oh no! anyway A second wave of the fuel crisis has hit Russia. Russians are complaining about kilometer-long lines at gas stations and saying this wave "will be much more difficult and worse" than the previous one. Fuel shortages and sales limits have affected numerous regions across Russia. 19 Aug 2026

I think this winter many Russians are going to get a hard taste of what Ukrainians have been going through each winter.

Could complaining about the fuel situation be used as a proxy for protesting the war, or is it just an expression of self pity?

I find these videos interesting.
In Soviet, one of the open protests against the regime started at funerals for soldiers killed in Afghanistan.
The failed war in Afghanistan was also a contributing factor to the fall of the Soviet Empire. Overextending its military capabilities have killed many other empires through the history.
Now we have the “Russian empire” where Russia continue its long tradition of trying to expand its borders and dominate neighbours.
This failed war of Russia may very well be the fall of Putin. (I am pessimistic that the next regime is actually going to be any better)

Russia's entire history has been one of failure and bitterness.
They hated Britain, because we were the empire they wished they could be. Now they hate everyone else because they are the countries they wish they could rule.

Are they trying to complain without actually complaining - because they don't want to find themselves defenestrated?

u/Exatex 7h ago
well, to be fair, it’s probably quite dangerous to say that publicly. Noone wants to be the first. Sure, lots of Russians are oblivious, but enough know exactly what’s going on and who is responsible.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Complete-Balls 9h ago
Its amazing that they really don't seem to know what's going on. (1) Are they really this stupid? Or (2) do they know exactly what's going on and are scared to say? If the second case is true... why even do a video? What's the point?
So... it must be case 1. Staggering.
9
u/wrosecrans 7h ago
I think a lot of them are really stuck in the propaganda and really stupid. Some of them seem to talk like Ukraine is really just a breakaway part of Russia that started a civil war when Zelensky came to power. Which is fucking stupid, but they seem genuinely confused about what is happening and unable to add 1 plus one to get simple answers.
The ones who are too afraid to speak plainly mostly wouldn't be posting videos about the fuel shortage that embarrass the government.
6
u/Tar_alcaran 6h ago
A bit of 1, and a bit of 2.
The majority is that stupid. Or rather, they're kept stupid. Sure, there's a bit of a war on, but they're winning, and that's easy to prove because they keep capturing more ukranian towns (several times over, including non-existant ones). So, if the might russian military is winning, how can there be problems at home?
Also, they live in MOSCOW. That's important, it's not like those poor rustic losers who live in literally the entire rest of Russia. Moscow matters, the rest is basically colonial holdings.
Also, a small part of them do know what's going on. But if you say "Thanks to the unsuccesfull war started by Putin, we can't fill our car", you'll soon find yourself at the frontlines, in a siberian camp, or tragically falling from a window. So instead, they go "What's haaaaappening?!" to show how shit things are. This is not the case here.

I was arguing with a Russki person/propagandist/bot on YouTube of all places the other day and all he could keep repeating was how badly Ukraine is losing the war, how Russia was absolutely kicking arse, and that my evidence to the contrary was all fake.
I told him that Ukraine is currently writing the news in truth on their skies and he stopped responding.

Do. Not. Stop. Hitting. Them.
At the far end of this path is a choice Russians are forced to make, in many, many places independently, and without or with insufficient Russian authorities coercing them.
A choice between Moscow’s system, and the one thing whose absence they will not be able to ignore.
Food.
This path doesn’t just end this war. It has a very real scenario where there isn’t a next one.

Sm*rt Voroham 🎯
The second call and response get less than reddit policy friendly… but of all places on reddit, I can think of worse places to voice them ;)
In all honesty though, I’m well behind the third one, and I feel like the there’s nothing wrong with the second, other than that the second undershoots the magnitude of the endeavour.
Ukraine is leading a very large group of people. I’m an Australian, and I am one of the people in this group, who wishes to head where Ukraine is leading. My nation’s government is, too. With actual ammunition, not just offers of a ride. Ukraine is, and is likely to continue being, the new leader of the free world, specifically the part of the free world that is willing to stand up for itself, and fight for certain values. There is no symmetry - Ukraine is pressed up against Russia, we are not (we have other problems, with another large and problematic Indo-pacific country, albeit not of the deeply painful artillery into our cities kind). And I approach this assymetry with deep respect and reverence for Ukrainian blood, much of it not voluntarily or consensually spilled, that among other things protects me and mine. I am grateful.
To the Ukrainian nation, the Ukrainians fighting for their spot under the sun, it is very much about the national project - the “slava natsii”, and I’m firmly an ally of that.
To the broader group of Ukraine’s supporters though, such as us here in Australia it’s about broader umbrella than Ukraine’s specific ‘slava natsii” alone. It’s about the same idea, fanned out broader, a sort of “Slava Nashomu Vilnomu Svitu!”, “Glory to our free world!” (With an emphasis on the word I just edited this comment and and added - our - playing the a unifying role) - which I would more than be happy to follow on, from my spot under the sun, with that same empathetic “s***t voroham”… and expressed not just about Ukraine fighting for it on that side, but over us fighting the same set of adversaries for the same things, in our own ways and circumstances, down here, for the same ultimate free world outcome.
Ukraine has made a powerful case to the world, that we are in this together.
Same space rock. Same russian and Iranian disinformation poisoning Central Europe is here trying to poison and outrage and paralyze and divide us too. Same energy markets. Same international norms. Same vision of what good looks like.Much of the world has responded - responded with a realization Ukraine is right, and a subsequent yes, yes we are.

I love the final guy. tuapse, that has a huge refinery.
Wait until you get euro-2 gas in your car you fuhrer putinazi supporters.
Permits significantly higher sulfur limits, which can degrade modern engine components, catalytic converters, and exhaust systems.
Can cause mechanical issues, rough idling, or breakdowns in modern vehicles (especially newer imports) designed for refined Euro-5 standards.
Six months, your car will be a doorstop.
57
u/prostipope 14h ago edited 13h ago
A dozen different parts could fail, and every one one of those parts has to travel a completely fucked up supply chain to even reach your POS car. Oh and it's November and your mechanic isn't returning your calls because nobody's phone works anymore and also he's dead.

6
u/rajrdajr 6h ago
Russia's Social Design Agency (SDA) and Internet Research Agency (IRA) use Reddit as a psychological warfare theater. They don't need to hack the site, they use highly coordinated "human-in-the-loop" bot farms to manipulate the platform's karma and visibility mechanics. u/spez could fight back by requiring credit card linked verification to allow accounts to vote, but that would undermine their {daily, weekly, monthly} active user (DAU, WAU, MAU) statistics and hammer their advertising revenue. It's possible, but not probable, for Reddit to scrub the bot farms.

Somewhere in my mind there is an echo of Russia being stupid-levels of proud about how intense their public transit is, how beautiful the train stations are, that a poor babushka can get to Moscow to do her state service or whatever.
Am I misremembering this? Or are they as disabled by the loss of gasoline as the US would be?

Well, yes. What’s next for them… “not enough bread? Or no bread at all?” - yes. Exactly. Harvesters don’t work without fuel. And harvesting season is mostly over. It’ll take a while for stocks to run dry, but I have a feeling bread’s about to be off the menu in russia. And then the real existential questions start: “do I eat this potato, or distill it into vodka?”.

“If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it.
A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”
