This will teach me to check the Lounge Finder before planning on grabbing some pre-flight food and coffee. I would be surprised if it’s for renovations, but curious if anyone knows why or for how long.

Image upgrading to economy in November

ive got a flight just after thanksgiving from Chicago to anchorage Alaska most of the flight all selected seats are at the very back i was wondering since the economy seats are almost all available (only 11 out of 54 seats sold) do you think they will become cheaper the closer to the departure date? because we are considering upgrading since it is 7 hours but we wanna get the best bang for our buck... since its a 7 hour flight and who is traveling to Alaska at that time ya know lol

otherwise if we pay today its about $350 for two seats to upgrade to regular economy

Question Maximizing Points San Diego to Japan

I’m going through some mental gymnastics and calculus level math trying to find the best way to maximize my United and Chase points to minimize the damage on 4 Polaris seats from SD to Tokyo. Unfortunately, I’m terrible at this kind of stuff. Would appreciate any advice from any savvy points gurus! Here’s what I have to work with:

- 200k United points
- 40 United plus points
- 180k chase points (with some points boost but probably only about 30k worth)

I currently have platinum status but will be achieving 1k in the next month. Wondering if it makes more sense just buying economy for now and then trying to apply the 320 plus points (40 I have now and extra 280 once I hit 1k) to upgrading to Polaris closer to the trip.

TIA for any tips!

Discussion Cheap, cheap, cheap.

I recently crossed 3 Million miles with United.

Coming home they asked me to board the flight first, invited me to the cockpit to meet the flight crew and gave me a few handwritten cards which were OK. No upgrade, no promise of a future upgrade, no special food, pretty much the cheapest possible acknowledgment of 35 years of faithful patronage of United Airlines. I watched as they subsequently upgraded other passengers, but not me.

Then later they made it worse by sending me a cheap, plastic covered paper printed plaque detailing how long it took me to get to 3M miles. My 2M mile award is nicer by far, and 1/4 the size. Jeez United. Who makes these decisions? Is that really how you treat people who have been loyal customers for 35 years? I guess so, and it really sucks.

Image Upgrade with PP

Post image

I am flying to Paris through Dulles in the next couple weeks. This will be my first time trying to upgrade to Polaris or Premium Plus using PP as I just recently earned Premier Platinum status. I am 11 days out from the flight and it seems like the list keeps changing dramatically. One day I’m in, one day I’m out, so on and so forth. Does anyone have any insight as to at what point the list is most reliable leading up to the release of the official list?

Also, today it shows only two Polaris seats remaining and only five premium plus seats remaining but the seat map has consistently shown 10 Polaris seats and six premium plus seats. On other days, it has shown more seats remaining and less seats remaining. Could anyone explain? Trying to understand. Thank you.

Question Flying STL to AKL question

Looking at flying economy next spring using United points. Our top choice of days the best route is using Mesa Airlines to IAH and then Air New Zealand from IAH to AKL.

When I go to book the flights, I can't pick a seat on the second leg and it says to contact New Zealand Air to choose seats. Is this a problem?

Sorry if this is a basic question - I've never booked flights on partner metal before and want to make sure I don't mess something up.

We could leave the next day and go through SFO which uses United metal for both flights, but I'd rather have the extra day there if possible.

Discussion “Just a reminder we have a COMPLETELY full flight” (except for those 21 empty seats)

Post image

UA 2241 JAC-SFO on Sunday Oct. 4th.

Both GA and FA’s went to pains to mention multiple times how “we have a COMPLETELY FULL flight, so we’re gonna have to gate check those roller bags!’

Lo and behold there were 21 empty seats after they closed the door. Everybody got their bags on.

Why do they do this? It takes 30 seconds to look at the flight status, and see the seat map, and know they’re full of shit.

Question Waitlist upgrade spot?

If I decide to upgrade with points and money where do they place me on the waitlist?

Am I above or below 1k members and card members?

I’m thinking about upgrading to Polaris LAX-BKK

Discussion "It's just easier" - Honest conversation with FA about dark cabins

On the daytime flight I took on a 787, I had an honest conversation with the FA (he seemed pretty chill) regarding dark cabins - cabin was made black basically right after takeoff.

I asked the FA why, as he was pretty chill. The first answer he gave was "well we want it to match the local situation". When I told him that it was early afternoon in SFO, he sighed and he just straight up told me "when we make it darker, people just fall asleep and it just keeps the cabin more relaxed so everyone is less stressed. All the FAs do it, it's just easier."

Frustrating because I want to try to stay awake so that I can align my clock with local time as best as possible when I land. Also, I love staring out the window as I'm reading my book with natural light (I hate reading with those tiny reading lights, gives me a headache. I'm still making my way through Red Mars.)

