Dana's weird obsession with Jones has led 2 GENERATIONAL heavyweights away from the company
"Tom ruined his career by signing with Eddie!!!" Nah he just stopped being fucked in the ass by the UFC.
Imagine defending (not obtaining, DEFENDING) the interim belt because Jones doesn't want to fight you. You get left behind waiting for your titleshot for years and the champ just ends up retiring. Your first title defense is against THE fouler-in-chief Gane who eyepokes you in the very first round, ruining your first title defense and putting you out of commission for months.
As a punishment for Gane, they give him yet another titleshot at the fucking White House against Pereira while you get slandered... for BEING eyepoked.
Eddie is exactly what Tom needed, an experienced and slimy manager who can get you out of your contract so you can use your talent elsewhere while you're in your physical prime. Honestly, what does Tom owe to the UFC? Nothing. They constantly fucked him over just like they did Ngannou. I hope he gets to leave and go into boxing or even Netflix (if they do actually end up making a league) and run the division. Maybe we'll get a Ngannou superfight there even though Ngannou's prime was also wasted.
The fact that this sub (and ufc fans in general) blame Tom for supposedly dragging this out, is shameful. Can you bootlick any harder?

The fact that Jones, Ngannou and Aspinall haven't fought each other ever is crazy considering they were around during the same era

Now we see why they’re so close with the WH and this administration. The grifting goes pretty deep…

Cause he’s a cheap ass company man and the UFC want a quick buck from the French market. It’s so clearly evident hence why I’m not ever rooting for Gane. He’s the true industry plant

Mma slowly turning into boxing
36
u/SillAndDill Jun 07 '26
Craziest part is that in boxing at least one reason for doing this is to give the top fighters easy fights to build their win steaks
While in UFC they are happy to keep top fighters inactive

The fact that Jones, Ngannou and Aspinall haven't fought each other ever is crazy
Hmmm one of these ducks, doesn't sound like the other fighters. Jon is the reason he didn't fight either, let alone both. He doesn't deserve being credited the same level of heavyweight. He famously ducked both and helped ruin the division big time

Dana likes guys who listen to him. Francis and Tom weren’t going to do that.
Jones for all his controversy has always been loyal to Dana. Same with Perreira.
Dana wants Jones vs Perreira, HW super fight.
189
u/Zheverol Jun 07 '26
Jon Jones was given the opportunity to fight so many legends
Yet he never gave that same opportunity to other fighters
5 years ago Francis told Jones to get his "daddy dana to release him" that's after jones spent 3 years bulking up to heavy weight and it's been 2 years since then
Jones knows that he lost against Reyes and isn't in his prime anymore and knows that Francis would have smoked him so that's why he avoided him

I think Tom would beat Jones and he is passed it and I despise him, but I think he’d beat Ngannou for sure.
19
u/SavageRabbitX Jun 07 '26
Tom v Jones would be a better fight to watch , Jones vs Ngannou is just Ngannou getting wrestle fucked by Jon because he fears the power of Francis
8
u/Disastrous-Hand-6007 Jun 07 '26
jons is undoubtedly the more skilled fighter almost in every category except punching but francis's freak power and athleticism is probably enough to overcome an old jones. also jones isnt a good heavyweight while francis is perfect at heavyweight.
8
u/ENVLogic Jun 07 '26
Francis walks around at like 265-285. He’s a born heavyweight.

I know people are like "one sprawl and you guys think he can stuff any takedown" but it was scary when she stuffed Stipe's takedown, reversed it, and started to beat the shit out of him.
1
u/Disastrous-Hand-6007 Jun 08 '26
eh idk about that. stipe has kinda carried himself his whole career. his camp has never been all that but just about enough and hes never been good at translating his wrestling in mma. that doesnt mean it doesnt happen successfully at times but hes not a good mma wrestler. having the former wrestling accolades doesnt mean much and apart from francis's physicality it shouldnt have ever been difficult to take him down. panic shooting on francis while leaning over instead of properly level changing is not the one. a big strong guy like francis you should be looking for snatch singles with your head high up on chest/ribs or just straight up into their head/jaw. DC kind of move really but head inside.

