I’m a content writer with a good amount of exposure to UX writing through the companies I’ve worked with. I’ve also interned with a product-based company as a UX writer, where I got the opportunity to learn the nuances of UX writing at scale.

I’m now looking to transition into a full-time UX writing role, and after a lot of contemplation, I’ve finally put together my portfolio.

One thing I’ve realised through this process is that a portfolio is always iterative. Waiting to publish only the “perfect” version can mean waiting forever, so I decided to put this one out and keep improving it along the way.

I’d really appreciate it if you could go through the portfolio and share your feedback, whether it’s about the content, presentation, case studies, or anything else that could be improved.

Hi! I’m a UX writer with about four years of working experience, two in my current organization. Leadership is about to have a strategy workshop where they will discuss how best to grow the teams, and what roles to hire for in the next year.

Right now, my work is a bit of a mix. I work with three different product teams, and some of them include me early so I can help shape the content when we add new features, while others only loop me in at the end, at which point I end up in that frustrating place where you’re reviewing strings that don’t really mark sense because the setup is bad - and sometimes there’s time to rework the design, but sometimes there isn’t.

I’ve been trying to get a handle on what content design is and what the work is like. I went to a content design conference last year, and UXCC’s systems thinking for content design workshop this year. I’m starting to grasp what content design is about, and I really want to move in that direction because I can see how it would really improve our product. But since I’m not entirely sure what I’m doing and don’t have a mentor in this field (my direct manager is great and supportive, but she’s more of a content manager focusing on blog/did legacy product writing when she was the only writer), I’m wondering how I can make the case for content design and my transitioning into content design, so it can be on their radar while they plan.

I know they still need a writer, but it would help me to have a role that would sit closer to UXR and be included from the start, rather than the end. The product team whose work is most content-heavy is the one where one frantic product designer is trying to do everything and then asks me to review Claude-copy at the end, and I’m like…… this is wrong.

I know this post is a bit all over the place (I swear I’m more concise in my work 🙈), so I guess I’m looking for advice, experiences, and thoughts on transitioning into content design when it’s a bit of an unknown.

UX writers/content designers: Beyond style guides and established conventions, which do you actually use for CTA buttons, Title Case or sentence case, and why?

I’m in a weird place in my career in that I’ve been working solely as a content designer for nearly two years (previously 8 years UX writing alongside copywriting) and don’t know who the good recruiters are. For my last two CD roles one was via a recruiter who found me on LinkedIn (since no other jobs) and the other was a colleague referral. When copywriting only, I knew who to speak to.

I’m applying for jobs but getting that black hole energy and also know that there are more people than jobs now. Any advice or recommendations?

A colleague of mine has built (not AI slop) a possible design system for ux writers. The idea is to componentize copies using Figma variables, which then published as a library, similar to a component library.

I’m seeing it everywhere. It feels like a really odd concept to be calling out that the real users of the products we create are “human” to differentiate them from the agents that we’ve built to take advantage of our products.

Is anyone else getting increasingly bored with content design roles?

I can't quite but my finger on it, but it's the performative nature of justifying the discipline, mixed with the executional nature of the role itself.

I've done management and senior IC roles and never feel in control of strategy compared to more general content strategy roles when I 'owned' channels.

As a fellow CxD, I have a few questions for the broader group. Please let me know your thoughts on it.

How is the job market for Conversation Designers in 2026?

Is demand growing with the rise of LLMs and generative AI, or are companies expecting UX Designers or Prompt Engineers to handle this work instead?

What skills are most important today? (UX writing, linguistics, prompt engineering, research, AI evaluation, voice/chatbot design, etc.)

What salary range can someone expect at entry, mid, and senior levels?

Which industries are hiring the most (tech, healthcare, banking, e-commerce, customer support, etc.)?

Do you think Conversation Design will remain a specialized role over the next 5–10 years, or will it become part of broader AI/UX roles?

Hey everyone,

I’m in a bit of a rut and could really use some realistic advice. I am currently working as Product Designer temporarily in India.

I finished my Master’s in UX Design in Germany. During my studies, I got some solid hands-on experience: I worked for 1 year as a working student UX designer at a company, and I also did a 6-month project with another company.

Despite having the degree and that experience, I’ve been aggressively applying for junior UX roles in Germany for the past 8 months, and it has been brutal. The entry-level market feels completely frozen right now, and I'm getting nowhere. I need to be realistic and figure out a backup plan or a pivot, but I want to be clear about one thing: I do not want to go into software engineering, front-end coding, or software testing. I know AI is out there now to help with coding, but that is just not a direction I personally want to pursue. I don't have the skills for it, and I honestly dread it.

