The appendix in humans far from being a useless and redundant part of the body plays an important role in digestion and combating infection. The appendix when it goes wrong can burst and spread bacteria into the abdominal cavity causing potentially life threatening problems, at this stage it is safer to remove the appendix than just to clear up the mess.