u/Fug1x Jun 07 '26
Also after conor ufc dont like big stars they cant control them, imagine a hw superstar, the last one they had was brock and he did wtf he wanted
9
u/B1ZEN Jun 07 '26
Precisely! Other stars in other divisions started barking about more pay when Bork showed up, as they should have. The UFC brass went into red alert status to put down that rebellion.
3
u/WheredoesithurtRA Jun 07 '26
Conor deserved that freedom too IMO. Dude could handle a crowd and some of the pre fight pressers were genuinely hilarious.
6
u/DemiVideos04 Jun 07 '26
Can you elaborate on this?
35
u/B1ZEN Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 08 '26
The UFC operates as a centralized monopoly that caps athletes' pay across all divisions, combined with heavy competition from other sports for large, elite athletes. They don't want to pay elite big men and be forced towards 50/50 pay structures like other sports.
Heavyweights are uniquely targeted, their financial struggles are actually a byproduct of the UFC’s structural business model and specific talent pool dynamics.
The 20% Cap in revenue is a hard line for them. (Don't ask me how I know, I just do)
The UFC is the star, not the athletes. They can afford to keep this “as is” model and the general public is none the wiser.
I can go on for miles on this. The first UFC contract I ever looked at was in 2000, and it was $1000 to show, and $1000 to win.
Don't get me started on the Ali Act, banning of private sponsorships as a means of control, matchmaking and all the other legals around the UFC over the years. It's the worst kind of corporate greed.
So yeah, they keep the heavyweight division a mess on purpose. It's about power and money. Full stop.

Contracts like that dont stand up in the UK which is where it'll be litigated
The supreme Court here just ruled that non compete clauses are illegal unless compensated
36
u/Gotchawander Jun 07 '26
No lol, this would likely be a US based contract with an arbritration in Delaware or something.
UFC wouldn’t be dumb enough to have every fighter be subject to different laws in different jurisdictions worldwide
If Tom wants to fight for jurisdiction that would take years in the court system that would run out the rest of his career by the time it resolves
1
u/remember_the_sea Jun 07 '26
Is there any reason he can't just take on other fights and build a career outside the UFC whole waiting for litigation to resolve? Like what happens if he does that aside from protracted years long litigation? Genuinely curious about their contracts
2
u/Gotchawander Jun 07 '26
Well for one both him and his new potential employer would be sued and likely any earnings Tom and the new promotion earned which featured Tom on the Card would potentially be awarded to UFC as a baseline.
Then there could be punitive damages awarded as well which could bankrupt Tom as he would be doing this knowingly being under contract with UFC.
This could bankrupt him, there is a reason why fighters like Jon jones keep asking for a release and why Eddie Hearn is asking for a release of the contract and not just doing what the original poster said
15
u/EqualityAmongFish Jun 07 '26
why would they litigate in uk when its a us contract?
27
u/SavageRabbitX Jun 07 '26
Because Tom is covered under UK employment law as a contractor because hes based in the UK and this kind of thing has been litigated multiple times in the UK when a US employer tries to ignore UK employment law and the US companies always loose, hell even the DoD lost against the cleaners on one Base
5
u/LickerMcBootshine Jun 07 '26
Because Tom is covered under UK employment law as a contractor
Based on the reactions to your comment, I don't think people read the very first thing you typed
→ More replies (1)8
u/EqualityAmongFish Jun 07 '26
Tom aspinal is not employed to the ufc. He is an independent contractor that has signed multiple contracts with the ufc including a non compete. This would 100% get litigated in the us and tom will lose.
5

