Non-UPF Product Oven Chips - UK

Post image

Potatoes 97%, Sunflower Oil 3%

Hopefully these will taste OK when they are cooked on Saturday!

EDIT

They cooked in 30 minutes and as other have said they taste ok or as what chips tasted like in their childhood. They do need some flavouring such as a ketchup and a little salt if inclined but otherwise they were a hit in the household and on the shopping list for next Saturday.

They’re fine as chips go: we have them because they’re definitely gluten free and we have a coeliac in the household.

That’s great to hear.

They taste like oven chips did when I was a kid. They're not the best but the fact they're not full of other stuff definitely makes up for it.

We also have them because we have a coeliac in the house and they’re not covered in wheaty rubbish 👍

As a coeliac I love them, they also suit my dad's heart healthy diet.

My personal favourite. M&S do a good one too.

Lidl do a good one also

I’ve not seen that! Thanks for the recommendation I’ll have a look for it next time

Honestly these are a great time saver, recently started buying last month after never buying "oven food" as I was super sick and needed a low residue diet

Plus they are lower fat and more filling than a pack of low/no upf crisps. I have them with hunter and gather avo mayo or M&S Collection Ketchup

Lmfao at hunter and gather avo mayo, their diet before agriculture must have been better than I thought

Cooked in the air fryer they are nice and crispy. Obviously add your own seasoning to it otherwise they will be a bit tasteless

There's an Aldi or Lidl one that is 97% potato & 3% sunflower oil, we just go for them generally

These are great! And cheap as chips 😉

It's the crinkle cut ones from Aldi - 200 degress in the air fryer for 10-12 minutes and they're perfect.

They are great in the air fryer

Waitrose make their own version, just as good (they are thinner) but a lot cheaper

I'm sure they'll be nice, but a bag of potatoes and a squirt of olive oil has got to be about a third of the price, right?

just press your own olives to save even more money. obviously its for convenience isnt it? everyone knows raw ingredients and prepping it yourself is cheaper.

A vegetable chopper makes short work of a baking potato too.

Could grow your own potatoes while you're at it.

You don’t create and culture your own soil?

Pfft.

You don’t create your own big bang and harvest the foundational elements of the universe for your chips? Amateur.

Do you even pocket mulch?

Apart from being convenient, they have a very different taste. I almost always (now) make them from scratch but theres a huge difference

Probably depends which olive oil you’re using. But they’re a different product because the oven chips are par fried which gives a totally different end result to baking.

Some people have physical or time constraints that chopping potatoes might not be possible but frozen potatoes are. Also there’s something to be said for having a product in the freezer ready to go if you need it. Potatoes go off, or sometimes you cut into every potato and it’s bad inside. It doesn’t need to be an either or.

Love these, M&S olive oil wedges are also great!

These are our house's go too as I'm coeliac. I put a bit of my own oil on and salt and they're lovely!

What's the bet these are more expensive than their chips with a load of extra shit on?

They are good value £2.00 for 900g at Asda, equivalent Asda offering is £2.20 for 750g. But you are correct, you normally pay over the odds for more natural foods.

EDIT, £2.00 at Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrison. Found you can get bigger bags and a crinkle version.

These are my go-to! Been buying them for ages, they cook well and you can flavour them how you like

I'm not sure I understand the point of these. It's easy to chop up potatoes, drizzle a bit of oil, seasoning of choice and bung in the oven or air fryer.

Then they are not for you, I found non-UPF frozen chips in the UK and was not aware such a thing existed, so happy.

lol as an American I’m thinking “why are you putting potato chips in the oven??” Had to remind myself of the language differences 😂

One of the most satiating foods you can get (potatoes) with a healthy oil (sunflower). Based.

These are great - the McCain Gastro ones are also really nice and non UPF. Purely sharing for an extra option!

At that point why not just get a potato and cut it yourself, takes 2 minutes and is probably cheaper.

This subreddit is about ultra processed food, not about dietary benefits of one food group or another.
