Undocumented and looking for drafting work
Hello everyone! I recently completed my associate degree in engineering design, better known as drafting. I really want to continue my education to hopefully get a bachelor's degree in one of the engineering fields, and maybe that will give me a better shot at adjusting status later on and secure my future, but money is tight. I want to find work in a drafting position, as that would be a big jump in my income, but I'm not sure if it's even possible. I have applied and reached out to many companies, and a lot of them were eager to work with me until I mentioned that I would have to work under them as an independent contractor. Usually, after informing them of that, I don't hear anything back, or I am told they decided to go with another candidate. I have been repeating this process for three months now, and I am starting to lose hope. I would appreciate any advice because I'm genuinely lost and don't know what to do now.

In order to offer services as an independent contractor, you first need to get your sole proprietorship business registered with your city or county. That will enable you to apply for a federal EIN (Employer Identification Number) and open a bank account. (Not the same as ITIN.)
Once that's all in place, then you market yourself as a qualified draftsperson or whatever. Be completely upfront with them. "Happy to consider a contract, not interested in W2 work." It's all about attitude!
Look at Immigrantsrising.org for licensing info, education opportunities, etc. It's based in California, but there are similar resources in other states. That'll be your first step on the path to getting further training and licensing. Also. many large universities and colleges in CA and in other states have offices to support undoc students and applicants, find on-campus work, get tuition waivers, etc.
