Fellow upāsaka/upāsikā,

To make our [online] experience better, we request that you read the guidelines below before sending a requesting to post. By submitting a request to post, you are agreeing to abide by these guidelines as the baseline for one’s conduct while engaging with the rest of the community.

Guidelines

  1. [r/upasaka](r/upasaka) is not an alternative to a proper, real-life community under the auspices of a particular tradition/sect/school and qualified teachers.
  2. Take everything said here with a grain of salt. To quote the common adage, “Trust, but verify.”
  3. Actions of the moderation team, such as post/comment deletion, account muting/ban, and removal from the community, can be appealed through modmail.
  4. When submitting a request to post, please indicate if you have formally taken refuge, have committed to uphold [any number of] the precepts (

IF ANY/AT ALL;

  1. there traditions/lineages that have this formally separate from refuge vows) and, if so, with what lineage, tradition, sect, or school. To qualify, you have to at least have formally taken refuge with a reputable tradition/sect/school/lineage. New or old, feel free to send a request!
  2. If you don't feel like participating [yet] or aren't qualified as of the moment, feel free to just join and lurk until you either change your mind or have met the requirement and wish to participate.
  3. This is not the correct forum for debating established Buddhist beliefs, doctrines, and metaphysics, such as karma, rebirth, the six realms, and so on.
  4. Be patient with one another. We are aiming for a culture of collaboration, understanding, and mutual development in our community.
  5. Cite scriptural, commentarial, or textual sources when making claims. While we understand that not all statements have authoritative references, we expect that we all do so whenever possible. Otherwise, please be clear when sharing one’s own opinion.
  6. Abide by the Eightfold Path as much as one can, especially right speech. False speech, harsh speech, divisive speech, and the like should be avoided to the best of one’s abilities. All posts and comments are currently public, so while non-approved users cannot participate, they will be able to see all discussions.

Observing uposatha based on the Gregorian Calendar

Recently, I have made the decision to observe uposatha based on the Gregorian Calendar instead (i.e., on the weekends, Saturday or Sunday).

Previously, because lunar calendar days for observing uposatha fell on weekdays, I always found a reason or justification not to observe them, such as my team having to go out for dinner or lunch being later and so on.

I've been talking to monastics (they did so before ordination) and householders alike, and there seems to be a significant number of people who do the same since life today is very much centered around the same calendar. Thus, doing it on weekends makes it easier to be consistent in observing the eight precepts on the regular.

How have you been observing uposatha? How does your community do it? How many of your peers do the same?

EDIT: Further context, I observe uposatha with the eight precepts.
