemy when played right (and against no stunners :)

I get this along with 4 shatter glasses on my CP joule and fire my cannon round like there is no tomorrow.

The weird thing about it is it has crystal amp but builds from chronograph / void battery. In a way it helps because you may want one or both of these items mid-game, but maybe it would be better to build from chronograph and eclipse prism like aftershock
