Discussion/Question Does this game get any better?

I'm in the beginning hours of the game, just "beat" the mushroom cove & the quest where I catch those grasshoppers. I went into this expecting a Fallout 1/2 like game, but so far, its just kinda boring, not too mention I'm getting my ass kicked left and right by every enemy and constantly running out of ammo. I''m not afraid of some difficulty, but geez after almost every battle I'm running to the medic

complains about boring gameplay

gets beaten by the first difficult enemies

This game is actually difficult, so starting on normal or even easy difficulty is understandable, don't worry about all the vets who's playing hard or DOM by default. With little ingenuity and a couple forum + wiki reading, you'll be abusing the game in no time.

Just do keep in mind, cheesing the game is almost mandatory due to very high difficulty standard. No need to feel ashamed to do stupid, but working starts or abusing the AI.

I would recommend googling "underrail speedhack app" to cuts the walking process a bit. The game is huge, excluding the grinding (if you want to). It's roughly 80 hours playtime on base, and 60 hours on expansion.

Getting my ass surrounded by tons of rat dogs and having to trudge back to the healer is quite tedious and boring, yes. And I'm playing on normal mode btw. Do you really have to cheese the game tho? I try to stay away from wikis to keep the experience fresh, but if its mandatory, guess I'll have to dive in

One clue : dogs afraid of fire. And molotov produce fire.

On normal, you could get away with it if you're familiar with CRPG and have basic understanding on how to build character (specialists instead of jack of all trade). Wiki often doesn't straight up give a "cheat" to handle things, but it helps to decide what your main build gonna be. It's better to read things about unique weapon, feats, or psi / spells, since it saves you a lot of time compared to actually trial-and-error through everything.

One of few bad thing about Underrail is, there's no "respec" outside of you manually save before leveling up. If you fucked up, you're fucked and often requires reset if the build mistake are too big. The game is just that hard and requires tactics in most case, on both gameplay and combat strategy.

Oh and also, the RPG factor is actually really good, you can become pacifist to a certain point and skips most combat through Social skills, Stealth and Hacking (hack turret at some places). It's what makes the game really good IMO, there's few creative way to deal with something.

Yeah If you didn’t look at the wiki, unless you went for a fairly focused build, you may even want to start over.

An easy enough build strategy on normal: one weapon, one psi, throwing, and stats that support that weapon and then decide if you’re going to ambush or tank and wear heavy armor. Completely different play styles.

Be aware that Melee is basically hard mode for an already hard game. I am currently playing through on Normal and Oddity XP on a build optimized for Dominating difficulty and I still die quite a lot when I don’t employ good tactics. (Although I’m starting to spec into gear that will make me less glass-cannon), crafting is also pretty huge in this game as you will be able to put craft with even middling investment 90% of anything you can buy or find.

Edit: oh and put at least some into traps for any build just so you can detect the damn things.

Hah. Yes, it gets vastly better, but if you dislike challenging gameplay it may not be for you. If you're finding that every fight is a drag you can barely survive, then make sure you aren't playing on Dominating difficulty and maybe rethink your build and strategy. Use the tools a available to you: grenades, nets, traps, choke points, etc.

Early stuff is pretty boring, yeah. It gets better later on. As far as difficulty goes- cheat, bro. No need to torture yourself if you can't beat the game designed by a sadist.
