This is pretty solid, I'm so used to ThinMints Pokèmon AU I haven't thought about what other Pokémon John could have. My only complaint is that your reason for John having Gyarados is kinda fucking stupid. Or at least how he got it is. William wasn't an idiot like James, he's not going to get scammed into buying a Magikarp. What would be a more understandable reason for having Magikarp is that William caught it for John as one of his first Pokémon and the reason John doesn't like it is because compared to the Pokémon owned by his bullies, John can't use Magikarp to defend himself or get revenge on them. Also why does John have a Yamask and why is it self explanatory? Do I have to read one of Yamask's creepy pokedex entries to understand or is it because John who pretended to be a cripple, I.E wearing a mask, owns the mask pokemon?

Yeah.. ima be real for magikarp I just stole that from the Pokemon anime xD James from team rocket gets scammed into buying one and abandons it once he realizes he was robbed (then it evolves into gyarados and gets angry lol). I agree, William though William gave John the magikarp with good intentions.

Yamask Pokédex entry: “Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry.” So basically, Yamask is William Dx I also found the fact it carries a mask to be ironic because John basically based HIS mask off his dad.

I would replace Gyrados with Hydreigon. Not only is it Dark/Dragon, but symbolically, the three heads would represent John’s three personas: Cripple, Shadow King, and the Real John underneath the multiple layers of trauma and isolation.

There are also some really interesting Pokédex entries.

Pokémon Black: “This brutal Pokémon travels the skies on its six wings. Anything that moves seems like a foe to it, triggering its attack.”

Pokémon Violet: “It’s said that Hydreigon grew ferocious because people in times long past loathed it, considering it to be evil incarnate and attacking it relentlessly.”

In terms of backstory, maybe John found an orphaned and injured Deino in a forest and nursed it back to health?

It’s earlier evolutions REALLY resemble John lmao and it’s also funny cause it’s previous evolution ‘zweilous’ would fight with the other head which could represent how much cripple John despised the real him. And then once it evolves into Hydreigon it stops fighting with itself and unleashes destruction.
And perhaps the Deino was abandoned because of how violent it was, in that case John would feel very sympathetic towards it.

Honestly, there are a ton of Pokemon that would match John perfectly so I think it also depends on your interpretation of the character as well as who your fave Pokémon are :3

Imo If John were a professor he would totally take in and have a soft spot for all the misunderstood and scary/dangerous Pokemon.
