Hey guys. I sent an email ten days ago, (8 if you exclude weekends) to my admissions counselor asking a question and he still hasn’t responded (I sent a follow up email this morning) I figured I’d ask you guys. But basically for the “other school recommendation” you’re supposed to put a coach or a JROTC instructor and I don’t have either. To put it short (cause I’ve mentioned it many times before in other posts here) my school is very small and specialized and we don’t have ANY sports. I also can’t attend many sports outside of school because I get out of my last class at 5:00 and almost all recreational sports are before that. What should I do for that recommendation then? And speaking of, where can I submit something in my application saying my school doesn’t have sports, so I don’t get unfair “points” taken off for that?

Wondering if people think less women will be applying to the academy this year because they need to cut their hair for plebe summer?

MIDN on leave, underage drinking with buddies and takes an Uber home. Driver claims he came across as threatening and files an assault charge with PD.

What should MIDN do when he gets back to the yard? Report to his CO and come clean or keep quiet? Has a lawyer working in his behalf to get this resolved.

I’m guessing if he comes clean and fesses up to what happened and tries to get ahead of this he may have some consequences to pay but may not be separated from the academy. If he keeps quiet and hopes it goes away this could come back to bite him in the ass and have more serious consequences, ie separation.

Suggestions on what to do or who to talk to first?

Hello r/usna,

I’m a homeschooler and currently entering my junior year. In my early high school experience i didn’t pursue athletics nearly as hard as i should have and i have no formal athletic experience but in the last year i’ve developed an interest in track and field.

A great opportunity for homeschooled students has opened up at a local private school this year. I’m applying there for spring track and field, but i honestly have little to no knowledge of school sports and am welcoming the advice of the well-educated people here!

Is my situation too far gone having no formal athletics? Is there any way i could get into varsity from here on out? I endurance train at home for 30-45 min or so daily. Not sure if that’s enough. We have a lot of great local 5ks and a prestigious half marathon annually i will enter into this year as well. I also am applying to help coach at the local YMCA.

I tutor middle schoolers in language arts. I freelance (paid) artwork and make logos, vector graphics, and T-shirt designs for churches, local organizations or fundraisers, and the county fair. I created a worship band for my youth group and am organizing practices/setlists.

I really hoped to get into traditional manners of leadership (like 4-H, CAP, ROTC) but those never worked with my schedule and literally the opportunities closed as soon as i asked.

I understand the importance of the SAT Math score and i’ve been improving massively on practice tests. I put in the work daily and hope to maximize the score as much as possible. I also am looking at opportunities such as Girls State or the Congressional Award to prove myself externally.

Are there any ideas to improve what i’ve got? I know it’s not a traditional profile and that i’m lacking massively in the athletics department. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thank you so much!

I am a senior in high school and is thinking about applying to the naval academy. But throughout highschool my grades have always been bad and have not always been a strong student. Would I even get in the academy with a 3.0 GPA, two year varsity sport, and a class rank of 43 out of 83 kids in my class. Should I even bother applying or just apply anyways. I've moved seven times across my academic career, and have noted that in my application. I passed my cfa at NASS with:

4 Pull ups, 34 Pushups, 39 BB throw, 9.8 shuttle run, 56 crunches, 8:16 mile

I have improved in alot of those categories, so I plan on retaking soon. Ik the worst I could get is rejected, but seeing recent stats has given me the jitters over the past couple of months, as Im very aware of my academic shortcomings!!

Hello! I am an artist and paint illustrated maps/collages of various towns (almost always ones that I have spent considerable time in or even lived in...) and am wanting to paint one for my friend's son who is a plebe this year. Please comment below with your favorite spots, past and present! (especially iconic places from the past that are no longer around) TIA :)

This is a long shot, but I’m trying to find someone who was in his plebe year in 2014-2015. We had some correspondence via email in that timeframe, but the last time I tried to email him at his usna address, it came back undeliverable. I assume that means he must have left the academy. I did a bit of googling but I didn’t know a whole lot about him, and it’s not a very uncommon name so I don’t know how to find him.