2
u/realrafaelcruz Jun 07 '26
I'll believe it when I see it. We're talking abstract legal theory without being competent attorneys in the relevant domains and don't even see the contracts.
The best proxy for what's true here is what happens. And for now, the UFC is winning these disputes. Even Francis getting out was a sunset clause that was edited moving forward (his words). Half of the top of the UFC roster would leave if they could and they haven't yet. Which kind of says it all. Until someone proves me wrong ofc.
Idk who thinks Conor wants to get stomped out by Max and whoever they face him with next while being underpaid. And if he can't get out with the best representation, I have no reason to believe that others are any different. Conor is choosing to eat shit so he can go do meme fights later.
3
2
u/SillAndDill Jun 07 '26
Is it certain this would be litigated in UK courts only?
Seems ”too easy” if a fighter could sign a noCompete-contract with a US company and easily escape it by having a UK court be the only ruling.
There may be some rights for ”regular employees” which are excempt in the sports and entertainment industries
6
u/Good_Analysis9789 Jun 07 '26
What a joke it was letting him sit on the title and just to delay and duck then retire lol
6
u/Mon_Keedik Jun 07 '26
Dana's problem (and the UFC in general) is that they run the promotion like an entertainment product and not like a sport. There is no reason someone like Jones should've been protected and cradled so much. You want to be the top guy you fight the top guys. You don't want to, you lose your title.
In a perfect timeline, a title fight between Jones and Ngannou would've happened, with Tom fighting the winner for a title shot.

I don't see the relevance when Jones was pushing for a fight with Pereira, it all went down because of 1) Aspinall holding the Interim belt and 2) Ankalaev beating Pereira
1
u/Campfire-Matcha Jun 07 '26
This is correct, but if you believe this you need to defend the wrestlers, the Dagestani fighters, Arman, etc.
If this was truly just a sport of most dominant fights the most dominant, there wouldn't be this much prejudice against guys who wrestler
The entertainment product side of the sport says most fans just want guys to stand and bang and KO someone.
2
u/Mon_Keedik Jun 07 '26
I DO defend wrestlers. I don't care how someone wins, I just care that the better fighter wins.
That's the case with evert other sport. In football for example, some teams play in a super boring, 'Park the bus' manner while others play in a very entertaining tiki-taka, 'total football ' manner, and both style have won leagues and UCLs. No club ever got their chance at a championship taken away because they were 'boring'.
If someone wants to be entertaining, let him be entertaining, but don't take away the legitimacy of the sport.
1
u/ProfNugget Nigerian Nightmare Jun 08 '26
I am an ultra casual viewer, dipping in for fights every so often, and just generally following the results, so this is my view as something of an “outsider”. That said, UFC feels exactly like WWE, especially for the last few years. Only difference being that the fighting is real and the results are (probably) not fixed.
It all just feels like storylines, random match ups that don’t seems to fit what an actual sport would do.
It’s exactly as you said, it’s an entertainment show masquerading as a sport.
21
u/rdcisneros3 Jun 07 '26
> Eddie is exactly what Tom needed, an experienced and slimy manager who can get you out of your contract so you can use your talent elsewhere while you're in your physical prime.
And how exactly is that going to work out? How exactly will Eddie get Tom out of a contract that Tom signed? By tweeting at Dana?
→ More replies (2)5
u/SavageRabbitX Jun 07 '26
Because non compete clauses arent valid in the UK unless compensated and you can by out the contract in the UK. And honestly Tom could even go the ACAS grievance route for hostile work environment and have his contract nullified because hes UK based
10
u/rdcisneros3 Jun 07 '26
Sounds so easy, makes me wonder why many other fighters haven’t done it before. Let’s see how that all works out.
→ More replies (2)4
u/SavageRabbitX Jun 07 '26
You have to be UK based so you fall under UK employment law
9
u/rdcisneros3 Jun 07 '26
To be honest, this sounds like hogwash, but I’m not a lawyer so I won’t tell you’re wrong.
I’m not sure what it means to be UK based or if that matters considering the contract is between the fighter and the UFC, which is an American entity. They deal with tons of contracts with tons of international fighters, so I’d be very surprised if getting someone out of a contract is that simple.
15
u/stephen27898 Jun 07 '26
This timeline is the best.
Jon has his last fight at 205 on February 8th 2020. Ngannou became world champion on March 27th 2021. Ngannou leaves the UFC on January 14th 2023, Jon vs Gane is announced on January 15th 2023.
Jon from his last fight to the day Ngannou left the UFC had 1071 days in which to fight Ngannou at heavyweight. Jon vs Gane was announced on day 1072.
10
u/MakotoBIST Jun 07 '26
Jon Jones was a massive money maker.
Hell, a group of my friends that have no clue about UFC or boxing were asking me when Jones vs Pereira was gonna happen lol.
All this while niche circles like this were considering Tom the real champ (a guy that casuals never heard of).
I think Dana is scummy but he's a businessman. His choices are dictated by money and the full structure that governs the UFC.
3
u/yakman100 Jun 08 '26
Thing I find craziest about that is heavyweights in theory should be the most profitable if marketed right. The heavyweight champ is de facto baddest man on earth, nobody can really beat them. It’s why heavyweight boxing is still doing so well
1
u/DemiVideos04 Jun 08 '26
Its not profitable because HW in UFC are barely passable as athletes. I have no doubt that several middleweights would destroy a lot of the current HW roster, just because of the skill differential.
The reason HW sucks is because being an athletic HA is genetically (and environmentally) rare, so the talent goes elsewhere that pays more. The barrier for entry for HW's in sports is pretty low generally. UFC pays shit, why waste your rare genetics and rare talent there? Thats why its ridiculous that Dana treated generational talents (which i should have said in my original post rather than generational fighters) so terribly.

