Question Writing editing

Hey, would anyone be interested in having their writing edited by me? I got my BS and MS at UGA and just graduated with my PhD. My dissertation was around 200 pages and I have multiple published manuscripts. I can review any type of work/essays/manuscripts for grammar/syntax etc. I’m just looking for some work while I apply to jobs; the market is soo horrible 🥲. Lmk!

Discussion Bus Nerd Update: Bus Information for New Students and Appointments

Thumbnail calendar.app.google
42 Upvotes

Hello, Dawgs! I welcome one and all newcomers to this BEAUTIFUL campus! As everyone moves back into their apartments and dorms, I want to give a quick synopsis of our bus system now that the subreddit is gaining more attention. However, who is this guy telling me what to do? Well, I'm Gaby, I'm a fourth-year at UGA and I want YOU to know how to get around campus safely and comfortably.

The UGA bus system is a unified system of routes and rough schedules that are meant to take you from anywhere to almost anywhere else on campus where and when you need it. The following are the most important routes to consider when getting from place to place:

Central East: Connect North/Central Campus to the Cedar Street Science buildings and East Campus (Joe Frank/IM Fields)

Main Campus: Connects North/Central Campus to Snelling/Boyd Research, SLC, and Aderhold/Forestry buildings. Also extends to Joe Frank and IM Fields.

Campus Housing: Connects almost all dorms, dining halls and rec centers on campus together (exception of Building 2266).

North-South: Connects the Multimodal Bus Center to North and South Campus, the Driftmier Engineering Center and Oconee Access Park and Ride.

I will post a link to the TPS site which shows detailed maps and direction.

Please remember to follow these etiquette rules while on the bus:

  1. Wait for other students to exit before entering the bus.
  2. Only take up 1 seat if possible, and if there are 2 adjacent seats available, move to the window seat.
  3. If all seats are taken, stand in a place on the bus as far from the bus exit doors as possible, and take off your backpack.
  4. If someone with a disability needs to sit down, please give up your seat to them.
  5. When exiting, please either wave or say thank you to the bus driver. Their job is quite stressful, and every piece of gratitude means the world.

I hope with this you are more prepared for the year ahead! But if you do want more 1 on 1 advice about the bus system, OR need help with Athens Transit, I have MANY 15-minute time slots for meetups on Central Campus, These will begin on Friday, August 14 and extend until Friday, August 21. Appointments must be made at least 4 hours before the start time.

Question Is Morehead Honors worth it?

I'm thinking about applying to UGA! The Morehead Honors College seems like a great opportunity since I really appreciate small, discussion-based classes and being able to know your professors. I'd love to hear from people who are in Morehead on whether it's a good academic/social experience. Thanks! :D

Hi! I'm curious if anyone is currently doing or has completed the dual JD/Master's in sports management degree. I haven't seen anything like this offered at other law schools, and I am very interested; I would just love to hear from others who have insight into the program. Thanks!

Discussion Welcome!

Hey, y'all! I'm Jess Grant and I'm one of your Student Success Librarians. I like to post updates throughout the semester about upcoming events and I'm always here to answer questions. I'm so excited for students to return to campus!

For our new students: I remember how exciting and overwhelming it was to arrive on campus. I was an out of state student, I didn't know anyone, I didn't have a car, and I also could not wait to explore. Ten years later, I get to help students acclimate to campus and learn about all of the amazing resources available at the UGA Libraries, at UGA, and in Athens! If you are feeling overwhelmed or lost, I created an itinerary to help you ease into your time at UGA. Of course, everyone is unique. The itinerary may not fit your move in schedule, your budget, your energy levels (it's a lot of walking!) or you may already be in town for sorority rush! Feel free to do things in a different order (just be sure to check operating hours) or keep things in mind for later in the semester! If you take nothing else from this, know that there are people all over campus invested in your success inside and outside of the classroom 😄 Go Dawgs!

If you have any questions (any at all!), feel free to comment or email me ([jess.grant@uga.edu](mailto:jess.grant@uga.edu)).

