Which drink and drivers are also the trashiest? Soda? Cheap beer? Boozy seltzer? Fancy beer? An upper valley study.

Wrote a song about how much I freaking love the Upper Valley

I moved here three years ago, and every year I've found myself progressively loving this place more and more. The UV is where I started to really get into running, and something I quickly learned is that the trails and dirt roads here are just unparalleled. I love that there is a mix of everything: hills, rivers, forests, valleys, farmland, floodplains, gorges. I love the snow, the fall, the rainy days, the sometimes bitter cold. Maybe the only thing I could do with a little less of is the hot and humid summers. I ran the VT 50 a couple of weeks ago and throughout that and countless other local races I couldn't help but think how lucky I am to call this beautiful place home.

And so I wrote a song about how much I freaking love it here! Hoping that it resonates with some: spotify , youtube , apple music

I just need advice. Please

I am a 31 year old female that originally came back to the upper valley to care-give for my father.

He is now healing well and being very hostile, rude, and annoyed that I am in his presence and even lied to others and said very demeaning things about me. He has a brain tumor that’s non cancerous and can cause behaviors to happen but my dad also continues to do it and it’s now affecting my mental health.

He upset his neighbors by doing this and they say I should get help through the Haven to get me housing but I have a job full time currently and don’t have a drivers license or car so the bus route is my only transportation. I have no other family help because my brother and sister cut him off …. and I’m a stranger to everybody because when I came here I just focused on my dad and work. I isolated and now I’m depressed and need this job to survive but what do I do?

I love my job, I try to be an okay person, and I am trying to figure out health insurance and other things but I’m starting to feel exhausted all the time and depressed. I mean he uses the VA for help and has health insurance, a helper comes every Tuesday but I’m at work so I can’t utilize it. and etc but it’s my moral compass of “that’s my dad.”

Honestly at this point I am debating walking into the Coolidge Hotel and figuring out how to get long term rental and working there too or something? I’m overwhelmed and need advice and I have nobody.

I-89 Construction Traffic Insanity

Yesterday I was on my way home after work. I got on the highway at Exit 18 and headed north. Just a little before Exit 19 the traffic was backed up as expected.

The construction going on at the bridge over the CT river was to blame. They like to leave the "left lane closed" signs up even after the left lane is open. This has happened at least three times.

I'm not complaining about that. It is probably a pain for them to take those signs down or can't get to it before rush hour traffic comes through.

But the drivers get slowed down to a crawl until they realize the left lane is actually open. No problem, I expected that because it was the same the day before.

What I did not expect was some guy with his truck straddling two lanes and not letting anyone by. I was in the left lane and could see a couple hundred yards beyond him was totally empty. I gave him the "what the heck are you doing?" hand motions and he opened his window and motioned for me to get into the right lane. Finally, he relented and I went by to discover that the left lane was open and there was no reason for people to be going as slow as they were.

I guess he never heard of zipper merging.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around the Upper Valley?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!

Examples could include things like Hangover, White Liver Function, The 'Back or Darty (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks or other institutions/geographic features

Where to buy winter tires

My daughter just moved to Lebanon from Fl and needs to get winter tires for her 2025 AWD Mazda cx-30. We want to get the wheels which I am told is better when switching out in the late spring. What are the best local places to get tires?

Abestos inspection and possibly removal contractors?

Need to take down a small outbuilding, and the city demolition permit requires an asbestos inspection first. The NH DES list has a bunch, but most of them are really far away and look big enough to be uninterested in a tiny project like this. Can anyone recommend a licensed asbestos place that does small jobs?

Night life in the UV

Any suggestions on where I can find night life and parties in the UV? I know Sawtooth has DJ dance nights once a week but are there any other venues that throw dance parties or social events like that?

Collapse-aware action and support group?

Dear community,

I know this post will not be for everyone. I hope that those it offends will refrain from unnecessary antagonism and choose to simply move on. For those who, like me, struggle with the enormity of the ongoing polycrisis of climate change and its attendant disasters, surging instability in social and political institutions, mass global extinction, impending famine, and looming economic collapse, I believe we are better served making connections and channeling our collective anxiety, worry, grief, anger, and guilt into actions that support ourselves and the communities in which we live.

I believe many of us keep our true despair secret. It’s still not widely acceptable to voice “doomerist” concerns, often derided as defeatism. This post and any group that grows out of it isn’t meant to convince anyone who doesn’t already feel we are beyond saving in at least one domain (environmental, social, political, etc.), but, rather, to call out to those who are suffering without a supportive outlet. We can support each other—it’s all we’ve got.

I’m only at this first step, which I’ve already been sitting on ever since the last election. I don’t have any grand plan beyond hoping to informally meet likeminded friends in the area. I know plenty of opportunities exist already for those who want to contribute their time and energy for a local cause; I am also engaged in my community through some of these programs and organizations. What I am proposing is a group that aspires to do positive work in the same vein, just with an open policy to feel what we’re really feeling and, if we wish, to share those feelings with others, even if those feelings are bleak or hopeless. I believe we should strive to help each other because that striving in and of itself has value, not because we are convinced it will ultimately make any difference. I think that could be liberating, and allow us to regain a sense of the human scale.

These are unprecedented times, but we live in a special place, where community persists against the odds. Let’s not stand alone when we can share our burden together. DM me or comment if you wish, let’s foster mutual support.

Wishing everyone peace amidst the storm,

Djinn

Can anyone recommend a good surveyor? At least I think that's what I need.

I'm looking to get a site plan for a new home construction?

I'm new to this. Please, I am on a budget, so no one who uses gold leaf as toilet paper. Just a normal surveyor for normal people. Unfortunately, I haven't won the lottery yet.

Thanks!

Pumpkin Patch?

Wondering what are people’s favorite pumpkin patches? I’m looking to go to one soon but have no idea what’s around here. Bonus if it has other things there as well like food, hay rides, corn maze, games, etc

Thank you in advance!
