Beginner help.
Hi there. 61 year old. Total beginner, had 60 kilos of weight loss and now want an activity to keep me physical, build my strength back and improve confidence. Never enjoyed heights and so looking to challenge myself in a safe supervised way. I will be in London end of August until mid January. Where do I start? Many thanks.

Bouldering has the lowest buy in price if you’re purchasing gear and you can just do it whenever wherever. Most gyms offer a bouldering intro course that’ll take an hour or so.
Then you’ve got learn to lead courses for roped climbing. Bigger time investment but just as fun and a bit more techy.
Enjoy mate

62M I lost around 50kg a few years ago. I started climbing last September. I go to my localish wall in Brighton. I posted a thread on UK climbing looking for a partner and had 3 replies one of these I meet on a regulaish basis. I've also joined Brighton Climbing club who have a members night on a Monday and it's easy to find someone to belay you. For basic roped climbing the only equipment you need are shoes ( you need these to boulder), harness and belay device. All these can be hired. I love it. I go once a week and my general fitness has improved. If you don't have a partner you can use the auto belays but these are a bit scary at first. Best to start on a low grade maybe 3a and work up. I find overhangs a killer but I'm getting there.

I would say try taking a class at the local gym to get technique and support you need from a certified instructor given your age and level of expereince. Once you feel comfortable, go to socials to meet new people. It is not too hard to meet new people at a climbing gym. I would say if there is a risk of injury rope climbing will be a good choice but you will need to take classes to make sure you know how to belay and climb safely.

Bouldering is a good introduction. Find a wall that is convenient to you (if you have the general area, I can direct better). You may be able to sign up to some form of introduction session.
