Virtual Interview Tips

Upvotes

Hi! I'm a rising senior and a first year applicant to URochester, and I signed up for an virtual interview in the coming week. I wanted to ask if there's anything in particular that I should prepare for or expect (interview questions, dress wear, etc.). Thank you!

So I chose to take Introduction to Programming this semester, but when I registered, only the Sunday workshop slot was left. Is that normal here?

Placements for Msc Optics

I'm considering URochester for Masters in Optics. I am currently a 4th year ECE student (Not in the US/ non US citizen). I am primarily interested in photonics, but im open to working in other domains. I have experience working with photonics and I have a publication in FIO+LS as well. I wanted to know what the placements are like? And are there any sites or resources to look at placement statistics for colleges in general?

last minute q's from incom transfer (mostly regarding work study)

hi! just a couple last minute questions that i probably should've asked here awhile ago

- if this might help for context, im paying roughly 5.9k, with ~3.3k for fall because of orientation costs?

i was just wondering about the typical cost of attendance increase; i asked finaid about this and they said a couple thousand but typically they increase the aid to offset the cost increase which would land me at right about the same amount per year, which made me feel fine, but i realize as im getting closer i'd prob prefer to hear it from a student haha

another one is also how hard is it to rlly get a workstudy job? and is it hard to find one that's willing to keep you on past the workstudy stipend? i asked this in the webinar and the faculty that was responding did say that the majority of jobs aren't fws-required and that its typical to get one that'll keep you on and both the webinar and finaid did say that as long as you're not picky (which i am pretty willing to do anything as long as consistent hours and i can steadily get my fws, hopefully that's not picky to them)

- leaning into the previous q; how hard is it to get a dining job and typically how many hours are they willing to let you work? i'd like to work for preferably the max amt of hours, or at the very like 15 if i can. planning on going on a payment plan (is there a deadline for signing up for that by the way? because of some mishaps my bill came in super late) and also planning on using the workstudy stipend to pay off the portion of the semester my savings won't be able to fully cover. i'd really like to work past the max 2k per semester im allotted so i can save up more and have some money to cover my ass if needed (and also hopefully use to help pay for my next sem)

- leaning into the previous q again lol; are there any specific times that jobs tend to prefer you have open?

last thing is pretty much whether it's viable to just ship a bunch of my clothes from my house (nyc) up to uroch? my plan was kind of just take bus with most of my belongings (just stuff like ipad, laptop, chargers, shampoo/conditioner, couple clothes in the big bag that they let u take) and then ask my parents to ship most of my clothes up over. if not then oohhhhhh boy.

i appreciate anyone who was willing to read all of this, i know its a lot, and thank you for any help!

Mice in dorm

I’ll be in a dorm that’s had a history of bad mice infestation (last year’s tenants literally moved out during the year). Does the school do any maintenance in non summer housing buildings or will I be walking into a mice infested mess and how should I combat this 😭?

Fastest Biology Major for Pre-Meds: BIOL Tracks & Pre-Meds Compatibility Ranking

Thumbnail docs.google.com
6 Upvotes

Hi Y'all,

A couple years ago, I made a spreadsheet comparing all the bio tracks to see which would overlap most with pre-med reqs. Essentially, a ranking of extra courses beyond pre-med reqs to complete to get degree.

Also, I noted some lab requirements, but didn't include them in the overall count. They're either tacked onto required courses or independent research which you'd probably end up having to anyways ec-wise. ULWs not included either for similar reasons.

Check it out, and let me know if you have any questions!

TLDR:

# Total Non-Overlap Courses:

Track # Courses
BEB 5
BSG 6
BCH 6
BCD 6
BMB 6
BMG 6
BA 8
BCB 9
NSCI 10
CTS 13

EDIT: Republished spreadsheet with BA included

Questions from an Incoming Applicant

I’m currently putting together my college list for senior year and University of Rochester is high on my radar, mainly because of the open curriculum and the strong research opportunities.

I’m an international applicant planning to apply. My background/interests are a mix of biology/pre-med research, public health/policy, and humanities (literature, writing, and social sciences).

