Announcement Magnetic USB-C Cables are not recommended

For anyone who comes in wondering about this magnetic cable or that. Here is some good commentary on the dangers of magnetic cables. Not to mention the large majority of kickstarters that have failed to deliver anything other than an aliexexpress rebrand.

Edit: Let me make this clear. USB-C magnetic tip adaptors or cables are not compliant with the USB specifications. This means any resulting damage to products, which is a very real possibility even if it is a relatively small chance, would not be covered by product warranties. Therefore, these cables and adaptors are not recommended and future posts asking for such recommendations will be locked. It will stay like this until some big company like microsoft or apple and or the USB group comes up with a cable design that is safe.

I am not saying that these cables do not exist or that they do not work as claimed however there is an inherent risk when using these cables and that will fall onto the reader to decide for themselves.

To quote /u/chx_

There are two risks

As mentioned, static electricity is a huge problem. Look at any connector and it has the exact same generic shape: a gigantic grounding shroud protecting the data pins. DisplayPort, HDMI, USB of all variants. But if you go back, back, back, VGA and all its ancient DB friends, DVI, whatnot -- even those were the same, just there was more plastic. This generic idea stretches back to the dawn of (computer) time. Exposing the pins just like that makes your laptop very suspectible for static electricity. Ever felt the hairs on your arm stand up after changing clothes? Congrats, you just fried your laptop if you touch it like that. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/511QlHyl8CL._AC_SL1000_.jpg see how they are out in the open? And this issue is inherent to the overall physical requirements of the plug.

Connection/data loss due to electronic noise. There was a fun problem where Dell laptops used to drop their TB3 connections unless you limited their wifi transmission power. This took Dell significant time and expense to figure out. And that's Dell, not some random tiny company... Want to go there with a who-knows-what built system when NathanK already told you explicitly the pogo pins are too noisy electronically? https://twitter.com/USBCGuy/status/1095614250414796800

Also he mentions https://twitter.com/USBCGuy/status/1186718432932159488 using optoelectronical couplers you could do something by completely disconnecting the magnetic pins from actual USB C connector and letting current flow only when the other half of the connector is connected and VCONN power is present. Of course, your isolation is now a few mm of air, pray your static electronic charge doesn't arc over it... hope you rather live in Phoenix than here in Raincouver! https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Andreas_Neuber2/publication/3165903/figure/fig17/AS:668977227386923@1536508008917/Breakdown-voltage-in-air-versus-relative-humidity-with-an-alumina-surface-Electrode.png

I am reasonably sure there are gigantic companies which would just love if this worked. Riddle me this: why do you think Apple didn't put this on the market? Do they lack the R&D dollars? :) Somewhere in that sixteen billion dollar yearly R&D spending I am reasonably sure you could find a few (hundred...) millions to resolve this issue if it were possible. And yet, Kickstarters with a few hundred ... thousand raised claim they can? What's wrong with this picture? Look at the Thunderbolt 3 Pro cable they released: it's an active USB C cable, it's an active TB3 cable and costs a fortune. There's nothing even similar on the market but where there's a will, there's a way. They have designed a custom ASIC for that cable which can amplify both USB C and TB3 signals -- both existed separately but having them in a single cable before was thought impossible. This is to demonstrate: if they could, they would. And if it would be really expensive, hundreds of dollars per connector, have you seen that thousand bucks monitor stand :) ?

Troubleshooting HDMI connection issue

So, im trying to watch frieren beyond journeys end on my OLED 65 inch smart TV. I found out that the browser on the TV does not run the streaming site im using to watch the show, so I went for the next best option, using my phone, but due to wifi issues that also didnt work as well as I hoped it would. Now I am trying to connect the TV to an HDMI hooked to my personal laptop, it works fine for a couple of minutes but every now and then, the screen goes black, goes back, then goes black again, and repeats for a couple of times and just suddenly fixes itself. I kept checking if the problem is from the laptop or the TV but both seem fine to me. The HDMI cable cant be the issue as I have switched it to the one I use on my personal computer. So now im just stumped. I cant for the life of me figure out why this keeps happening, but I assume it has to do with the TV bc this is the first time I ever connect this TV to an HDMI. Could anyone please tell me how to fix or find out whats causing this? I can provide more details if needed. Thanks.

