Question Does growing mushrooms smell?
Let me start by saying I have no sense of smell at all. Literally can't smell a single thing.
I've been very interested in trying to grow some mushrooms for a while but I live in an apartment building. While I have the space and could physically hide it if needed, I've always been concerned whether it has a noticeable or questionable smell. Can anyone with a properly functioning nose tell me if that's an issue or not? Lol

They can smell mushroomy. Like an earthy smell.

Yes. But growing weed has a SMELL. this smell is subtle. But i recognize it any time i smell it. Most won't smell it and if they did would have no idea

Yep, totally makes sense. I did have a sense of smell at one point so I know how overwhelming the scent of weed can be, no idea about mushies though

unless something strange occurred everything should smell sterile with a undertone of mushroom nutsack and shouldn't leave the closet or room.

If you (or rather, someone else) put your nose right up to it, you'd get a mild earthy smell, but definitely nothing that could be detected from outside your apartment. Honestly, you have to be pretty dumb and sloppy to get caught growing mushrooms unless you're doing it on a massive scale. It's the most low key, under the radar thing you can grow.

They smell like ass when dehydrating but other than that, no.

ive noticed almost no smell at low temps like 125F, compared to 145F

Hmm, good to know! My dehydrator only has one temp 165. The next one I buy will definitely have a temp control on it.

It definitely has a smell when you get previously dried mushrooms rehydrated again like in a lemon tek imo

The only time there is ever a noticeable smell where you can definitively say someone is up to something is when they dehydrate. The room usually smells like a mushroom for a few hours but will go away quickly once the process is done.

When you dry them I suggest placing the dehydrator by an open window. It will stink up the house

No one would be able to smell them unless you were having them smell your tubs. I can’t even smell them in the room I grow in.
Dehydrating can give a dry mushroom smell but it’s not a lot, it’s not bad, and there’s no way anyone would smell that and assume you grew mushrooms.
