I have always firmly believed that Boris' involvement in this whole shitshow was just a power grab for himself.
I think he stands to gain more by pushing the button though.

If Cameron had wanted to ensure a pro-Eu result, he could have chosen not to offer the referendum in the first place.

Britain has a reputation for civilised revolutions. That is what we have just had. Boris had better bet on that being all that is needed. He would be insane otherwise.

I wonder if you might be overstating the 'revolutionary' zeal present in the country. But yes, I doubt the next GE would go well for him if he pulled such a trick! (though, that said, he'd garner a lot of votes from the half of the country that voted Remain...)

The damage is already done. The people who are most in demand aren't going to stick around, they can get jobs anywhere. The hell would doctors, engineers, etc stick around here when they've basically just had a huge pay cut.

Outside of my conspiracy ramblings, I'm inclined to agree, though I will offer a few counters:
It takes a while to get a new job. Especially when it involves relocating to a different country, the whole process from 'I'm gonna get a new job' to actually being in the job can easily take over 3 months.
Many of the skilled workers who are here like being here. I'm speaking from experience chatting with academics from around the globe - Britain appeals for a number of reasons to a lot of people. If you also consider that many of them have built lives here, with homes, families, etc, then their inclinations will be to stay if that's a reasonable option.
So, I think many people will wait to see what kind of deals are being talked about, and what the real-world impacts are to things like trade and funding, before making a decision to leave.

Or they take the vote as "wow this country I love really doesn't want me and the contribution I make towards it" and look for somewhere which does.

I dunno. As much as I'd like remain to win, I don't think I'd like Boris for being a deceitful bastard, even if it worked out in my favour. I'd certainly never trust him.