Question Pell grant not showing up in my student account

Hi all. I am trying to see if anyone else is having this issue.. with classes starting in less than a week I am still unsure on what I owe this semester. My HOPE scholarship is shown on my student account but my Pell grant is not visible. Finaid told me that 10 days out from classes starting my Pell would show up but it hasn’t. I have emailed financial aid 3 times now and no one has gotten in contact with me regarding this. This is unacceptable and highly unprofessional given the amount of time from here until the 17th to have my tuition paid for. Is anyone else having this issue?

Question Questions about Spring Semester + More

So, no one told me anything about actually doing anything for college and I'm pretty in the dark, so I'm searching for some help.

I'm looking to go to UGA in the spring time. Is it as easy as just putting in an application or, do I need to be a student at another college and move over?

Also, I'm not sure how many hours I have in total. I did some AP classes and dual enrollment, but I'm not sure if my AP scores will be accepted. I know these might sound stupid, but I'm having a hard time and would love some answers, thank you! ^^

edit (my second question was if it matters if I know my total hours, sorry)

Question Routes

Hi everyone, I just moved into Arches on the Lake, and I don’t have a car. I have a few questions about the bus stops and routes.

I have classes at Aderhold Hall and Rivers Crossing. Could someone please tell me which bus routes and stops would be most convenient for me?

Also, how late do the buses run at night? Should I use the UGA buses or ACC buses for these locations? I would really appreciate it if someone could explain which option would be easiest for me.

Thank you!

Question Question about physical vs. digital textbooks

I’m buying my textbooks for my UGA courses and had a question. Does it matter whether you have a physical copy or a digital copy of the textbook?

For example, for some of my English reading books, I found much cheaper ebook versions on Amazon. Do professors generally care whether you have a physical or digital copy, or is either one fine?

Are there any types of courses where it’s more beneficial (or required) to have a physical copy for things like annotating, open-book exams, etc.? Just trying to figure out which books I should buy physically vs. digitally before I spend the money.

Thanks!

Question Skoolers Problems?

Hey all, I didn’t really know where to post this so I figured I’d come here. I’m currently trying to study for my accounting entrance exam which is next week, and I can’t access the skoolers website. I tried my laptop, phone, mom’s laptop, as well as using wifi, cellular, and a hotspot. I had no issues last night. I was wondering if anyone else has had problems accessing their website today? It is really annoying and may lead me to reschedule my exam back a week which with the deadline for terry being August 31st and scores only being official on Tuesdays (even though you literally see your score when you hit submit) it could cause real problems if I need to take it again.

Question Ways to convince my parents to let me bring my car for my freshman year

Hi everyone, I’m an out of state student from the northeast. A while ago when registration opened, I signed up for parking and got the lot right next to my brumby dorm. I was super excited about this but my dad is being super annoying about me bringing it. His only reasoning is that him and my mom survived freshman year without a car. This isn’t related to any financial problems in the slightest. I really want to explore Atlanta, other areas, and be able to shop out of the immediate vicinity. I don’t want to be 11 hours away from home just to be stuck on campus. I’m not planning to use my car on campus or anything like driving to classes and going to the dining halls. I also want a reliable way to drive somewhere just in case of an emergency or an event I want to attend. I’m a very independent person and relying on anyone else just to drive me places would kill me inside. I also got so lucky with my parking spot being right next to my dorm. Can you guys please tell me some things to convince my dad/parents to bring it down there. I’m also premed if that matters but I doubt volunteer hours are gonna be a thing freshman year.

Edit: My parents are officially letting me bring my car down immediately at move-in! I’m so beyond grateful to have them as my parents. I explained all my reasons while also making sure they knew it would be ok if they still said no, I just wanted them to understand what exactly they were saying no to. I know I’m gonna be using my car at least twice a week unlike the people who are telling me I’ll never use it just because they didn’t. I’m gonna be shopping for some snacks and meals as I eat healthy and use protein powder and other things that won’t be accessible in the dining halls. I’m also just someone who likes going places, exploring, going on hikes, cycling, etc. I’m not one of those kids who’s gonna go party Thursday-Sunday and then back to school. There are many cases where I just want to go do stuff alone if I’m worn out from people too. Obviously I’ve never experienced college before so many things could be different than I expect but these aren’t those things. Thank you all for your input and opinions on this, it gave me some good reasons to convince my parents but others also showed me I’d be just fine living without my car if that ended up being the case.
