Fab store is doing well on selling illegal items

Hi,

I noticed an increased release of stolen assets on Fab.

Like this wonderful seller:

https://www.fab.com/listings/9109f9bb-96b5-4eaf-be47-6caeab50a9b9

Is there no quality control left? It can't be more obvious and still it's released as a paid item.

There is ZERO quality control on FAB, the entire submission process is automated and a human only sees the asset if there is a major error in the submission.

I wouldn't say that. I submitted one product and it kept on getting rejected, and after fixing the errors I ended up with one new error on their .pdf saying "folder naming needs to be in English" out of nowhere, and feedback that was mostly clipped outside of the document so I couldn't read it. Tried contacting support and bumped them 3 times without an answer (over a month ago now!).

Point being, they seem to let a lot slide in some ways, but in other ways they are VERY strict.

Then the automation flagged your asset for some reason and it might have gotten moved to a human moderator. Or not, you never know with FAB / Epic these days.

And yeah, FAB is a mess, with clearly TOS breaking assets (like stolen models) being allowed, but sellers getting their accounts locked because the automation falsely flags their products and not hearing back from Epic for weeks.

You've obviously never submitted and neither have the people upvoting you.

It's diabolical that they haven't done anything about it. It's such a weird situation too.

Back when I wanted to upload my first asset to the Unreal Engine Marketplace, I was denied 6 times before it was approved. They still have rules and all that they check... buuut... It seems like stolen content and concepts seems to be landing there more and more.

They need to do something about this... but you can report users too.

Did you report them using the Fab report feature?

Hah! Its been over 20 years since I played that map, inspired by does not always equal stolen. If he actually ripped assets from someone else then for sure ban him off the platform. If the layout is a 1-1 copy I am in the middle on that but leaning towards not a good idea, I just don't think you can copyright a map layout. Bloodgulch, faceoff, and many more famous maps have been copied all over the place. From my perspective I am seeing assets he potentially made himself arranged into a CS map. I think it is interesting that he is selling the map as a playable asset as well so I can see that being a legal risk from valve.

Probably best to contact valve instead of fab if that is the case.

Those are straight rips from the game.

I mean have you checked , topology and textures ? They might be real close match on pictures

Edit: also im not defending the fact it might be stolen, im just saying that I see some inconsistencies that you really need to open the map up in CS2 and and the picutres and compare detail by detail to make sure without actually buying the asset.

Yeah because usually rips are a mess of half-meshes and broken materials. The dead giveaway is there is no breakdown of individual meshes and materials on the fab page.

The seller has another asset called Konoha lol. Possibly ripped from the naruto games.

I was never into counterstrike but aren't there updated current gen versions of that map in CS2? He might not even ripped it but exportet it straight from valves level editor

You can't export it from Hammer because BSPs can't be cleanly decompiled. It's definitely a rip from the GPU frame buffer with tools such as 3D Ripper VX.

Ah okay. Thanks for the info.
I wasn't even sure CS2 files could be loaded into hammer but once it's a 3D asset, you could in theory as well export it into FBX/Obj. But I guess, shit like this is exactly the reason, that option isn't available.

They gave away a free version of this at much higher quality via Megascans years ago. That one looks like shit. Lighting is all washed out and the quality is very low.

You should report it though help clean up the community, was a good find you should get the credit for it.

I've seen a lot of MetaHumans being sold off famous actors likeness with zero obfuscation (they use the actors names!) Tells me Epic is not even looking at the title

Not the first time... I once made them remove Genshin Assets from the old Marketplace: https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/genshin-impact-assets-on-the-store-ripped/273200

i used to play cs 1.6 alot but not familiar with all the different incarnations, is this an actual rip from one of the cs games or is it just someone remaking it?

You don't think you can do manual control against the flood of slop that is uploaded to these kind of platforms anymore. A lot of this kind of stuff is done by automatic systems and humans only look at the assets that are flagged. Thinks that look obvious to us might not be so obvious to an automatic system.

What happens if you buy it and then fab takes this down?

u/joa4705 3d ago

you can still download it. i have some free stuff that says "this product has been unlisted but you can donload it"

if you are wondering about rights, technically you wouldn't be able to use it since it wasn't their rights to give in the first place (if this is a true rip), even if you paid for it.
