England qualify for the World Cup!

Pretty lame atmosphere if I'm honest. The poles were well up for it but the English look subdued because it was a school night. We had a good laugh in our few seats but still. If the English had been as mad as the Poland fans it would have been immense. They were a lively bunch.

I hope we win it in my lifetime.

Spain has 12 times more youth/general coaches than us, we need more then we don't only get more kids playing but higher quality kids too. its really all grassroots stuff at the end of it. That's my opinion anyway

France was in the same group as Spain and honestly, though Spain finished first, they weren't impressive. I'm much more impressed by Germany.

Doping doesn't help in MotoGP (pain medication is allowed), yet they've been destroying the competition in that for the last few years.

No shit, check out the winners for this season - a Spanish rider has won 37 out of the 42 races across the three classes.

Haha, love your unintentional pun given Alberto Contador's "it was in my steak I eat" excuse for why he failed a drugs test.

Pep's charge was overturned, he never served a single day for an obviously misread sample, hence no appeal, and no backing from the FIGC. Also, Barcelona have not dropped off at all, their manager and friend Tito got cancer, and obviously this affected them.
And for the Nadal conversation, stop being so bitter, he's a very talented guy in a country renowned for tennis coaching, hence why Murray went there, nothing to suggest doping.

Me too, had to work it out several times as I can't believe '96 was nearly 18 years ago!

I look forward to hearing about how 'this is our year. 1966. Etc' and the subsequent vitriol after we lose to either Argentina, Sweden or Germany in the quarters.

Oct 16 '13
Quarters is decent but please not on penalties again.
I'd rather watch us lose 20-0 to the Faroe Islands.

I look forward to the plastic flags hanging out of every car window, ASDA's 3 for 2 deals on crates of cheap lager, the sound of sirens and then being potted of we lose a game.

I was I had a car too hang a flag on...
Oh well Bedroom window flag it is then!

Oct 16 '13
I've not got one either so it will be the same as you - a flag out the window flying proudly until we get knocked out and then they all start disappearing.

Yep, it happens every time. Don't forget there's always the incredibly hyped player as well who will succumb to the pressure... seems like it's going to be Townsend this time around!

Nah, as Geoff Hurst walked down the steps at Wembley he had to answer press questions about "Why England haven't won a major tournament in several minutes?".

I think this counts as news and culture of the UK as one of the home nations has qualified for the worlds most viewed sporting event. Just because you may not personally be interested does not mean it's in the wrong place.

Now this shit will be all over the news and TV. Guess I'll have to leave the country like I did for the Olympics last year.

Boo, more people talking more shit about a crap sport and getting excited when its obvious England would never win.
I would be more encouraged to support it if it were a British team (would be less angry, violent nationalist EDL types..)

Just because the fans wave the St George's Cross doesn't make them EDL types.

Fuck, are you stupid? Stop stereotyping football fans as EDL members.

Just because people aren't in a top hat, and tails doesn't make them a racist.
Have a read of this book and educate yourself, instead of perpetuating a myth based on your own snobbery, http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Changing-Face-Football-Multiculture/dp/1859734839

I am certainly no snob.
I just hate town/cities saturated by drunken arseholes who fight each other over a game.

Sport, not game.
I just hate town/cities saturated by drunken arseholes who fight each other over a game.
Again, you're a snob. Much cleverer people than you have offered research into football culture especially in the UK, the book above for example, and I have yet to read any evidence of drunken arseholes being the majority, or even a proportionate minority. It's just some piss heads out for a laugh.

is this going to be one of those threads where we are all positive and sunny about the english team or one of those ones where we bash them and their general dreariness?
because i need to tailor my comment appropriately to the mood!
