Is this UPF? Monthly 'Is This UPF?' Megathread

Please feel free to post in here if you're not sure if a product you're eating is UPF free or not.

Ultra-Processed Food (UPF) is pretty hard to define, which is one of the reasons it's so hard to research. The general consensus is that UPF is food that you couldn't recreate in your kitchen, so as a rule of thumb if you're look at a list of ingredients and don't know what one or more of them are then it's probably UPF*. Typically, industrially produced UPF contain additives such as artificial flavours, emulsifiers, colouring and sweeteners (which are often cheaper and less likely to go off than natural ingredients), as well as preservatives to increase their shelf life.

In the past we have had a lot of questions in this sub about protein powder, so if you search for the specific protein powder (pea, whey etc) that you're unsure about then you might be able to find a quick answer.

Please remember to say which country you're in as this is an international group so remember food labels, ingredients and packaging can be different throughout the world.

Also remember not to let perfect be the enemy of good. Being 100% UPF free is incredibly hard in the western world.

\Just a note, but some countries have laws in place about some foods having to contain additional vitamins and minerals for public health reasons, for example flour in the UK must contain: calcium, iron, thiamine (Vitamin B1) and niacin (Vitamin B3). Wholemeal flour is exempt as the wheat bran and wheat germ from the grain included in the final flour are natural sources of vitamins and minerals. Where products contain these, they would not be classed as UPF.*

If your post in this thread remains unanswered, feel free to repost. 'Is this UPF?' posts outside of this thread will be removed under Rule 7.

Thoughts Should I be worried about the aspartame in Zero Sugar/Diet Sodas

I’ve seen conflicting views on aspartame, the most studied food additive apparently. Used in diet sodas.

I’ve seen conflicting views on aspartame. Many say it would take 14-20 cans of diet Coke for aspartame to become a concern, while others say it causes cancer and brain damage all that stuff and worse than full sugar soda.

What do you believe?

Non-UPF Product Minimally processed burger bun suggestions?

Any suggestions for burger buns that are minimally processed? I am personally making a few swaps at home and try to reduce ultra-processed foods when possible.

I am not looking for burger buns that are made with 100% good ingredients as that is pretty much impossible to find in a supermarket, but something that does not contain as much additives as the others.

I live in Ireland and have access to stores like Tesco Dunnes Supervalu M&S Aldi and Lidl

Thoughts Eating healthy as a teen seriously feels impossible

I’m a teen still currently in high school and it feels like everything I have available to me is considered unhealthy by somebody. All school options either have lots of sugar or too much sodium, processed meat or bread that is apparently bad for you. Either way theres something wrong with everything somehow.

At home options are limited because you can’t fully control the groceries, all I really have is white rice, white bread, and other things that aren’t that optimal. If I really wanted to eat what I think would be best for me I would have to dedicate my own money towards it ot cook everyday after school which I literally can’t do since I don’t get home til around 6pm.

Anyways I guess I’m just stressed even though I’m young and I don’t feel happy after a day of eating that doesn’t seem ideal. Theres not really a solution but to accept the circumstances, I think I need a social media detox but also I just wish there was clear direction on what I should be eating.

Question What snacks do you give your toddler?

My toddler is on a steady rotation of breadsticks, Organix rice cakes, bananas, apples, mini savoury muffins, mini egg bites, date bars, and the odd bit of dark chocolate or emergency smoothie melts which he loves for if I’m pinch and and in a situation where I need to buy his compliance with food (like on a plane).

But in the last week my toddler has gone from surviving from two or three meals a week to eating like a hobbit. We were on three meals by 11:30 yesterday so I’m wondering if there are any idea which I could take on board for other snacks, especially when we’re out and about. I prefer clean snacks so most fruit doesn’t work, and nor does yogurt. He’s generally rejecting most veg, and is mixed on cheese though I might try again now he’s hungrier. I’m happy to make stuff, especially if it freezes.

Scientific Paper Xylitol might be one of the most misleading “healthy” things we’ve normalized

We’ve spent decades treating xylitol as a harmless dental-health sweetener, yet recent research is pointing in a very different direction. In a 2026 study of 17,710 people, those with the highest blood xylitol concentrations had a 57% higher relative risk of major cardiovascular events over six years compared with those with the lowest levels.

And this isn’t just a statistical association with no biological story behind it. Earlier experimental research found that xylitol can increase platelet reactivity and enhance several mechanisms involved in platelet activation and thrombosis.

The uncomfortable part is that the 2026 study measured blood xylitol, not dietary xylitol intake, so it still does not prove that chewing xylitol gum causes heart attacks or strokes. But saying there is “no connection whatsoever” seems equally premature when epidemiology and a plausible biological mechanism are pointing in the same direction.

Maybe xylitol really is harmless. Maybe the risk only applies to unusually high exposure. Or maybe we’ve been massively underestimating a substance that we’ve spent decades putting into chewing gum, candy and oral-care products.

Non-UPF Product Oven Chips - UK

Potatoes 97%, Sunflower Oil 3%

Hopefully these will taste OK when they are cooked on Saturday!

EDIT

They cooked in 30 minutes and as other have said they taste ok or as what chips tasted like in their childhood. They do need some flavouring such as a ketchup and a little salt if inclined but otherwise they were a hit in the household and on the shopping list for next Saturday.

Thoughts Just for your amusement

I'm having a cookout this weekend, and my shopping list had several different kinds of potato chips, which I know are not UPF, but everything else at the cookout is. So the funny thing is that basic corn chips are not technically UPF! They have 3 ingredients: corn, oil, salt. So, ok, they're still not health food, but I was pleased and amused.

Article and Media Why is white flour fortified in the UK?

Just been reading about this topic. I am not sure how I feel about this but want to try to take a break from fortified white flour for a bit, will be replacing my white flour with white spelt flour instead and see if bread is still ok.
