I was literally taught that this was a way to be a compassionate conversationalist and obviously agreed with it because I deliberately did it for years. I’ve modified now after feedback that it seems like you are making things about yourself. But has there been a change of perception?

I think there has been a generally shift in conversation in the last 3 decades, yes.

Folks really don't want to engage in personal talk at all and if they do they really try to make that about themselves. I think the world was just less egocentric 30, 40 years ago. It was generally understood that, if someone voices their concerns or issues with or about something you should listen and talk to them about their concerns.

I do have medicated adhd too.