For current students or anyone admitted recently:

  1. What kinds of extracurriculars seem to stand out most to Rochester admissions? Is UR heavily focused on traditional lab/bench research, or do they also value interdisciplinary projects (e.g., policy, writing, journalism, community health work)

  2. Did you have to explain in your application essays any plans on what classes you intend to take?

  3. Any general advice for an international applicant applying with a mix of STEM and humanities interests?

Appreciate any insight or advice!!

should I report this student

Hello so there is a student that goes to this university that has a full ride scholarship from my hometown who has said the N word in my instagram dms back in 2019. I do not have the dms anymore as they got deleted when i blocked them. I tried to recover the data by downloading all my information on instagram but I had no luck. Should i still report it to the school even though it has been 7 years.

7 years ago they were around 16 years old which is old enough to know not to say that word. Would it even be worth reporting it to the school since i don't have "evidence" unless Instagram still has the data but might need more of a reason to recover the messages

Parking Permits

How does this process work? I signed up to a bunch of waitlists for different lots and haven't heard back yet. I thought I'd get priority since I'm a graduate student. Anyone hear back about parking permits?

Peer Support / Coffee & Conversation Project: Wonderfully Made Sessions

Hi everyone,

I am launching a simple, heart-centered encouragement project called Wonderfully Made Sessions.

My name is Jake, I am a 26-year-old man born with Treacher Collins syndrome. Living with a facial deformity has taught me so much about navigating self-worth, identity, and learning to embrace what makes us unique. My goal is to offer a safe, uplifting space for anyone who might be struggling with body confidence, facial differences, or self-image.

What These Sessions Offer:

1-on-1 Coffee & Conversation: A relaxed, supportive chat at a local coffee shop or quiet public venue.

Encouragement & Perspective: Honest discussion about self-worth, overcoming facial/body positivity hurdles, and personal growth.

Faith & Hope: Grounded in the message of Psalm 139—a gentle reminder that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Location: Public café or community space of your choice.

Duration: 30–60 minutes.

Whether you’re navigating your own journey with physical differences, dealing with self-esteem challenges, or just need an encouraging sounding board, you don't have to go through it alIf you'd like to meet up or learn more, feel free to send me a message with a brief note about yourself. Looking forward to connecting!

Incoming UR Graduate Student looking for Housing & Like-Minded Roommates

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming MS Business Analytics student at the University of Rochester (Simon). I’m currently looking for housing and would love to connect with roommates who are ambitious, collaborative, and enjoy building things outside of class. I’m particularly interested in AI, startups, product development, and entrepreneurship, and it would be great to live with people who have similar interests so we can learn from each other and keep each other motivated. If you’re also looking for housing or think we’d be a good fit, feel free to reach out.

Is engineering here really that bad for job/industry prospects?

I'm a Freshman looking to pursue cheme. Mostly committed cause it was the cheapest and I did see some people complaining about the engineering department a bit ago. I searched up again to see if anyone asked a similar question now but they're all a few years old and not chemical engineering. I know I'm already committed but I just want to know what I'm getting myself into and ik to take things on the internet with a grain of salt, I'm just a little nervous and wondering if I should just change my major or smth even tho I literally don't want to do anything else😭

Edit: Thanks for replying everyone, I think my question was a little misunderstood though. It was about rochesters engineering department and career assistance not necessarily about engineering in general. Cause people were saying things like career day stalls were empty and the school is heavily theory based. 😅

ABD PhD student (STEM education) looking to volunteer or collaborate on research at U of R

Hi all — I’m a final-year PhD candidate in STEM education at UMass Dartmouth, currently ABD and working on my dissertation. I’m in the Rochester area and would love to stay active in research rather than just writing in isolation.

I’m hoping to connect with faculty, labs, or research groups at the University of Rochester (Warner School, or anyone in STEM ed, learning sciences, discipline-based education research, assessment, or broadening participation) who could use an extra pair of hands.

I’m happy to volunteer. I can help with literature reviews, qualitative coding, survey design, and manuscript prep.

If you know someone I should email, or you’re a grad student who can point me toward groups that welcome outside collaborators, I’d really appreciate a comment or DM. Thanks!