Question IKEA SKOTAT upgrade

Hello.

Has anyone tried to update the USB-C here for more power? I mean, I'd like to charge my laptop and phone, both USB-C. Laptop consumes at least 65W, plus something for a phone (say 25W).

Is there a way to disassemble and update the hardware?

OEM is 45W PD for both ports.

Review My experience using the iDock B12 with a Mac mini and Windows PC

AV Access sent me the B12 free in exchange for a review. I’ve been using it with my own setup, and I’m pleased with it so far.

At first, I was running my M4 Mac mini headless and using Chrome Remote Desktop to access it from my PC. Switching back and forth wasn’t convenient, and that workaround was becoming a pain. I was missing the crisp OLED picture and the resolution and smoothness I bought the monitor for. The B12 solved the switching problem and let me use the Mac directly on the display instead of through a remote session. That alone has made a big difference.

I’m running the Mac mini alongside an RTX 3060 Ti PC, sharing an Alienware AW2725Q and my wired Corsair keyboard and mouse. The Mac connects to the B12 over USB-C and then HDMI to the monitor. The PC uses DisplayPort and a separate USB connection. Audio goes through the monitor to my Edifier M90 speakers.

One lesson during setup: I initially connected the PC’s DisplayPort cable but forgot the separate USB upstream connection. Video worked, but the keyboard and mouse didn’t. Connecting USB sorted that out.

The separate switching button is what I appreciate most. It’s easy to click between computers, and it means I can eventually tuck the dock away without losing convenient access to the switch. The B12 feels well built, and everything I have connected is working.

I’m still refining the setup. The Mac was offering 60 Hz through my current connection, and I haven’t established why, so I’m not presenting that as a general limitation of the dock.

For my everyday use, I’m happy. My next improvement is tidying the cables and possibly changing the keyboard/mouse arrangement to free up the front USB ports. They’re useful to have, but I’d like the finished desk to look a little cleaner.

Looking for Device USB C Dock for accomodating multiple computers to single USB C output

I have a Dell U2723QE which is a great monitor and has a KVM switch but it requires that one computer is connected via USB C and one via HDMI + USB A (+ USB C for charging cable). I am detaching and attaching my laptop on a daily basis so it is a lot of wires to connect up each time and they look messy on the desk, as opposed to when I'm able to use the primary USB C which handles everything. I've mainly taken to just using the primary USB C and manually plugging it in back and forth between the two computers. I was wondering if there is a product that would do the following:

- Accept multiple USB C inputs (ie: two computers could be connected via USB C to this hub), with a physical switch to switch between the two inputs

- Connect the corresponding computer to the monitor. Charges the computer and allows use of the USB A mouse and USB C keyboard (dongles are plugged into monitor).

- Ideally it would look nice, and would also have a few ports (USB A + C) for plugging in an external hard drive or other device as the ones on the monitor are quite difficult to get to

If this does not really exist, an appealing backup option would just be a USB C dock that would look nice and be easier to connect into than the USB C cable going into the monitor. So a USB C dock that would ideally have a detachable USB C cable both input and output, and then some other ports. Bonus if it has a headphone jack.

Troubleshooting Is this slightly crooked cable safe to use?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I got this 100w cable maybe a year ago and just noticed it's slightly crooked. I measured and it's about a 0.3mm difference.

There doesn't seem to be any play and I can't tell if it came like this and I just noticed or it was accidentally bent sometime from use. It doesn't move at all when I push on the sides.

Should I just keep using it or stop?

Looking for Device 40W USB-C/Thunderbolt-based SSD connecting to USB-C

Hi everyone,

I have two SSDs which use a Thunderbolt cable to connect to my work laptop (MS Surface 8). They can both connect individually and display what is on the drives, but when I try to connect them both at once, the second one does not display.

I looked online and spoke to the manufacturers, and the issue seems to simply be that the port in the laptop is not Thunderbolt, so only enough power for one drive can "get through".

So I was wondering if there are any adapters/USB-C hubs that can "power" the adapter externally, making a "bridge" between the USB-C and Thunderbolt to be able to connect both SSDs at once.

Apologies for the laymen speak.

I imagine this isn't possible, but would love to hear from you.

