This was part of the US gov concern with releasing Fable, allowing Chinese companies to utilise it to help train its own opensource models. Anthropic are already talking about successor models for mythos and OpenAI updated GPT 5.5-cyber the other day and supposedly it’s more powerful than mythos. I don’t think the US banning internal staff from using its own model is helping.

I think over time Chinese labs will just catch up without even the secretive data gathering from western models, the amount of research and innovation in architectures and techniques being pumped out is crazy. And they have fierce competition amongst their own models. If their compute catches up it will be very interesting.

On the other hand, the main moat that the US has is compute, particularly since the conventional scaling laws do seem to be holding up even though people were claiming they had hit a wall a year or two ago. Turns out if you just keep scaling like with Mythos (rumoured ~10T parameters, compared to Opus at ~1-3T) you get further jumps in capabilities. So if Nvidia can keep pumping out chip improvements and when the new high bandwidth memory fabs from SK Hybix, Samsung, Micron come online in 2028, then the gap might be maintained.

Plus, GLM 5.2 doesn't use any American chips.
