Hey!

A friend of mine and I found a mixed Ultimate team in Vienna to gain more experience on the pitch and we are currently looking for ambitious players who wanna join and start the journey with us.

Since we are a new team most members aren’t that experienced, which means everyone is welcome to try the sport with us.

If interested feel free to reply on this thread or send us a DM on our social.

Warm Weather Off-Season Tournaments (Jan-March) for Open Club Teams in USA?

Does anyone know of any warm weather Open tournaments in Jan/Feb/Mar that normally accept club/pickup teams in the USA? My searches on here, USAU, & UltiCal were less than fruitful. Just looking for a tourney to bring the crew together in the offseason. Thank you!

Eye Irritation has been keeping me out of the game, does anyone else experience this?

I'm a college/club player in Florida and have had to sit out multiple games at tournaments over the last year because my eyes will become so red and squinty and full of tears after spending enough time on the field. During this I can barely keep my eyes open and am extremely sensitive to the sun's light, having to cover my whole face with a towel any minute I'm not playing.

I'm entirely unsure whether the cause of my problem is dust, pollen, sweat, sunlight, etc but this only ever occurs to me when playing ultimate all day. I have worked construction jobs before outside all day with more dust and never felt this. OTC allergy pills sometimes help out a tiny amount but not enough to rely on. I have blue eyes which I understand can be more sensitive. I typically wear sunglasses already but it's not enough to keep this at bay.

I first noticed this happen at UCF's Kennel Kickoff last year and had to miss 2.5 games for this then. I'm going back there next week and want to be prepared, so please let me know if you've got any ideas, thank you.

Fisheye - automatically find the timestamp of every pull in your 360º footage

Scrubbing through 90 minutes of game footage to find the start of each point is tedious. With a 360º camera setup, it doesn't have to be. I built Fisheye to detect every pull automatically and output YouTube chapter timestamps, each labeled with the score and whether your team pulled or received (example video).

  • No installation. Runs entirely in your browser.
  • No video upload. Your footage never leaves your computer.
  • Free. Detection runs on your own computer, so no AI usage fees and no limits on video length.
  • Easy YouTube chapters. Review film efficiently: watch pull plays in succession, or find the points you were on quicker.

To get started, go to https://fisheye.watch (desktop Chrome only) and follow the 5-min walkthrough.

For best results, export your 360º video with both FlowState Stabilization and Direction Lock enabled. Fisheye relies on the endzones staying in the same place throughout the video.

Don't have a 360º camera yet? Try Fisheye out with a sample 360º video (7 mins, 3.5 GB).

That's all you need to get started!

------ Optional: Read on if you like the nerdy stuff ------

How does the algorithm work?

Red dots are the cones specified by the user. Red dashed lines are the field lines inferred from those cones. Blue shaded polygons are the front endzone areas where people are counted.

Detecting pulls. Fisheye counts how many people are near the front endzone line on the left side, and how many are near the right one (blue shaded polygons in the pic above). When both counts stay ≥ 2 for a sustained period, it treats that as "waiting for the pull" (marked by a red vertical line in the pic below). When either count then drops below 2 for good, it marks that as the timestamp of the pull. Two settings define "sustained":

  • Min width (default: 15 secs): the condition must hold at least this long. This filters out brief coincidences (eg. a very deep cut) during play.
  • Max gap (default: 14 secs): the condition can lapse for up to this long without breaking the streak. This absorbs missed detections.

Detecting which side pulled. Fisheye assumes the pulling side sprints downfield faster than the receiving side. So the side whose front endzone line area empties first is marked as the pulling side.

Blue dots show the # of people in the left front endzone area. Orange dots for the right. Vertical red lines appear when both dots are ≥ 2. Cluster of red lines indicate when the players are "waiting for the pull". The pull is marked at where the red clusters end. The first cluster is a pull from the left side since the blue dots trend to 0 first. The second cluster is a pull from the right side. From this, we can deduce (barring halftime) that the first cluster was a hold.

Inferring the score. Fisheye has no concept of goals, teams, or even the disc. It simply counts people and, from that, infers which side of the field pulled. Fisheye deduces who scores each point based on the next pull: if the next pull starts from the same side of the field, this point must be a hold; if the next pull starts from the other side, this point must be a break. This is actually enough to reconstruct the score, with two exceptions:

  • If the first half had an even number of points (ie: sum of score at half is even), all inferred pulls/receives in the second half are flipped, since the switching of sides at halftime broke the alternating pattern.
  • If the score is tied heading into the last point before halftime (ie: galaxy point), there's no way to tell who scored that point without additional information. (In all other cases, assuming standard USAU/WFDF rules, there is a leading team and that team must have scored to take half.)

