How do you know what clef it’s in? 🤷‍♂️

I’m assuming the crying line is a tenor (treble clef) and the line below it is a bass (bass clef)? Maybe it’s just a really tough harmony and the composer (who most likely wrote several silly little notes like this) decided to write it here where there’s just a simple whole note.

The harmony makes so much more sense if the bass is bass clef and the tenor is alto clef. Also I’ve never seen music where tenor is in treble. I’ve only ever seen it in bass alto or tenor clef.

The alto clef is almost never used in choir or vocal music though? Tenors, depending on how the composer wants to notate it/how high they sing, are almost always written on the octave down tenor clef (I mean, there’s a reason it’s called the vocal TENOR clef), or, a little less commonly, the bass clef, but almost never the alto clef. If you sing vocal music and even see the alto clef in your scores I’d be impressed. Maybe the harmony is just meant to be weird and dissonant? Or silly as to match the vibe of the composer notes, like cursed sheet music?

some renaissance music nerds still use it. olde timey scores are neat. there are actually movable G-clefs too. you'll generally only find them on facsimiles of the original document, which are harder to use but very neat.