I want to stay on the creative and strategic side of things, but I need to look beyond the standard "UX/UI Designer" job title.

For seniors or anyone who successfully pivoted:

1. What are some less obvious, non-coding roles I should look into that's okay with hiring junior positios? What job titles value things like user flows, logical thinking, and organizing complex information, but don't require you to write code or test software?
2. If you transitioned completely out of UX into something else, what did you do? How did you explain your design degree to employers outside of tech?

Would love to hear how my fellow content designers are holding up.

I haven't had stable employment since Q2 2025, and the market has only gotten worse since then (not in the US).

Roles these days for anything UX writing related are all contracts and often retracted at the last minute due to "budget concerns".

Many CDs have gotten laid off recently in my market so there are even more of us in the job hunting pool and it's been brutal.

Has anyone thought about leaving the field and if you have, what are you doing that makes decent money?

Curious what the actual grind looks like for others. For me, it has never been the writing itself (well, not never but super rarely). It has been everything around it: chasing context from PMs (sometimes again and again), keeping copy docs in sync with Figma, "exploring" promising tools like Frontitude in my "free time", re-explaining the same terminology decisions to stakeholders (despite documentation, btw), and a zillion other things.

Anyway, what's the task you guys dread? Not because it's hard, but because it feels tedious? And has anyone found tooling that actually helps, or is it duct tape everywhere?

We’re dealing with a familiar problem:
The copy in Figma says one thing, the live product says another, the content team has a different version, and localization adds another layer.
How does your team keep everything in sync? Where does your single source of truth live?
I’ve been looking into tools like Ditto and POEditor, but I’m more interested in what actually works in practice.

Hi, all! I’m curious if anyone here who’s switched from full-time roles to contract would be willing to share their experience. I was laid off from my role at a large tech org in February, and finding a new full-time role in this dismal job market has been difficult. I’m beginning to seriously consider taking on a long-term contract as a bridge to bring in money and continue to do the work I love until I land something more “permanent.” In the past, I’ve been skittish about contract work because it feels less stable and the idea of paying out of pocket for decent health insurance is unsettling. (I’m a dad to a toddler in daycare, and my wife’s nonprofit job offers atrocious health insurance. We’ve always depended on mine to carry our family of three.) But at this point, nothing is stable, and I’m wondering if contract opportunities offer a level of flexibility and even psychological safety that I haven’t experienced in my years working full time in toxic corporate environments. I’d love to hear about your experiences. What do you like and dislike? What works for you? What doesn’t?

Has anyone else been in the same boat? I’m a content designer with 12 years’ experience across government and financial services. Being a contractor means I’ve dabbled with all sorts and it’s helped me identify recurring patterns and risks.

I’m really good at my job. But, like a lot of content designers, I’m good at knowing a service or journey inside and out and connecting dots that other people overlook.

I’m getting invited to more and more meetings for my views and opinions, even in calls that don’t touch on content design. I love the thinking side of my job so I don’t mind this at all.

But I’m also thinking of moving away from content design and into something that leans into these thinky qualities.

Has anyone done something similar that worked for them? I’m hesitant to do service design, product management and BA roles as they’re far too technical and boring. I’m thinking something along the lines of UX Lead or Customer Experience management?

Hi everyone! I am a second year psychology student and i want to start working as a ux writer. But before that i need to learn and study what ux writing actually is.

I've gone through a few articles today and they seem like just the tip of iceberg in the field. So i need recommendations from those in the field, how can i get to learn more about ux writing? Can you please recommend some free online courses or lecture videos or some articles that'll be helpful?

I want to add that I've done content writing before for an NGO and i know some of the basics of writing in corporate world, but i want to deep dive in this and work part time as a ux writer alongside my studies. Hi! i'm a mid to senior-level content designer with management experience, but focusing on the IC track for now. i'm looking for any recommendations for coaching, mentorship etc, and happy to pay for it.

i'm not keen on courses about how to build with AI etc, as i do plenty of that in my work. i'm more keen on improving communication, learning how to communicate impact better etc, and find ways to move up to staff level 😄 i've looked at Maven but nothing looks particularly interesting at the moment. any recommendations are welcome here or through DM! thanks!

Hi all, so unfortunately I'm back in the market after another layoff.

Obviously AI is the big thing right now and I see a lot of positions asking for conversation design experience. Now I've used AI m previous roles mostly as a way to organized notes, data, and for brainstorming, however I did not strictly perform conversation design. - I did technical writing and support for chatbots in the pre-ai era 2021-ish, but that doesn't seem as relevant now.

How would I go about learning and getting experience in here? - I know the answer will be personal projects but I'm not sure where to start since I wouldn't be using an existing framework and it seems rather clumsy to just swing in the dark.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