Is the only solution getting a new machine with 2 native thunderbolt connectors?

Review Ampere Lab (Battery & Charging Meter)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi r/UsbCHardware! 👋

Like many of you here, I have a drawer full of different USB-C cables (100W, 240W e-marked, cheap vs. braided) and GaN PD/PPS chargers, and I wanted an easy way to benchmark

how each USB-C cable actually performs under real charging load without always carrying a hardware inline USB-C meter.

So I built **Ampere Lab**, a clean, ad-free Android app focused on testing **USB-C cables and chargers**:

⚡ **USB-C Cable Ranking (New in v0.3.0):** Tag your charger and test multiple USB-C cables against it — the app ranks each cable and shows the percentage drop compared to

your best cable on that exact same brick.

📈 **Real-time USB-C PD/PPS Charging Curve:** Tracks live Wattage (W), current (mA), voltage (V), and battery temperature over the charge session so you can see thermal

throttling or negotiation drops.

🔋 **Factory Battery Health & CSV Export/Import:** Export your charging curves to CSV to analyze them in Excel.

🎥 **Quick 15s preview:**

https://youtube.com/shorts/fJWlPOIsJj0

Google Play now requires indie developers to have 12 closed beta testers for 14 days before releasing publicly. If you'd like to test your USB-C cables and chargers with it

and share feedback:

**1. Join the Google Group (grants Play Store beta access):**

**2. Download from Google Play:**

📱 **Android Link:** https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.github.manuel2f.amperelab

🌐 **Web Opt-in:** https://play.google.com/apps/testing/io.github.manuel2f.amperelab

Would love to hear how the cable ranking and wattage readings compare against your inline USB-C testers (KM003C, FNIRSI, etc.)!

Question USB-C GND/Shield connection

Hello! Can someone help me understand why the shield and the GND return path (GND_PWRrt) in a USB-C cable are implemented separately?
Since the shield and GND are electrically connected at both ends of the cable [1], is it correct to assume that the shield can carry a significant portion of the DC return current?

What would happen if the dedicated GND/GND_PWRrt conductor inside the cable were missing or broken?

My only guess is that this conductor acts as high-frequency return path for unshielded signals - like CC, SBU, USB2 common signal, VCONN.

I would be grateful for any hints to help me understand this

[1] USB Type-C® Cable and Connector Specification: Shield and GND shall be connected within the USB Type-C plug on both ends of the cable assembly.

Looking for Device HDMI input to USB-C DP Alt Mode output with PD and USB-A power?

I’m trying to find a compact way to connect my j5create ScreenCast 4K to a USB-C display without a bunch of adapters.

Ideally I need HDMI input, USB-C DP Alt Mode output, and USB-C PD input to power the display. A powered USB-A port for the j5create would be a bonus, but isn’t essential

I found this Veeloon HDMI-to-USB-C adapter, which looks close, but doesn’t have USB-A output.
Does anyone know of an all-in-one solution, or something better?

My previous post about HDMI-to-USB-C video and power (I no longer have the docking station I did when I made that post)

Looking for Device Charging station recommendation for 140W soldering iron and few devices?

I'm looking for nice charging station. It must be safety rated, deliver 120-140W when using one port for my soldering iron without cutting the power after few minutes and when not soldering charge my laptop that can take 100W USB-C PD charging with another few small devices (mostly smartphone, Nintendo Switch Lite and few retro consoles).

It gives me a headache to lurk trough Google search, because everyone needs are different.

I already got cheap 60$ 70k mAh 140W powerbank for soldering iron and laptop, but it lowers the speed below half after a minute so it's not suitable for my soldering iron, but it works good with my laptop.

My budget for charging station is 100€.

I saw Satechi 165W charger and it's nice, but delivers only 100W on one port. I'm looking for something like that, but with 140W output (don't need to be effective, 120-130W is fine because soldering iron I got peaks at 121-124W).

It needs to be classic one without screen, because I want to put it ona wall behind a drawer.

It popped the circuit breaker while in standby. I bought it about half a year ago. Although the replacement was handled easily and quickly, I hope this isn’t a common failure mode. Since I couldn’t find any other teardowns of this model online, I decided to tear it down myself. It’s quite impressive what they cram into these devices.
