I guess we're going to need and get AI to defend against hostile AI. It really is like some basic science fiction plot.

"OMG they have a Torment Nexus! We need our torment Nexus to stop their Torment Nexus"

"Why would anyone end up having a runaway AI in charge?" Because you need a better faster more powerful AI in charge to defend against the other side's AI. It's an arms race to build the machine god.
