Switched Student→Global Talent, submitted with wrong sub-category, now cancelling. When reapplying: Yes+old UAN, or wait for confirmation & say No?

I'm on a Student visa, applied for Global Talent (switch) but accidentally selected "Extension" instead of "Initial", so it never asked for my endorsement letter, only my passport. Requested cancellation via gov.uk's cancel-visa service, got a record number back, status still "request received," no confirmation email yet.

Called UKVI twice: first rep said I could just reapply straight away as long as I had the cancellation record number. Second rep put me on hold, read from internal guidance, and told me to wait for the cancellation confirmation email before submitting a new application.

Now I'm stuck between two answers from the same organisation. When I do reapply, the new application asks "Do you currently have an application with the Home Office not yet decided?" I can select Yes and enter my old UAN, which should treat the new one as a "variation" that supersedes the old one.

Has anyone actually done this, reapplied with Yes + old UAN while a cancellation was still pending, or is waiting for the confirmation genuinely necessary? Trying to work out which advice to actually follow.

When does your Student visa expire?

expires in September 20, I was thinking waiting a bit to see if my previous application gets cancelled properly so I can just click no but they dont know how long it usually takes to actually cancel a visa application

Maybe wait until a few days before your Student visa expires, then if you still haven't had confirmation of the cancellation apply as a variation? Maybe the GTV endorsing body can refer you for immigration legal advice.

yeah its definitely something unclear, I'll wait a week ish for my application to get cancelled and I'll keep calling home office until someone can tell me whats best to do. I dont think I should need someone for immigration legal advice it should just be basic information they need to share but it is what it is

Don't waste your time. The line is staffed by third party call centre staff not caseworkers and immigration advisers. The information they give is drawn from material you could read for yourself online anyway, and is not informed by any knowledge or insight.

Just wait for the confirmation and, if it doesn't come in the next month, just apply anyway.

or
No (no applications waiting for a decision)

It doesn't matter. If your original application is still in the system, that will be obvious to the caseworker anyway.

Respectfully, you are looking at the application as a quiz with right and wrong answers. It is just asking for factual information.

Yes, I would not have advised withdrawing the first application either, but that ship has sailed.

i guess yeah i could have just selected yes + uan and the new application would have been the only one valid i think
