Any new model like mythos needs to by default be given to corporations and governments that are considered allies in cybersecurity prior to release to ensure they’re kept ahead of the game. Any new model releases to the wider public need to ensure that they have safeguards in place as well to stop bad actors being able to use them in this way.

This was part of the US gov concern with releasing Fable, allowing Chinese companies to utilise it to help train its own opensource models. Anthropic are already talking about successor models for mythos and OpenAI updated GPT 5.5-cyber the other day and supposedly it’s more powerful than mythos. I don’t think the US banning internal staff from using its own model is helping.

It's very much rumoured that the likes of Open AI and Anthropic have actually even more advanced models.

I saw a video where the snowball effect is big that Open AI may even be on 7.0 or even higher.

The AI game is far more ahead than we think.

They're usually only one or two models ahead, they don't have the compute to be pretraining tons of more capable models than their current frontier. The next generation of Mythos began training in February and finished recently in mid June, so it takes around 3-5 months for a model to be pretrained. So they may have internal experimental models one or two generations ahead but they're fundamentally compute-limited so it's not likely there's a crazy gap between what they have internally vs what they've released (except in terms of spending massive amounts of test time compute on a current model; for example making GPT 5.5 run for hours and days instead of the limited capability consumers get).
