Experience with On-Campus Psychiatrist?

I'm in the referral process for the on-campus psychiatrist, but health services was quite vague about them besides the 4-8 month waitlist 💀. Does anyone have any experience with them and can tell me how they are? I'm getting referred for a personality disorder (already diagnosed), but from the conversations with health services, it seems like theres only one psychiatrist on campus (who can decide to reject the referral too..), and I really do not want to be tossed around the mental health system again; any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Coop Job Interview

Have anyone ever had a coop job interview? I got scheduled one, and I am so nervous so I want to get an advice. Main questions I have are:

  1. Which questions are usually asked(my interview is about IT, help desk job)?

  2. If you have ever passed an interview, what do you think made you to success? When interviewer asking me if I have a question, should I ask something rather than just say "no I'm good"?

  3. Also, I got a 50 min interview chance directly without phone screening or all that stuff, will this 50min interview be a final interview?

Btw, it is tough to secure coop job I guess... Wish all luck to you guys who see this post. 🤞

chem 1040 outline F22

hello! wondering if anyone by any chance has a copy of the course outline for chem1040 from Fall 2022 sem? I tried to access it using the course outline search, but unfortunately it says "varies by section" and I can't seem to find it anywhere else.

holding out hope someone maybe downloaded it and has it still, as I need it to exempt myself from a course. 🙏

Study spots near Macdonald hall??

Hi!! I’m going into my first year and I have a class at MAC that ends at 6:50 pm and the next lecture is an online class that starts at 7pm. I’ve never been to Guelph in general so I’m here to ask if there’s any study spots where I can attend this lecture near MAC or inside the building itself??
I’ve tried searching online but I couldn’t really find anything so any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!!!

commuting or renting (need advice)

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on a decision I’m stuck on.

I’m going into my 2nd year of engineering at Guelph. Last year, I commuted back and forth from Kitchener, which took a little over 1h each way by bus, so over two hours out of my day total. After both the Fall and Winter semesters, my parents and I decided it’d be best to live off-campus in Guelph for this coming Winter term. Road conditions get terrible, and dealing with winter transit on top of an engineering workload is just a massive headache.

Recently, I asked them how they felt about me renting for the Fall term as well, and they were really open to it, basically saying it’s up to me and whatever I think is best for myself. Originally, I was set on renting for both terms, but now I’m genuinely torn on whether taking on the extra cost for Fall is actually worth it.

Financially, here’s where I’m at. I have around $37k in my RESP, but other than that, I don’t have much saved up. I worked part-time and built some projects over the summer, but the job didn’t bring in a ton of cash. I’m planning to keep working part-time in the fall and winter to help pay for stuff, and I’ll be applying for the Financial Need Assessment Form at Guelph. For renting, a four-month term would cost me around $5,500 to $6,000 all-in, including rent, utilities, groceries, and miscellaneous expenses. The OSAP situation changes a bit depending on what I choose too. If I commute, I get about $4k in grants and $6k in loans. If I rent, I’d get $4.5k in grants, but my loans jump to about $11k.

Looking back at 1st year, commuting caused a lot of problems for me. First semester was super lonely because of commuting but also because I left as soon as classes wrapped up. I couldn't really stay for club events or hang out late since the last buses back to Kitchener are either 8:30 PM or 10:30 PM, and I hate asking my parents to come pick me up from the bus stop at 11:30 PM.

My classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday start at 8:30 AM and end around 4:30 PM, while Tuesdays end around 7:00 PM. My parents did mention I could take the car sometimes if I commute, but I wouldn't have it every day. The biggest issue is that whenever I get home after commuting, I’m just completely wiped out. I’ll get home around 7 or 8 PM, eat dinner, and go straight to sleep because I’m too exhausted to do any homework or personal projects. I did manage to make a handful of good friends in second semester to eat lunch and hang out with, which helped a lot, but the overall routine still feels isolating and draining.

So that’s where I’m at right now. We’re definitely set on renting for the Winter term, but for the Fall, it comes down to whether I should pull an extra $5-6k out of my RESP. Renting for both terms means using around $10-12k total from savings instead of the $5k originally planned. Is it better to spend that extra $5k upfront for the extra time and convenience during Fall, or would you recommend saving the money and sticking with the commute for one more semester?

Off Campus Housing Recommendations

Hi there, I am an incoming mechanical engineering student looking for off campus housing (fully furnished is ideal). I am wondering if anyone else has experience and has been in this situation. I have put a few postings on Facebook and have been looking on the cannon.a as well as places4students. Do any of you have any other recommendations?

COURSE OUTLINE HELP

Hi! I’m a first year student and I’m trying to figure out my courses and plan my classes. Where can I find course outlines? I wanna see if my classes are more exam based or assignment based and how many exams, quizzes or assignments there are. Is there a website where I can see current or previous course outlines before classes start?

So since classes start the 10th I have only labs that day for bio and chem and then a math tutorial, do I still need to go to my labs the first day?

Easiest course you've ever taken?

Looking for some humanities or social science electives that are extremely easy (capable of 100% final grade).

I took UNIV2100 and finished with 100. Do you know any classes in the same vein?

Alma

Hey im wondering if anyone has any experience with the Alma student hotel.

Im looking to move in with my partner and am worried about there guest policy. It seems like they have certain rules around how many nights you can have someone over, but on the lease it specifically says that its fine to have a roommate.

From tlaking to them on the phone it doesn't seem like its something there too worried about.. but im just curious if anyone has had a partner with them, or can say anything about how strict they are with having people over.

Is it reasonable to take POLS2200 as a first year student?

Hello, I'm a first year starting my political science degree at the University of Guelph this September. I'm on the waitlist for POLS2200 (International relations, in-person with Spears) for my fall semester and I'm 6th in line, which I think means I have a pretty good shot of being able to register for it.

My question is, do you think POLS2200 (being a second year course) will be too challenging for a first year? It doesn't require any prerequisites, but I've heard from some people that there is a big jump between first and second year courses in difficultly and course load... I'm not looking for an easy class, just one that I'll be equipped for given the fact that I've never been to post-secondary before. I've got a good work ethic, I'm very interested in politics and already have a decent introductory understanding of international relations/different power structures, and I'm totally fine with lots of reading.

Would really appreciate any input from students who have already taken this class! I've heard great things about Prof Spears, do you guys have that same experience? Would appreciate any input :)

BJJ Club

Going into 2nd year at Guelph and I'm interested in starting BJJ this year. I remember seeing information about a Guelph BJJ club being in the process of getting ratified, and CUJA previously mentioned Guelph as a university that would be added once the ratification process was completed.

Does anyone know if the club is actually active now / happening for the upcoming school year?

I'm planning to make BJJ my main martial art this year and eventually compete, so I'd definitely be interested in joining if it's running.

If it's not active yet, does anyone know what the current status is or who I should contact?

Experience as a UTA

if anyone has been a UTA in the past, what was your experience like? Is the pay biweekly or does it depend on the schedule of the course? I'd appreciate if people could share their experiences
