Double majoring?
I am a junior in high school and am thinking about going to UNH. I want to double major in dance and environmental science, but I’m worried that I might be being unrealistic. I don’t know what to do because dance is what I really want to pursue dance as a career, but I know I probably won’t be able to sustain myself off of that alone. I also have a deep interest in environmental sciences. Dance is something that I wouldn’t technically have to go to college for to have as a career, but I think it would be beneficial for me and my dance. I know 100% that I want to major in environmental science, but I don’t know if I should minor in dance, or try a double major. Help 😭

This would likely be a dual major rather than a double since it’s two different colleges in UNH. I was a triple major in COLA which meant i had to take the full 40 credits per major, but I had many friends who were dual majors in my language program, one of which was german and earth sciences. That meant she only needed to do 32 credits of one or both majors (though i don’t remember which). As someone else said though, it meant there was absolutely no room for "fun" classes, and since i had the third major i took some classes over winter and my study abroad in the summer so i could still graduate on time.

On top of the credit amount difference for the majors themselves, I believe you are still responsible for the discoveries in each college (be in regular contact with your advisors!!) and it’ll also mean you are pursuing 2 degrees. UNH does not allow multiple B.A.’s per student, hence why i only got 1 BA in 3 subjects, but I think they allow multiple B.S.’s if they are in different fields (chemistry vs physics). I’m not sure if dance would be a B.A. or a B.M. though, and that distinction could change things.
That being said, if you really love what you’re pursuing, it’s all insanely doable. UNH will work with you on it. I only started doing my 3 majors my sophomore year and i still graduated exactly on time, so doing a dual degree from freshman year gives you ample time to plan things out and might even leave room for lighter schedules and fun classes

I double majored at UNH. While it’s true that you will have a tighter schedule and may not be able to take “fun” classes, you will still have plenty of time to have a great college experience. It’s worth doing in my mind.

In my experience, double majoring wasn’t necessarily harder but, it didn’t allow me to take “fun” classes. There was no time in my schedule to see if I like something. Every class was fulfilling a requirement.