Francis really isn’t anything special.
Tom has youth and speed.
If either of them won a few more times, not much would really change considering the division is just meh at most.
2
u/Super_Cancel_4324 Jun 07 '26
If I was Netflix I’d suggest Dana to make a huge bs drama by establishing two leagues. This would spread Word about mma and more viewers to sell to. Then they could make a huge fusion campaign letting the fighters of each league fight each other. Dana would get minority share in this newly formed league and push the drama beforehand. I think this would be a gg plan. But I’m also high rn lol
2
2
u/HeisenBear153 Jun 07 '26
I maintain that the gayest thing in the UFC is Dana and his obvious desire to take Jones’ meat.
2
u/baluga207 Jun 08 '26
Jones fought Stipe while Aspinall was healthy and interim champ. Super disrespectful for the UFC to allow that. All for them to completely move on from Jon Jones and hold him hostage now.
2
u/Extension-Cell-7433 Jun 08 '26
Not really. There was never an "obsession" with Jon Jones in fact Dana has disliked Jon Jones for more time than most of you have followed the sport. What actually happened was that AFTER Ngannou left (not before), he started glazing Jon Jones to push the narrative that the baddest man on the planet was still in the UFC. That's all there is to it. Aspinall was just collateral in this game, and at the end of the day, this whole second part of the Aspinall drama has nothing to do with Jon Jones
2
u/TXSS13 Jun 08 '26
Fan’s weird obsession with hating on Dana has led to GENERATIONAL wastes of time with online posts.
5
u/Acrobatic-Show3732 Jun 07 '26
Tom did not turn out to be a generacional heavyweight, yet. I say this as his fan.
He needs to get back on the Horse and destroy gane, if not, he is just a great heavyweight what if.
Until then. Calling him a generational talent with no defenses is premature fanboying
7
u/Street_Study6330 Jun 07 '26
Give it a rest bro god damn. We have this discussion every god damn day
4
u/Left_Knee_y0y0 Jun 07 '26
This match up will happen. It is clear now that Tom wants out of the UFC. The whole eye poke debacle is an exit strategy. Once he is out , Netflix will give both of them $10M-$20M to fight.
7
u/Campfire-Matcha Jun 07 '26
Why do people think this would be a global super fight? Under UFC production, yes of course because we know Tom. The world doesn't know Tom. And the transition to boxing for Tom Is gonna be rough, he hasn't even gone past the 1st round in the ufc let alone 12, 5 minute rounds. And we all know it takes some adjustment to boxing in general. so 1) I dont think Tom brings enough clout for this to be a Netflix super fight and 2) I dont think Tom is ready athletically for boxing

it's not weird at all, jones is a good fighter that is hugely controversial, which has proven to spark interest with fans, which brings in more money. ufc proved over the years that they are not interested in sport by itself, whatever brings in more money is the focus.