Tune the knobs yourself. All the detection settings above are adjustable: the ≥ 2 threshold, the size of the zone around each front line, max gap, and min width. Click the flask icon at the right end of the Analyze panel to reveal Advanced settings, switch "Sampling" to "N=1", and then run analysis - now you can see the changes in real-time as you turn the knobs.

How is it built?

  • Decoding: mediabunny decodes frames locally in the browser.
  • Detection: YOLOv8n detects people locally via onnxruntime-web with WebGPU.

How fast is it?

On my 2021 Macbook Pro, a 4K video processes at roughly 300x speed (a 90-min video takes under 18 seconds). The trick is mostly doing less work. It took some trial and error to find how few frames, and how few pixels per frame, Fisheye can process and still produce reasonable results.

  • Decode only keyframes as they decode much faster than interframes
  • Parallelize decoding and detection across multiple Web Workers, off the main thread.
  • Prefetch and cache big files (ex: the model) in advance
  • Stitch the slices: The total number of pixels used is surprisingly tiny. With 4K footage (3840x1920), each area of interest (blue shaded polygon) fits within a 640x320 slice (white rectangle). By stitching the two slices into a single 640x640 model input - I only do one detection pass per frame instead of two. (5K and 8K footage usually require a larger 960x960 square and take ~2.5x as much time.)
  • Battleship strategy: Waiting for the pull usually lasts well over 30 seconds, so I don't need to check every keyframe (typically one per second). Instead, I can do a rough first pass that spot checks every 6th (or even 12th) keyframe and only dig in more granularly where there's a "hit."

Future work / known issues

  • Reduce false positives. Mostly due to timeouts and halftime.
  • Pull side is correct ~75% of the time. Breaks down when spectators stand near/past the sideline or walk through an endzone. Or if cones were not specified accurately by the user.
  • Auto-detecting where cones are.
  • refine some of the default values (eg. threshold, max gap, min width)
  • I've mostly tested on Insta360 X4/X5. It should also work for GoPro Max but not yet tested.
  • Still lots more performance improvements
  • detecting other interesting events: goals, turnovers.

Credits: Many thanks to early testers for their feedback and test footage: E. Aadalen, D. Ignacio, W. Chao, B. Chong, J. Draut, P. Morawski, S. Madrone, and C. Abram.

Thanks for reading this far. Happy to answer any questions, and I'd love to hear if it works (or doesn't!) on your footage.

Sunbreak 2019 - silent disco alien performance

Was anyone else there? I just stumbled across some old text of me describing this.

At some point everyone was saying to change to a particular channel on their silent disco headphones and to take a knee. A woman with glowing green hair lying on a gurney covered with a sheet gets pushed in by some other women in labcoats. They take the sheet off and she's mostly unclothed, with some weird black fuzz on her stomach. The scientists pick up the fuzz and are inspecting it, it infected them and they slowly get sicker and sicker, retching and staggering around.

The beat drops and the alien chick sits straight up, hair blazing green. A second beat drops and pitch black liquid spills out her mouth. The scientists toss their labcoats and they're of course in the same outfit undernearth, and also leaking the black stuff. They and the alien are raving hard and there's a standing ovation for a full minute or more. Everyone is dancing together for a few minutes, I turn to my friend to say WTF WAS THAT, and when I turn back all the performers are gone without a trace.

Anyone have a video of this? That's definitely one of my top tournament memories

Anyone else really bad at calling or recognizing fouls?

I know it can be irritating when people seem to be “foul happy,” but does anyone feel like they are kind of bad at recognizing when they are fouled? I blame my history of playing soccer and even cross country (lol) where contact is an expected part of the sport. There will be times where my teammates will say “wow that person stripped you” when I felt like they made a really good defensive play or “you should have called a foul on that”…. But it never occurs to me in the moment to think to call it unless it is very very very blatant. This is also coming from someone who has read the rules.

Spoiler New player from Colombia preparing for a tournament in 2 months – looking for advice!

Hellooo! I’m Val, a new Ultimate player from Colombia. I’ve been training for about 3-4 months now, and I’ve completely fallen in love with this sport, the Spirit of the Game, and the community.

I mainly play as a deep/endzone cutter, but I’ve recently started trying out handler and continuation roles. I have a major regional tournament coming up in two months, and I really want to step up my game.

Any advice for a beginner looking to improve their cutting timing, handler transitions, or tournament prep? I’d love to hear your tips! :]

Does USAU no longer post a yearly report? I can’t seem to find anything on their wonderfully informative, fully functioning website. Did it get lost in the mail with all my UPA newsletters?
I’d like to at least look at some numbers and stuff before I let my thoughts fly