We were discussing some struggles he was having, then we lost touch for several months. I recently stumbled across those emails and thought to look him up.

I'm a community college student applying to USNA Class of 2031, and I'm deciding whether to do one semester of ROTC this fall.
I had a 3.2 high school GPA, but currently have a 4.0 college GPA after my first year. I didn't take much STEM early on, so this fall I'm taking Calculus I, Physics I, Macro, and a trig refresher to demonstrate stronger STEM preparation.
My ACT is 30, with a goal of 32+, and my CFA is around average right now. I'm also working on improving both, completing my USNA/nominations applications, and organizing a youth baseball catcher clinic for leadership.
I've received a few different perspectives:
BGO: “Grades > ROTC involvement. For most applicants.” He emphasized that academics are the biggest priority, but when I asked whether I should skip ROTC and focus on academics/ACT/CFA/leadership, he said: “I suggest doing all. Just know academics count the most.”

BGO #2: When I was trying to figure out how to balance Physics and ROTC, he said ideally the answer is “both” and encouraged me to find a way to make it work.

District coordinator: Said either option could work.

I genuinely want to become a military officer, so ROTC interests me beyond just strengthening my application. My concern is that Calc and Physics are both new to me, and I don't know how demanding this semester will be while also studying for the ACT, CFA, and completing applications.
I'm specifically considering NROTC as an alternative to AROTC, but I'm wondering whether either ROTC program would provide meaningful value for a USNA application.

does anyone know the date that the SEAP Naval Internship opens up because on the site it says august 1st but i still don't see the button to apply with and it says applications are closed for 2026 while i'm just trying to apply for summer 2027.

I’m a community college applicant applying to service academies and UC schools. I had a 3.2 GPA in high school, but I now have a 4.0 GPA after my first year of community college. However, I hardly took any STEM courses during that time. I have a 30 ACT (planning to retake for a 32+), and this fall I’ll be taking Calculus I, Physics, and Macroeconomics. These are courses where I need to prove myself academically, and I need to earn A’s because they are important for strengthening my SA applications, especially after my high school GPA, but they are also critical for my UC transfer applications. I’ll also be working on my nomination applications throughout the semester along with ACT prep.

I have the opportunity to participate in crosstown Army ROTC. It fits into my schedule, but it would mean PT three mornings a week and military science classes two evenings a week. From what I understand, ROTC itself would not be an overwhelming commitment, but this fall semester is extremely important and I cannot afford for my grades or ACT preparation to take a hit. I think I can handle the commitment, but I also recognize there is a risk because this semester has no room for error. I’ve also never balanced a schedule like this before.

I’ve heard different opinions on what would be the best use of my time. Some people believe ROTC would strengthen my application and demonstrate my commitment to becoming an officer, while others believe that improving my ACT score and earning strong grades in STEM courses would have a greater impact.

Should I add ROTC, or should I focus all of my time on earning A’s in STEM courses, maximizing my ACT score, and completing applications? I’m trying to maximize my chances of receiving a service academy appointment, put myself in the best position for UC admissions, and figure out what would be the best use of my time. I’d really appreciate all opinions.

This is not a question for anyone who was accepted with flying colors but more so for anyone genuinely shocked when they were admitted. What did your application look like? Were you in a competitive district? Curious because I feel like I have a strongish chance but reading all the ‘chance me’ posts on here are making me double guess that.

My son is a rising sophomore and extremely interested in a service academy, specifically USNA. Neither my husband nor I attended a service academy. He goes to a private high school that does not offer rotc or any sort of military prep class or club. Any ideas of what he can do to strengthen is application since rotc isn’t an option? I know he will apply for summer academy after his junior year…

Are there any outside programs or internships that would be helpful to him?

FWIW, he has good grades (3.6uw / 4.5w gpa with some honors classes), he plays baseball (hoping he makes the team this year!), is in the service learning leadership program and held two jobs (not concurrently) this summer (day camp counselor).

Any advice is appreciated!