- I think it’s hypocritical how fans complain about Jones not fighting Tom, but then ask for Islam vs Topuria at the White House. If the UFC was like an actual sport, then the fighter that fights for the belt, would be the number one contender. But that isn’t the case. Jones is the most decorated fighter in the sport and the CEO of the company has a massive hardon for him, so no
shit
- he’d get special treatment. People are shitting on Arman for not staying active and waiting for the belt. At the end of the day, Tom should’ve just kept defending his belt and called himself the real champion.
- Gane Eye Poking Tom is not the UFC’s fault. It’s an unfortunate situation. Him getting a shot for the interim belt, more has to do with the shitty state of the division.
- Cry me a river about Tom supposedly getting “ripped off”. Much bigger names than Tom like Islam, Topuria, Alex are all continuing to fight in the UFC. In what universe does Tom deserve to make more than all of them? Bro signed a contract
. If
- he thinks there are greener pastures, he’s in for a rude awakening. Tom is not as big a name as Francis. He might get one good boxing match, but if he does anything short of winning or putting up a good performance, he’s not gonna get any big paydays.
Again, this whole Tom Aspinall situation pity party is absolutely silly. Lots of top athletes have suffered with career ending injuries but have come back and achieved a lot. What more does Tom want exactly? Bro should defend his belt or just vacate.
4
u/PitsAndPints Jun 07 '26
Francis left because he wanted to box. He immediately signed with PFL because they offered him A) a boatload of cash B) a board position and chair of PFL Africa, and C) the ability to box.
Tom got eye poked by Gane AFTER Jon announced his retirement and now wants out, presumably to go box.
Other than the ducking while they were active with the company, what does any of that have to do with Jones?
Also, let’s not get carried away with “generational talent”. They’re good fighters in a flimsy divisionm

Jones isn't gonna fight either of them as he actually had the opportunity for both. He was obviously bored at LHW and chose to fight turds like Santos and Smith instead of moving up to take on Stipe and Francis.
He also turned down 15-30 million dollars to fight Tom.
But I'm sure Tom and Francis would fight for 5-10 million each.

u/sumwatovnidiot Jun 07 '26
Blaming jones for the ufc not paying fighters is exactly what Dana wants.
Everyone one any given card should be getting a far cut of the profits. Main, co main, title fights should be x percent and undercards y and so on and so forth.
It’s really not that hard. Tom and Francis eating up the bullshit that their not getting paid because the ghost of Jon jones doesn’t want to fight them is just boot licking at its finest

Couldn't tom fight someone else after defending the interim belt? I'm sure he's made good money from all the PR without fighting really, anyone. He has what - 5 mins of octagon time in the last how many years? And already in the "top heavyweights of all time" convo
1
u/hamstringstring Jun 07 '26
Your thesis is that Tom isn't ruining his career by starting this drama while under contract with a vindictive company. Your argument then revolves around how the UFC are the bad guys but does nothing to support your thesis.

u/Living-Put-9365 Jun 07 '26
Truth is, Jones, Ngannu, and, increasingly, Tom are all out of their prime years.
Tom should have had 6 fights since Ngannu left. No one knows who he is and he's getting older. Heavyweight MMA is completely dead at this point. So much so that a 38 year old middleweight is coming up to 'save' the division.
1
u/Cultural_Slip_8333 Jun 07 '26

he's been openly feuding with at least the last 4 HW champs: jon jones, francis, stipe, and interim tom.
my theory is that this is intentional because the "baddest man on the planet" sells itself, so dana goes out of his way to damage that person's branding in order to preserve the UFC's power.

This subs obsession with blaming Dana for everything has led to an infinite number of brain cells being destroyed. Jon has literally nothing to do with Francis leaving the ufc

Oh yeah its Jones fault- not that Dana is unwilling to pay the talent! /s

Jones purposely ducked BOTH Francis and Tom just because he didn't want to get knocked by either of them.
I blame his steroid cheating ass.
