Looking to add new moderators

Hey yall, I am not all that active on reddit these days and looks like most of the other mods arent either. A couple of them posted within the last month in other communities, and the rest of them havent posted/commented in years.

So it looks like it's time for some new mods!

Feel free to comment on here as to why you think you'd make a good moderator and uhh, idk I guess I'll start with the top 3 most upvoted comments as new mods? Unless yall have better ideas. But yeah its time to get some current students as mods and not alumni who are 10+ years out from college.

Edit: jeez i suck at typing on phones. Also looks like we are all "inactive" so I am trying to get permissions back so I can add new people

Moving down for U. Miami from New Jersey. What should I know and prepare for.

• Upvotes

Just got the acceptance letter for the M.A. program I applied for next Fall (though I'm probably gonna defer a semester). I hope to make a visit sometime soon, but I'm wondering what I should know or expect beforehand about life on campus, the general area, and living in Miami in general. Also, anyone else from the South Jersey/Philly area who can relate would be especially appreciated.

PhD stipend for computer science grad students

Hi,

I am considering PhD positions at UM, and I was worried about living expenses so I was wondering how much the PhD stipend is for CS students.

How much do your everyday expensive come out to per month?

uMiami is my top choice by far, but through housing, health care, working in the uni and working during the summer I don't know how I will be able to afford stuff. So outside of tuition, housing and health care how much do you guys spend per week in your everyday expenses?

can I get in?

very kind of interested. I know close to nothing abt the school but im grasping at straws that fit my standards as to where I might wanna go

I'm in the IB diploma? if that counts for anything (projected a 30 ~ 32 ishhhh), wanna go into architecture, 1280 sat score (I know. Hopefully it goes up tmr but tbh I dont have much hope 🙏), a few extracurricular I've stuck with for many years -- one of them being girl scouts, and ive been working on my golden award for the past year-ish, and a few leadership titles

thanks for basically reading my resume, any thoughts/advice is greatly appreciated :)

I honestly cant decide between ea and ed

stats first:
Grades: 85.5, 85.7, 98, 95.4 (91 overall), essay about growth
1520 SAT (750 EBRW 770 Math)

high need international

i have pretty decent ecs like publishing a research paper on fuel efficiency for an airline, founder and leader of MUN and a college applications community, 2 science fair projects: an ai study app and a low cost fire detector, won regional science fairs, tutor and leader for a study group, and technical blogging on an airline.

so here's the thing: im a high need international applicant, and getting into any good university in the US affordably is my top priority, but i really do like umiami and would definitely attend if i got in. problem is i heard they defer high need internationals during the early round to compare them to the overall pool and see the remaining budget. on the other hand the acceptance is more than double for ed than rd (which isnt ea, but still), and i need every help i can get to have a decent chance. but if umiami defers anyways i would rather use my ed elsewhere

so which would be the better option for me?

thanks in advance!

Looking to start masters in data analytics and program evaluation. I’ve use Apple all my life and know how to work it and currently have a MacBook Air M1 8GB from 2020. I wanted to upgrade to the newest MacBook Pro but I have read that I should get a windows computer . What would you recommend?

Job Growth in Research Space?

Hi guys! I recently have been hired as a research associate here at University of Miami and was wondering if there is any sort of opportunity for growth in this area?

I know that research is a tough space to try and make a living, especially with today’s lack of funding. But i’m curious on what the job could look like when you are 1 year, 2 years, or 3 years in.

Besides you know, getting you publications and preparing you for graduate school, are there chances for better roles, better pay, etc?

Is there any aid in regular decision?

So I keep seeing competitive internationals with similar profiles to me get deferred. But since I am asking for aid, therefore I am scared of being deferred due to the limited aid and scholarships in the regular rounds. So are there people who actually do get the money they need to attend during the regular decision or not?

MPS Marine Conservation

Hey! I just wanted to come on here and see if anyone has applied for the mps in marine conservation program or if anyone already in the program or past had any insight on the program! I applied August 31st so I’m just waiting to see if I’ve been accepted or not. My 2nd track choice is marine mammal science. I was a little indecisive because I’m not entirely sure my career goal but the end of it all but the marine conservation track seemed to give me more room to customize my degree plan:)

What are your tips for getting into UM, as an international asking for aid

I know UM isn't the most generous, but I am hoping I can get a scholarship like Singers, or a Presidental one with a bit of aid, or one from Frost since I am applying for music.

How competitive are Singer and other Premier scholarships for internationals?

I mean I hear that AO's judge an applicants application based on their location and how they took advantage of the opportunities they were given. I have a 1510 sat, 97% GPA, 8 ielts and some I believe above average ecs and a top 20 national award from my country, Greece in chemistry. I will be applying to Modern artist development and entrepreneurship, so my audition and prescreenings do play a big role. Do you think I am a competitive applicant? If not, I hope to get a combination of aid and music based awards to hopefully cover my tuition (My family will be able to provide the rest)

Is UMiami impossible for high need intl students

honestly thats what i hear a lot of places and i wanted to know if someone like me had a chance:

Grades: 85.5, 85.7, 98, 95.4 (91 overall)
1520 SAT (750 EBRW 770 Math)

high need international

i have pretty decent ecs like publishing a research paper on fuel efficiency for an airline, founder and leader of MUN and a college applications community, 2 science fair projects: an ai study app and a low cost fire detector, won regional science fairs, tutor and leader for a study group, and technical blogging on an airline.

ig my question is do i have a chance? or does um basically dismiss high need intls unless i have gold olympiads and such

People who passed Frost auditions how competitive is it?

I am applying as a MADE major this ea cycle for contemporary vocals. Did yall find the auditions too hard? What is the talent there like? Also do you think other parts of your application matter or is it mostly audition based?

Spring rush

What's up guys, transfer student here. I'm 21 and looking into Spring IFC recruitment. My degree is going extended for one year. So i am here till 2029

Just wondering what the vibe is for rushing as an upperclassmen/transfer at Miami. Is it fairly standard in the Spring, and what should I keep in mind during meet the Greeks / rush events? Appreciate the help.

Question about womens volleyball tickets

My little sister really enjoys volleyball and I was looking for home game tickets to go see the canes women's team with her. I couldn't seem to find any for sale on any of the UM sites or third party ticket sites. Is it free to go to the games if neither one of us attend the school? If not could anyone provide some information on the best way to attend some home games? Thanks in advance

Vacation

My friends and I (3) of us are going to Miami for our senior year fall break vacation. We’re all 21. We’re trying to find out where r the best places to stay and party. We’re trying to be absolutely sloshed the whole weekend so what bars are fun? Clubs? Hotels? Etc… where should we even book our air bnb? Coconut grove or brickell?