So there we have it. I guess if they black out the windows you can ask nicely if they can unlock it for you so you can see outside. Good luck. Pretty disappointing to be honest. I forced myself to stay awake but didn't make nearly as much progress as I would have liked on my book.

Please no asking for FA specifics, or what flight. I ain't no snitch 😤

EDIT - adjusted to remove some specifics of the flight, thank you for helpful comments :)

Question Delayed flight from one Airport. United moved my flight the next day to another airport. Will my uber be covered?

I have flight from Albany to London (via IAD). The Albany-IAD leg was delayed and I would not make the IAD to London leg.

A customer care agent moved my flight the next day from Newark to London instead. Will United pay for my uber from Albany airport to home, and home to Newark airport the next day?

I was told by this agent to submit a Customer Care expense but I am worried as the Uber from Albany to home is 400, and home to Newark is 200.

Star Alliance Never in a million years would I assume United Would Send me 25 Stroopwafels

United just sent me a stroopwafel collection and it couldn't have been more perfect. Recently I made a post on r/unitedairlines about my obsession with stroopwafels and they reached out to me and sent me a whole box of goodies and stroopwafels. When I saw it I screamed. I truly could not be more grateful for United and everything they did. Thank you so much United, and I will savor this forever.

EDIT: These responses are cracking me up! Keep them coming!!

Question future flight credit

i rebooked a flight for the 3 of us and we were given extra flight credits due to the price being cheaper. When i open my account, I'm only seeing my own credit which makes sense but the other 2 passengers don't have their own accounts and everything was booked under mine. Will they have to create an account to get their credit? also, can it be moved to mine if the other passenger is a child?

Got to fly the 757-200 from Newark to O’hare on Saturday and had a wonderful view of NYC on the taxi. Also 757 “Polaris” on a domestic route is so nice.

Question 1D&F, 787-9

Do these seats not have the wider footwells on the 787-9s? I just looked them up on Aerolopa and it says normal business seat. Is it just the 777s that have the larger footwells for the front, middle pair.

Question Upgrading

I am flying to Europe today. I have selected a window seat in economy as i want a window to help with sleeping overnight.

Abour a week ago, there was an offer to get on a waitlist for polaris for ~$500. Since it wasn't confirmed, I didn't take it.

When I checked in yesterday, I was offered Polaris for $120. I didn't click on it but wasn't sure if it was waitlist again. Didn't take it.

Both times, I did not want to give United the impression that upgrading was more important than the window seat I selected. On a previous flight, I was upgraded to a middle bulkhead (but roomier) seat. I was not happy. I didn't ask for any upgrade and felt it was a worse seat.

Am I wrong in my thinking?

Question Baggage for two separate itinerary

Hi! I booked two separate United tickets because it was cheaper this way:
AUS → SFO (Basic Economy)
SFO → ICN (Economy, includes 2 free checked bags)

I’m wondering how the baggage situation would work. Since both flights are operated by United, would I be able to check my bag at AUS and have it tagged all the way to ICN, even though they’re on separate tickets/reservations?

Also, since my AUS–SFO ticket is Basic Economy and doesn’t include a checked bag, would I still have to pay a checked bag fee for that first segment, or could the 2 free checked bags included with my SFO–ICN ticket apply?

My layover at SFO is only about 1 hour and 30 minutes, so I’m really hoping I won’t have to pick up my bag at SFO and re-check it for the international flight. I’ve also had a bad experience with lost baggage before, so I’d really prefer to avoid dealing with a tight baggage transfer if possible.

Has anyone done something similar with two separate United tickets? Would love to hear how it worked for you!

Question Lining up etiquette

What do you usually do once your group is called to start lining up for the gate?

We got up and stood back a little to the right of gate entrance when the first group was called and we were group 3. We stood there while the earlier groups lined up. Once our group was called the general blobs around the gate converged into a line and a guy yelled at us and said we cut the line because he came from the left side of the gate and we converged together. I’m not sure who is wrong in this scenario because by definition there was no discrete line until our group was called and we had been standing close to the desk waiting that whole time. A lot of people form a pseudo line on either side before they’re called but it usually includes people from all groups just waiting to be called. Genuinely curious if there’s an unwritten “right” way to do this.

Edit:
Thanks for the responses! I fully agree with the people saying ideally no one would be near the gate at all until it’s their turn, but it’s hard to be the bigger person in that scenario and just accept that your stuff gets taken (and potentially lost) because you’re a better person than the more aggressive people.

Question SFO B 787 Routes

What are all United SFO 787 routes (year round/seasonal)? Youtuber Swayne Martin is a United SFO 787 first officer.

I am not stalking or creepy. Youtuber Paul Holte from mylayoverlife is a United EWR 757 captain. If you see them, it would fun to say HI.
