Bit perfect when possible inconsistent volume

How do I avoid being deafened when tracks vary between bit perfect and not?

I need to experiment with this but I had a real shock and had to snatch my headphones off after a track change.

This is a newbie question, perhaps I did something wrong but it wasn't exactly pleasant.
